wylie··on NPM 'accidentally' removes Stylus package, breaks builds and pipelines
According to comments on the GitHub project, it’s been restored to NPM. https://github.com/stylus/stylus/issues/2938
wylie··on Superblocks Announces $37m Funding
Assuming this is a real question- the company doesn’t have 18 CEOs on the team. It does have about 18 investors listed. Does that clarify it?
wylie··on Is WebAssembly magic performance pixie dust? (2021)
A group of smart WebAssembly experts tried to start a company around the idea of incrementally porting to WebAssembly, and wrote an excellent post-mortem of why that didn't work: https://zaplib.com/docs/blog_post_mortem.html
wylie··on RAWGraphs: missing link between spreadsheets and data visualization
I'm one of the developers of Lens, and I agree that it's not the right fit for every problem. The way I categorize the different types of interfaces in my mind is a spectrum from:

* "shelf based" drag & drop like Lens, Tableau and most spreadsheets

* Query-based, where you type a query using SQL or another grammar and choose from a template

* High level code like ggplot, Vega or Observable's new Plot

* Low level code like D3

Since you're a developer, maybe you'd benefit from looking at one of the high level visualization grammars.

wylie··on Licensing changes to Elasticsearch and Kibana
That's not accurate: there is a contributor agreement but it does not assign copyright. https://www.elastic.co/contributor-agreement
wylie··on Pandora to Buy Rdio Assets for $75M, Rdio Files Ch.11, Will Shutter Service
Any detail about what's going to happen to existing user accounts? As an Rdio subscriber, I want to make sure my existing collections and playlists don't just get deleted.
wylie··on Ben Fathi: Why I Joined CloudFlare
I think I missed the context on who Ben Fathi is. Can anyone fill me in?
wylie··on Angular 2 Survey Results
The Angular team listened to the community and has been working on an upgrade path. I found this blog post useful in convincing my team that we are not going to be wasting time as long as we continue to follow angular and JS best practices:

wylie··on Taxonomies of Lost NYC Playgrounds
I'm missing some context here- what happened to these playgrounds? Why have they gone missing? For example, it looks like Central Park still has a lot of playgrounds. http://www.centralpark.com/guide/activities/children-s-activ...
wylie··on My accidental experiment on seller psychology
I've been socialized to think that cutting lines of any sort (especially of the kind mentioned in the article) is rude, both to the other customers in line and to the shopkeeper. If I try, someone will usually speak up and try to enforce the "order" of the line. Is this different in other cultures?
wylie··on A brand new Foursquare, with a brand new logo and look
Foursquare has been promising this since the beginning, it's why I keep using it and checking in. Hoping this lives up to the promise, since their current recommendations are pretty static.
wylie··on Students build auto-tracking Nerf turret with Arduino and Kinect
Is there a link to the source code or blog post? Seems like this would be a great starting point to build a game on.
wylie··on Lifelink – The Peer-to-Peer Life Counter for Magic: The Gathering
It's meant to be used while you're already playing Magic the Gathering or another other card game, as opposed to using dice or paper
wylie··on Lavabit Proceedings Unsealed [pdf]
That looks like a reference to another case, United States vs. Forrester, where Forrester and Alba were the defendants[0].

wylie··on Lavabit Proceedings Unsealed [pdf]
Even though the name and email of the suspect are redacted, it says that the suspect is being investigated for 18 U.S.C. §§ 641, 793d-e, and 798(a)(3). This is exactly what Edward Snowden was charged under[0].

wylie··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (May 2013)
SEEKING WORK - New York, Boston, or Remote

I'm a designer and developer, with experience building responsive frontend apps and mobile apps.

Most recently, I designed and built the website for Backspaces (http://backspac.es), an app for telling stories from your phone. I am very experienced with Javascript on the frontend and backend, and with libraries like Backbone.js and Socket.io. I am also experienced with Python, using Django and Tornado.

My portfolio is available at http://wylie.su

wylie··on Ask HN: Accepting Bitcoin for freelance work
Thank you for the links. The first step is to find a client who would pay via Bitcoin, but I figure if businesses can accept Bitcoin then so can I.

I will definitely update you if I go through with it.

wylie··on Ask HN: Accepting Bitcoin for freelance work
I would consider offering a discount of sorts when paying via bitcoin, or setting a fixed conversion rate (right now something like $120 per BTC has been fairly stable).

But I agree, there's nothing to prevent me from accepting the money via normal means, and simply buying my own bitcoins.

wylie··on Everything I know about design I learned playing Starcraft
I think the article would be the same no matter which tool he were using. It's about a process of fast iterations in design, which is possible when you're this comfortable with the tool. I'd compare it to using dev tools to mock up a website, it just reduces friction for something you could do manually.

wylie··on If You’re Thinking of Launching a Social Media Startup, Please Don’t
As someone working on a social media app, I call bullshit. "The funding for these companies is plentiful because there is a serious bubble?" Now is the worst possible time to be building a new social network, because of the failures of Facebook, Zynga, Groupon, and pretty much everything else last year. Investors have a pack mentality, as he says, but the pack has totally shifted.

Also, he claims that Facebook and others' business models have failed because they don't convert well, or because their users are "forced" to use them. So what if only some Pages have used the product? Those are the companies that get value from it, and they'll continue to pay for it. And Facebook has other sources of revenue. I hardly think it's an example of a failed business model.

wylie··on Connections don't build things
This is a blog on the Svbtle network: https://svbtle.com
wylie··on Discourse
Sounds like an open source Branch. It has most of the same features (real-time, can have separate threads, moderation), but with participation from anyone.
wylie··on Why police lie under oath
I think only mods can edit submissions, maybe they'll notice if this stays on the homepage long enough
wylie··on Why police lie under oath
There's a typo in the link, the one that works for me is: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/03/opinion/sunday/why-police-...
wylie··on Facebook Isn't Worth It
Even though Facebook is really big for photos, there are dedicated apps/platforms for sharing photos or albums with people that do a better job, especially where privacy is an issue (like baby photos). I don't see any advantage to using Facebook over a dedicated app or just email.
wylie··on Valve Pushes Out Half-Life For Linux
Thanks for confirming! I'm doing the same.
wylie··on Valve Pushes Out Half-Life For Linux
Does this mean anything for Half-Life on a Mac?
wylie··on How Tide Detergent Became a Drug Currency
It's possible that this is a viral marketing campaign to get you to think exactly that. Other comments go into detail, but it seems impractical to do this on a large scale as mentioned in the article.
