...because getting caching right on a dynamic database-driven content management system is so easy.
wzy··on The complicated futility of WordPress
This must explain why WordPress has been losing market share every year for more than a decade, right?
wzy··on The Casio employee behind the “Sleng Teng” riddim that revolutionized reggae
It's just a euphemism for marijuana. "Unda mi sleng teng" is being under the influence of marijuana.
wzy··on Show HN: I built a no-BS recipe search engine
Be careful not to point your scraper at those mommy recipe bloggers that have a story about their grandma before the recipe. Most of the well know ones are making 6 figures a year from their blog and will fight, tooth and nail, to make sure their content is not reproduced anywhere on the internet (not even the title), except for a SERP.

wzy··on U.S. to require negative Covid-19 tests for international air passengers
I am glad you picked up on the substantive point of my argument.
wzy··on U.S. to require negative Covid-19 tests for international air passengers
We have 2 private labs that can handle PCR tests and the turn-around is 24-48 hours, best case. Now, 1 of the 2 is booked out till February.
wzy··on U.S. to require negative Covid-19 tests for international air passengers
This will now place a strain on the testing facilities of small countries (islands) that are a popular destination of American tourists.

In Jamaica, every lab that has been approved to conduct the PCR test has been overwhelmed by a flood a Canadian tourists who now need a negative PCR test result to return home. Mind you, smaller countries have been having an uphill battle with procuring the reagents needed for the PCR tests because countries like the US is grabbing up everything COVID related, and not using them.

Had the US implemented these measures 9 months ago, the entire world would have looking at the tail-end of this pandemic, instead of waiting for the US to catchup with what every other country considers as a best practice.

wzy··on Goodreads plans to retire API access, disables existing API keys
> Amazon doesn't want Goodreads data to be used to add value to their competitors'

This is it exactly. Goodreads was/is the best/largest source of information on books available online.

wzy··on Show HN: PDF Inverter for macOS (In Golang) Darken Your PDFs
So PDF viewers apps on MacOS do not support color changing by way of accessibility options?
wzy··on Why does a new Rails app need 106 MB of JavaScript?
How is it bloat if 160MB of JavaScript will never be in the production version of the app?

I mean, the Basecamp team just published Hey.com with less the 50KB of JavaScript and their dev build of Rails for that project must've exceeded 160MB in `node_modules`.

wzy··on Turn recipe websites into plain text
With the amount of money an average recipe blogger can make from display ads inserted in those stories, they really and truly don't care if it annoys John Q. Public.

I can't believe the one item that was so obviously added as a joke went right over head.

It may be good idea to take a break from the computer and find something less stressful to do.

wzy··on Removing Coordinated Inauthentic Behavior from China
"We’re taking down these Pages, Groups and accounts based on their behavior, not the content they posted."

Hmm...

wzy··on Rails 6.0
What?! Rails has been announced as dead at the release of almost every new MVC framework. The last major proclamation was when Phoenix was the new hotness.
wzy··on Show HN: Nullboard – Simple, light, locally-stored to-do lists
11px fonts, really? For the sake of the well-being of users, increase the default on size.
wzy··on Google AdWords Exploit Seen in the Wild
Am I the only one who had to set their browser zoom to 500% to read the contents of the screenshots?
wzy··on Native Javascript alternatives to jQuery methods
Seems like a great reason from me to keep using jQuery. It's not as if I was eschewing React and such, to write SPAs with jQuery.

jQuery is a utility that abstract/hides away all the hideousness that is JavaScript and its prototypes-based nature. And it does its jobs well, plus it has universal support.

Above all -- "work smarter, not harder".

wzy··on I Miss Rails
I can fondly remember me trying out a Node-based framework back in the day and deciding it wasn't for me because I couldn't decipher an error that was halting the application.

Then, I decided to delete the folder.

I remember watching Windows building the list of about 1GB+ of files to delete. Only to have it try but couldn't complete the deletion process because some file names were too long because of the recursive nature of folders and dependencies in `node_module`.

Good times!

wzy··on I Miss Rails
