Don't worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing Bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that Never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4 PM on some idle Tuesday

x86x87··on Selfish reasons to want more humans
Lol. Save the planet? The planet is going to be fine. We need to save ourselves! How should we do this? Less people of course /s

I can this the "tragedy of software development": the pyromaniacs are the firefighters.
x86x87··on Certain dogs are capable of learning the names for more than 100 different toys
That's not crating though. Having the option to stay there only if it's desirable makes this just another part of the house.
x86x87··on Marketplace of Girl Influencers Managed by Moms, Stalked by Men
> She warned mothers not to make their children social media influencers. “With the wisdom and knowledge I have now, if I could go back, I definitely wouldn’t do it,” she said. “I’ve been stupidly, naïvely, feeding a pack of monsters, and the regret is huge.”

Just wow. Lady you're the fucking monster for prioritizing money over your kid. Seems like we are ready to blame everyone except the moms.

I feel sorry for the kids as they are basically fucked for life. I have zero sympathy for the parents.

x86x87··on The data is in: RTO policies don't improve employee performance or company value
Imho it's not silly.

You have to look at the impact it has on aggregate. WFH is going to prevail in the medium to long term. It's inevitable.

x86x87··on The data is in: RTO policies don't improve employee performance or company value
But but.... What about all those watercooler conversation? The spontaneous ideas riffing? The surges in team energy? /s
x86x87··on Stop Basing Your Self-Worth on Other People's Opinions
We all care about what others think. We are social creatures with that experience real consequences for anti-social behavior. You still have to filter things and pick your battlea.
x86x87··on Magic AI Secures $117M to Build an AI Software Engineer
Fwiw my question was rethorical.

And it was meant to highlight that even if you have the tech (which we don't - the cheap tricks chatgpt or copilot do are impressive but still cheap tricks - are super expensive when it comes to actually training the models) it may not make economic sense to deploy them.

Even if it makes sense to deploy them the social unrest and volatility that will result in society may not end up well. (What's the point if all the consumers go away or they cannot actually buy the shit you're producing)

x86x87··on Magic AI Secures $117M to Build an AI Software Engineer
Just wait until ai invents its own npm that people are no longer able to understand. Good luck with that.
x86x87··on Magic AI Secures $117M to Build an AI Software Engineer
This brings a very interesting question: if you could have an AI software engineer today but it would cost you 1 trillion dollars, would you want and be able to afford it?

There is a reason why we still have people working at McDonald's even though fully automating it has been possible for a couple of decades now.

x86x87··on Stop Basing Your Self-Worth on Other People's Opinions
I don't think this was the intent of the GF comment.

Of course that if you've been conditioned for something that is no longer a choice.

If you have a broken leg and someone tells you to walk it off you're going to think they are clueless. If you literally have a [chemical] imbalance and someone tells you that you should be happy instead of being sad it's not as clear cut observing it, but it's also as infeasible as walking off a broken leg. Btw: being conditioned for something literally alters the chemical your brain/body releases.

As with the broken leg, you need help to figure out how to walk until it heals. Realizing that you need help and seeking and accepting the help is critical. Part of that help can be reframing how you view your interactions to transform what used to be implied and automatic to now being a choice.

x86x87··on The Layoff
Have you considered using an AI bot to help you balance various aspects carefully? :)
x86x87··on The Layoff
No no no. You are so successful that we need to promote you to being a customer!!!
x86x87··on The Layoff
This kind of severance is a thing of the past.

I predict a new type of employement will emerge as a result of the late stage capitalism we are experiencing: the just in time employment. Where you are technically employed all the time but you are not paid [the same] when the corpo has you in the idle bucket. The drones will stay on for the health insurance, minimum pay, the illusion of work right around the corner. Heck, we also may have corpos form big pools of disposables that allow them to elastically scale the number of people that currently work on something up and down. Remember folks! JustInTime Employment!

x86x87··on A US productivity boom may explain how inflation slowed amid a strong economy
Even if you do zero extra work you will be more rested. Additionaly being able to eat healthier at home is going to pay dividends.
x86x87··on A US productivity boom may explain how inflation slowed amid a strong economy
Here is one: i don't have to commute for 2 hours each day and out of those hours I spend 1.5 hours working. So i work 5*1.5 morr hours in any given week.
x86x87··on Mark Zuckerberg says Quest 3 'is the better product, period'
Not saying it'd a good idea. Was just pointing out that it is possible.

Also the Apple Privacy dog and pony show is getting old and most people nowadays see right through it.

x86x87··on How much electricity does AI consume?
The difficulty gets periodically adjusted to generate a block roughly every 10 minutes.

It's not really about efficiency as it's about computing power and available miners.

If it's not economically beneficial to mine (costs more than reward) miners will stop mining leading to the difficulty decreasing which in turns makes it profitable to mine again.

x86x87··on How much electricity does AI consume?
That's not how it works. It actually adjusts to the available computing power. This is builtin to the protocol.
x86x87··on How much electricity does AI consume?
More than the entire country of Argentina?
x86x87··on How much electricity does AI consume?
Not sure where bitcoin got dragged into the conversation. Also not sure how BTC becomes less efficient by design. The hardware BTC is mined on has improved exponentially over time moving from general purpose cpus to gpus to custom asics.
x86x87··on How much electricity does AI consume?
Or another way to look at it: this is day one. Usage will just continue to growth.
x86x87··on Mark Zuckerberg says Quest 3 'is the better product, period'
Let's figure out if it's better: Can you watch porn on the Quest 3? Yes, yes you can.
x86x87··on AI needs so much power that old coal plants are sticking around
But does it need more power than the whole country of Argentina or not?

Should we ban AI because of the ridiculous power consumption and the negligible return compares to the environmental damage caused?

> Having contracted for people in cryptocurrency making sniping bots and other tools previously I learned within a few months that I want to have nothing to so with this environment. It is so absurdly crowded with scammers and takers and just the absolute worst kinds of human behavior. It is actually player versus player in the real world.
x86x87··on I'm the guy who bought 259684 Bitcoins for under $3000 yesterday (2011)
Using the same line of reasoning: drug dealers use the us dollar. I don't want to have anything to do with drugs and drug dealears therefore I want nothing to do with any environment that uses us dollars.
x86x87··on I'm the guy who bought 259684 Bitcoins for under $3000 yesterday (2011)
Wow. That's a really high horse you're riding over there. Are you saying that the "crypto bros" are using free electricity to power the likes of bitcoin?

If they are paying for the electricity what are you actually arguing against? The free market? Freedom?

Next time you start getting ideas abour banning things look into history for examples when banning shit was attempted and what happened.

x86x87··on I'm the guy who bought 259684 Bitcoins for under $3000 yesterday (2011)
This is unsubstantiated by the fact that it does not make sense to mine on GPUs. And it hasn't made sense in years.
x86x87··on I'm the guy who bought 259684 Bitcoins for under $3000 yesterday (2011)
But let's blame it on crypto anyway? This makes zero sense
