xanderjanz··on Show HN: Generate a quiz from a Wikipedia page
Don't go to localhost:5000/, like you might think. Open file://.../WikiQuiz/index.html as a file in Chrome. It will make ajax requests to localhost:5000
xanderjanz··on Snowden: Stop Relying on Facebook for Your News
Seems like most commenters here didn't read the article. Snowden isn't suggesting you leave facebook because of free flow of fake news.

Quite the opposite, he's saying facebook controls the flow of news too much.

xanderjanz··on JavaScript async/await implemented in V8
From all my research, I feel like Promises end up making better code than async await. Am I the only one who thinks that?

Like, what's the equivalent of Promise.all with async/await? And how do tou do stuff synchronously after kicking off an async process?

xanderjanz··on Have Software Developers Given Up?
I'm enjoying it. There's a lot still to be to learned about DevOps and massive codebases.
xanderjanz··on Have Software Developers Given Up?
Given up? No. Prioritized development speed over bug prevention? Yes,
xanderjanz··on Ask HN: How do you write and maintain email templates?
Glad to hear. I'm building a similar system with Gulp and Mandrill. Thanks.
xanderjanz··on Post-Mortem for Google Compute Engine’s Global Outage on April 11
I imagine we'd treat it like we do getting hit by a drunk driver. Vilify reckless programmers, and don't think about it.
xanderjanz··on Instagram's Million Dollar Bug
most RCE bugs can be compounded into major data dumps. That doesn't make each individual RCE a million dollar bug.
xanderjanz··on 2015 AIIDE Starcraft AI Competition – Report and Results
Developer set parametres are pretty common in industry "machine learning", the kind of thing Google NEtflix and Amazon use. Academic models aim to reduce the amount of human input, but most real world applications have no such motivation. This kind of AI can be seen as a developer parenting a machine.
xanderjanz··on Khan Academy's React style guide
Their logic is that because elements are typically deeply nested, it's better to sacrifice the readability for the saved indentation. By the time you get 4 child elements deep, almost half your line space goes to tabs.
xanderjanz··on Twitter Expected to Begin Layoffs and Stop Headquarters Expansion
In a certain sense, twitter's one-to-many messaging is simpler, because it is a smaller volume of messages that have to be served.
xanderjanz··on Flux Challenge
Several of the requirements feel like the quirks of the authors implementation, rather than technological ideals. (Don't reuse previously fetched sith? Fetch each sith lord separately?)
xanderjanz··on Boredom is not a problem to be solved, it's the privilege of a free mind
To quote the Minutemen, Being bored is power!

xanderjanz··on The US digital service
Because those giant companies have an army of managers and accountants that will be sure to check every box and cross every t. A group of Valley engineers is thoroughly less thorough.

xanderjanz··on What's the Matter with San Francisco?
Hmm, it seems like you've forgotten Detroit's history. Why it became your go-to example for a failed city.
xanderjanz··on Keybase raises $10.8M
Doesn't this just set up a central failure point? Does Keybase have a forward secure key system?
xanderjanz··on Banks Forgot Who Was Supposed to Own Dell Shares
Group A bought Dell stock with the intention of legally seeking a higher appraisal. But Delaware corporate law has a strange feature of saying appraisal seekers must own their shares continuously after demanding appraisal. But in this case, Group A's bank had changed ownership of the stock with another bank "behind the scenes", which caused a Delaware judge to reluctantly rule Group A's appraisal rights void.
xanderjanz··on What Is Code?
You make a good, if harsh point.

But this:

"it wouldn't help the economic position of Apple, Google, FB, or Microsoft if everyone knew what code is and how it works. It strengthens the tech economy's stranglehold on society when code is treated as something inscrutable."

Is just cynical. Tech companies aren't so fragile as to depend on general ignorance among the human population. If more people understood code, these companies could create more code. I think you point to an underlying misconception that some how technology is just a barrier to entry, and doesn't provide intrinsic value. But I do not believe this to be true.

xanderjanz··on RedditStorage
you could structure it such that the longer they sit there remembering the data, the more they get paid. When they want to leave, they enter what they remember and get paid.
xanderjanz··on Wait, Google Sent Me
Sure it is. Depends on your definition of authentication. But it's totally a "supported feature of the internet".

This plugin isn't fundamentally different than spoofing a session cookie.

xanderjanz··on JSFuck – esoteric JavaScript
Useful for obfuscating executable JS for security reasons.
xanderjanz··on SpaceX Dragon CRS-6 Launch Webcast
This barge is in a turbulent ocean, so it's already doing a lot of work just to stay somewhat still. Plus the vision tracking on the rocket is already accounting for the movement of the barge.
xanderjanz··on Probabilistic programming does in 50 lines of code what used to take thousands
"to save their lives" is a little dramatic, considering they were in a closed tech interview. I'm sure if you gave them 20 seconds on the internet (you know, the resource they would have in a real life problem solving situation) they could find one.
xanderjanz··on Ask HN: What are you doing to improve your health?
I skateboard to and from work now. It's not a huge workout, but does get me to sweat twice a day.
xanderjanz··on Nuclide: An open-source IDE for React Native
From what I gathered of the talk, they mean unifying the build, debugging, and analytics tools. So no more need to have Terminal, Xcode, and Chrome Dev tools open
xanderjanz··on React Native is now open source
I asked the FB Engineers that were manning the Open Source booth at F8 today about this. They assured me that it wasn't a threat, or any change in ideology on their end as open source contributors. That they were also concerned with the community, and that their lawyers were looking into it currently. Not really an answer, but at least they awknowleged the criticisms.
xanderjanz··on Facebook's React Native website doesn't fit on my iPhone
It's fixed now :)
