Looks like the pretty formatting is poplular. All the people that complain of Python layout should be jealous of this one: https://www.ioccc.org/2020/yang/prog.c
x87678r··on Asahi Linux: Linux on Apple Silicon project
What have they got to lose?

30% cut of app store, icloud, apple+ TV, Safari users, Maps users, Incremental Market Share.

Realistically lots of people could end up preferring Linux over MacOS, why risk it?

x87678r··on Ask HN: Please share your experience teaching your kids to program
I learned to program in middle school and I loved it, you couldn't tear me away from the school Commodore Pet.

My kid we played with scratch for a bit and she had fun making some games but it fizzled out after a few weeks. No real love. I gave up. Maybe I'll try again in a few years.

There are coding classes and they're all very popular but to me it seems pushy parents signing up their children, none of them seem to enjoy it.

x87678r··on System Design Interview book review
Its pretty sad at the end of the page it talks about other resources, the first few are 2008 ish. I'd expect them to be obsolete, but is that just become the industry standard now? FAANG SD interviews are such a mystery and the we never comment response doesn't help.
x87678r··on I almost quit caffeine in one year
I like coffee though for the flavor, the caffeine is not the point. I'd like decaf but never found any I like and the decaf process looks pretty sketchy with lots of chemicals.
x87678r··on Microsoft job posting suggests a major user interface update expected in 2021
There have been rumors about the 'Sun Valley' gui refresh for months. This is from October https://www.windowscentral.com/windows-10-sun-valley-ui-octo.... Its not exactly a surprised either, Windows 10 was released in 2016(?).
x87678r··on EFF to FinCEN: Stop Pushing for More Financial Surveillance
Terrorist acts are only part of it though. Sure 9/11 was cheap but implementing punitive sanctions across countries hundreds officials requires an awful lot of tracking and monitoring.

As regulators catch up you can expect same forms and reporting for any crypto account as a regular account. If you ignore the rules expect big penalties until you comply- just like how banks have been paying billions in fines and are now tarpits of paperwork.

x87678r··on EFF to FinCEN: Stop Pushing for More Financial Surveillance
> Cryptocurrencies is the future

No they aren't. especially when:

> Our old-fashioned bank system is far from perfect but it is harder to do illegal things unnoticed, banks report thousands of cases to authorities every year.

The website is a bunch of affiliate links, I'm not convinced this is a loss to the world. https://www.goodcheapandfast.com/
x87678r··on SolarWinds: The more we learn, the worse it looks
Do we even really know it was Russia? Everything I've seen so far seems to assume that rather than have a confirmed link.

edit: source seems to be Washington Post article "according to people familiar with the matter, who requested anonymity"

x87678r··on BadEconomics: Putting $400M of Bitcoin on your company balance sheet
It has been a very good strategy so far. Stock is up 3x in a few months. Hopefully MicroStrategy can spin off the software part of the business and just buy bitcoin.
x87678r··on A group of Google workers have announced plans to unionize
From the definition of unions there isn't much overlap. Yes they want to protect Google Workers from harassment which is valuable but doesn't sound like they're fighting for improving wages, benefits, or working conditions. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labor_unions_in_the_United_Sta...
x87678r··on A group of Google workers have announced plans to unionize
Yeah that doesn't look like any union I've ever seen.
x87678r··on Why Clojure? (2018)
Has anyone seen a big - multi year system done in FP? Lots of people love FP, it seems great for your own side project, but I'm not convinced it works in those typical big corporate systems where devs turn over every few years as the code base grows.
x87678r··on Atlassian Cloud ToS section 3.3(I) prohibits discussing performance issues
I thought Jira was slow then our team started using Service Now. Holy that is junk.
x87678r··on SolarWinds hackers were able to access Microsoft source code
Agreed C# and Java are virtually identical. However the cultuer is completely different. The plethora of libraries to me ends up being a handicap. We have had a bunch of different Java developers on our project and each one does things differently so we end up with a huge mess. I didn't see such problems in C# world where maybe we just had better devs that concentrated on clean models instead of incorporating fashionable libraries and other moving parts.
x87678r··on SolarWinds hackers were able to access Microsoft source code
I worked on a big distributed system with C# and windows servers. Was rock solid I miss it so much. I'm not drowning in Java/Spring/Linux app its such a horrible mess, security is the worst nightmare but even stuff like NFS is regularly breaks. Windows was great.
x87678r··on Why Jira Sucks
Its Jira combined with outsourced or contract developers that only care about getting that feature added. Our app is a mess, loaded with technical debt and hugely difficult to support and use. 90% of devs dont care, they do add their one piece of new functionality and move on to the next one or next project.
x87678r··on Bitcoin is a disaster
BTC is so pointless to me. The problem is it keeps going up. It looks like its more likely to hit $100,000 before $0, so you can still make a lot of money by buying now. Which is why I bought some.
x87678r··on Ditching Excel for Python in a legacy industry
Yes I use Excel DNA, it just doesn't have the same flexibility that I can email anyone a spreadsheet file containing both code and data.
x87678r··on Ditching Excel for Python in a legacy industry
I do a lot of both. Excel really is great for data where there are less than say 100k rows. Its just so easy to see exactly what you're doing and what the data looks like. If you have millions of records Python really does better but I still find it frustrating to find a way to keep peeking behind the curtain.

Ideally I'd have a type safe language which can embed data the way excel does. If Excel had dotnet languages instead of VBA and could store data arrays in XLBs it'd slay.

x87678r··on Britain’s electricity since 2010: fossil fuel use nearly halves
> much, much better alternatives already available

Such as? Wind/Solar/Hydro/Batteries all have their weak points.

x87678r··on Britain’s electricity since 2010: fossil fuel use nearly halves
> is likely equally as bad as atmospheric CO2 increase for the health of the earth.

I'd disagree

> biogas is at best carbon neutral/slightly positive

Of course that's the point - much better than oil/gas/coal. Yes ideally we'd like energy with no downside. Burning renewables is a great compliment to solar/wind.

x87678r··on Britain’s electricity since 2010: fossil fuel use nearly halves
If you close you steelworks and factories then import all your goods from China your emissions do go down.

I realize shipping woodchips across the Atlantic isn't eco friendly, but how is burning wood and straw greenwashing?
x87678r··on Interview advice that got me offers
> Same kind of person who never finds a partner because of the "ceremony around" dating, I guess?

Surely its the person who gets married and doesn't have to deal with that any more. Its a good reason to stay in a company a long time, like the OP says.

x87678r··on Interview advice that got me offers
How many interviews do people do a year? I've been in my job 5 years and the one before that 8, I've had 4 interviews in the last 10 years. I kinda feel at a big advantage for not job hopping. It seems some people interview a dozen times a year just as normal.

Should I try to get 10 interviews just for practice before interviewing companies I really like?

x87678r··on Interview advice that got me offers
> If they are too high I'm usually upfront that at that rate they'd be flat compensation wise for a number of years

I think its good to communicate that they wont be getting raises. I've taken a few jobs where I've been paid well above average, it feels great then you dont get any pay rises for a few years which makes you feel like you're aren't doing a good job.

x87678r··on Robinhood was indeed too good to be true
> "I want this stock right now, you can decide what the price is"

No this is too pessimistic, there are best execution rules which say the broker must get the best price possible. It can trade off exchange with a hedge fund, in a dark pool or internally with another customer, but the price must be better than that of the exchange bid/ask.
