xNeil··on Google vs. the Open Web
>Google will lose all respect from the community and will collapse sooner or later.

I love this little bubble all of HN (or at least a vocal majority) seems to live in. Google is most definitely not collapsing anytime soon, and their products are loved by millions, if not billions, of users all over the world.

>They are losing their monopoly

No, they most definitely aren't. Brave Browser runs on top of Google's Chromium. Firefox runs on top of Google's money. Their lead in search does not seem to be going away anytime soon - there is a reason literally everyone on earth uses Google as a search engine. There is a reason literally everyone on earth uses YouTube to watch any video they want. There is a reason 70% of all phone users use Google's operating system. There is a reason Gmail is by far and away the clear leader in the personal email space.

>They have announced that they will try to block navigation if you have an ad blocker installed (for example when watching a video on YouTube).

As they rightly can. You are under no obligation to use YouTube - and if you do use it, you must pay for it, either by watching ads, or by paying for YouTube Premium.

HN can keep complaining about Google all they want, but Google is one of the few companies that has truly made the Internet the Internet. Their impact on humanity has a whole has so far most definitely been net positive, and you are under no obligation whatsoever to use their products. There is a reason they are the clear leader in the products they offer, and that is because they offer, say, a free tier (as in Gmail), or openness (as in Android).

If they bring cases and lose them corporations will continue doing whatever they want since there will be no consequences. It's important for the FTC to know what fights are worth fighting, and they will be taken seriously.
xNeil··on A world where people pay for software
That's not backward compatibility then - those are the systems it was made for (Windows 7 would then have been made backwards compatible for Office 2003).

It's backward compatibility if Word 2003 runs on the later Windows versions - like Windows 10 and 11. I don't know the answer to that, but I'm sure someone here does.

xNeil··on FTC readies lawsuit that could break up Amazon
What's the point of that? That solves none of the concerns raised by the FTC (pressuring sellers, setting prices, etc.). They'll have to break up Amazon eCommerce, not AWS.
xNeil··on Exxon bets carbon will be the new oil
To be honest, I think "poop will be my new food source" makes perfect sense. But that might just be me.
xNeil··on Negative sentiment against u/spez during r/place
It genuinely amazes me as to how some people (Musk, Spez, etc.) are able to take so much hate. I'm not talking about whether they brought it on themselves, or whether it was deserved or not - I'm just astounded at how they manage to face all the hate they receive.

On a darker note, I've read of people committing suicide when they were doxxed. The hate these guys (Elon, Spez, etc.) receive is orders of magnitude more than what causes other people to break.

Genuine question - is this the US's version of UPI (United Payments Interface) in India?
xNeil··on India’s sex workers turn to WhatsApp, Instagram to find clients safely
I believe parent is talking about a focus on Voice UIs like Voice Notes and Messages. Not transcribing the voice into text, but the voice itself.
xNeil··on Polar v1.0: Let’s Fix Open Source Funding
Sounds awesome! Love your idea, but I was wondering as to what would happen if GitHub built this into their platform directly, bypassing Polar. What does Polar have that GitHub doesn't, in case that happens?
xNeil··on New study reveals most classic video games are unavailable
Yes. In fact, Shkreli promised to release the full album if Trump won 2016. I think he ended up releasing two tracks.
xNeil··on After Vietnam, the Philippines could be next to ban 'Barbie.' Here's why
Sounds absolutely awesome haha. Mind if I ask what your job was at the time? What were your interactions with the gun boats like? What exactly were you surveying in the Spratly Islands? Did you ever run into pirates?
xNeil··on DigitalOcean acquires Paperspace (YC W15) for $111M in cash
Hi Dillon - congrats on the offer! I adore your product. Quick question though - how sure are you DO won't be interfering with the product and the current team will continue doing its job? Alternatively, would you like DO to take a dominant role in running the product?
xNeil··on Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here?
Thanks you for the link! Is it cool if I email you with further questions?
xNeil··on Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here?
Hi there! I adore your blog. Quick question - you have an MBA from Stanford, and you're a software engineer rather than a 'manager'. Are there others like you? I was thinking of an MBA as an option, but was afraid my focus after that might not be technical enough.
xNeil··on All Twitter content seems to be behind a login wall today
What in the world gives you the impression Twitter is in its final days? Naysayers have been saying Twitter fill fail any day now for about 8 or 9 months now.
xNeil··on Fast machines, slow machines
I mean, I don't think that's exactly a fair comparison. These companies are focused a lot (and I mean a lot) more on enterprise software than your regular desktop software. I'm talking about Banking Systems, Automation Platforms, Government Software, stuff that has no use outside the corporate world. And they do genuinely do good work in these areas. Sure, they're not pioneers or doing some groundbreaking research, but they do their job and they do their job well (of course there are exceptions - but these aren't 100 billion dollar companies for nothing).
xNeil··on We raised a bunch of money
You're right - I also think (personal opinion) the trust gained in a company by reading their blog post is greater than the trust gained by seeing an ad. Because I saw this blogpost, I trust fly.io more than I would have had I seen a YouTube ad of them or something of the sorts.
xNeil··on We raised a bunch of money
Genuine question - what does being a hacker have to do with being an author?
xNeil··on We raised a bunch of money
Yeah this is pretty funny - if you speak to PR before posting something, it's 'PR-riddled bull** written by some executive', or 'corporate talk'. If you don't speak to PR before posting something, it's 'Did you speak to PR before posting this?' There's no winning.
xNeil··on We raised a bunch of money
Yeah no I have to agree with you on this one. Every company is going to raise prices at one point or another - it might be inflation, it might be profit-chasing, padding for an IPO - whatever.

Just because a startup might raise prices in the future shouldn't stop you from using their products - with a caveat, that is, how easy it is to shift to another operator. I haven't used fly.io personally, so I don't know about that - could you elaborate on shifting to another provider just in case?

xNeil··on Men who helped run Megaupload sentenced to prison in New Zealand
I'd assume not - the rich anyways hardly get large salaries (I'm sure they do, but the majority of the money they make is probably borrowing on equity).

xNeil··on Tell HN: "I don't care about cookies” extension bought by Avast, users jump ship
That's a good way to think about it. Way I saw it was - if you are foolish enough to give up liberty for safety, you don't deserve the safety anyways.
xNeil··on Apple Vision Pro Is Apple's New VR Headset
I'm thinking this would have been an incredible idea during the pandemic - don't get me wrong, it's still a great idea. I just think the pandemic use case simply made too much sense - they really could have changed remote work and quaranting forever.

xNeil··on Internet disrupted in Pakistan amid arrest of former PM Imran Khan
In my above comment, in order to acertain the data and compare India's statistics to those of the US, I tried googling it, but could not seem to find any reliable answers. As an alternative, I decided to use ChatGPT.

Unfortunately, I did not do my due diligence and visit each link - the links seemed to be authentic, and I went along with it. ChatGPT gave me the number 41 and the links that I have mentioned above.

Now that you have pointed it out, I tried visiting those links and the pages seem to not exist. I also put them in the Wayback Machine, which says it hasn't archived them.

That's why you'll notice the statistics are for 2019 - the pandemic is not yet part of the equation and I expected ChatGPT to have information for 2019.

I fear ChatGPT may have 'hallucinated' the data and the links. I can't seem to find a reliable source for the 41 lynchings. As such, my comment above stands moot, and I hope it is ignored - I can't seem to find the delete option.

I do sincerely apologize. It was not my intention to spread misinformation. I didn't do my due diligence, and now know better.

I see what you're getting to - while you're not wrong, you're not right either.

They're not carrying hitjobs on rivals or opponents - they're eliminating gang leaders and major criminals. The judiciary is either afraid of giving these gangsters actual sentences, or have been bribed by the gangsters. To solve this, the police has effectively taken the execution of justice into their own hand.

I know it may sound absurd, and the idea of the police taking matters into their own hands would normally scare me, but Uttar Pradesh seems to be an exception. The rule of law has broken down so completely it needs the law to be broken to be brought back, if that makes any sense to you.

The gangsters that were killed were a bit like the mafia in that sense - everyone knew they were crooks, and everyone knew what they did. It seems the tipping point for the ruling party to execute (or 'encounter', as it is called in India) these gangsters is when they kill policemen. Since the judiciary will not punish them, it becomes necessary for the police to inculcate a fear of the police in gangsters' minds in order for their policing activities to actually be effective.
