wyck··on Martin Shkreli is buying websites associated with the names of journalists
He jacked up the price for insurance companies, individuals paid 1$ if they have no insurance. He considered it a robber baron technique to get funding for new drug research to charge the insurance companies, whom have lots of $$ for PR firms to twist the narrative in the MSM, big pharma is a thing. If you think he some sort of evil villain you've eaten the PR.
wyck··on Yes, Google Uses Its Power to Quash Ideas It Doesn’t Like
This is an accurate example of today's internet news machine. Very few highly investigated sourced articles compared to the extremely high volume, low pay, click bait titles. The media is strangled by their diminished role and costs, most outlets have gone for the low hanging fruit for the clickbait generation.

The good news is that strong brands are now dumping google Ads for more trustworthy sources, if Google's trust continues to erode they will eventually turn into a flea market for advertisement.

wyck··on Martin Shkreli is buying websites associated with the names of journalists
Nothing of what you said is actually true, in fact it sounds exactly like what most journalists say about Shkreli, and the reason why he hates them.
wyck··on Some Apple employees may quit over new 'open' office floor plan
> Executives believe that an environment without cubicles fosters collaboration, innovation and creativity. Research has backed up some of these claims.

Pretty much all the research I've read into this actually says the exact opposite.

wyck··on Read Apple CEO Tim Cook's Email to Employees About Charlottesville
Alternative title: Tim Cook apparently doesn't understand current politics, thus proving why a business's which sells products should not get involved in political press releases.
wyck··on Canadian cable companies interrogate, search Montréal software developer
Actually it does, in Quebec it's a civil law, in the rest of Canada its a common law, big difference.
wyck··on Canadian cable companies interrogate, search Montréal software developer
Quebec having draconian ass backwards laws...no way.
wyck··on `Bro culture' at startups keeps talented women out: Harvey Mudd President
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hjernevask I recommend watching this, it will shatter some preconceptions.
wyck··on `Bro culture' at startups keeps talented women out: Harvey Mudd President
What about bro culture in plumbing and sanitation, does that keep women out? Or maybe the fact that women in progressive free countries have to choice to choose a career path they might actually be interested in?

That's why the 25% stat is bullshit. I'm not denying bro culture is a problem, but its not the complete reason why there is a low adoption rate.

wyck··on In Neanderthal DNA, Signs of a Mysterious Human Migration
Unless you are secretly Ozzy Osbourne, something I always suspected, https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/ozzy-osbourne-gen...
wyck··on [dead]
Nice PR piece.

>finding a solution for people that want to escape bureaucracy.

So that's the business model?

wyck··on The secret negotiations behind the Hong Kong handover
The photo of Deng Xiaoping and Thatcher is pretty funny given the subtext of almost starting WW3. Good article, for context I recommend reading about the early history of Hong Kong related to the Sassoon family, HSBC, and the Opium wars.
wyck··on Hackers Are Hijacking Phone Numbers and Breaking into Email, Bank Accounts
The is a direct correlation between security and fraud related interest/insurance in regards to the cost of use and exposure to fraud.

They aren't out to "destroy" your security, it's a liability threshold calculation. At the end of the day secure yourself in life, this include choosing banks that are more stringent based on your needs and what you want to pay.

wyck··on Prozac Nation Is Now the United States of Xanax
It's an interesting concept but I think the application would be troubling. Corporate responsibility is a system that's not particularity well suited a tool for spiritual or emotional guidance at an automated level. You can argue it is the very culprit for increased anxiety in the face of an automated workforce, and an escalating competitive workforce intellect amongst the population at large.

tl'dr You recharge you batteries in life a number of healthy and natural ways.

wyck··on Why So Few Women Break Through Tech's Bro Culture
Or maybe in more self-determining(aka free and developed) countries women actually have more choice in career paths and a lot of them don't even like computers, let alone programming. Unlike nations without as much privilege or freedom which have much higher ratios of women engineers/programmers for obvious reasons.

Does bro culture exist in plumbing and sanitation? What about non-bro culture in nursing. Sounds damn stupid.

The actual science on this subject is pretty interesting, to bad the pseduo-journalists don't read any of it.

I recommend watching this, it's amazing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hjernevask

wyck··on Did the Intercept bungle the NSA leak?
I have great name for this start-up, Minority Report...or maybe just boring old Palentir.
wyck··on Visualize data instantly with machine learning in Google Sheets
To be honest no, I don't use sheets unless it's for something quick and dirty, it just doesn't compare to excel. In terms of machine learning I have tried IBM Watson with sets of data, interesting concept but I found myself still juggling the data to get what I wanted. I currently use Tableau.
wyck··on Visualize data instantly with machine learning in Google Sheets
They are solving a problem that doesn't really exist, the challenge is not the last step of a data report, it's the steps involved in the beginning, getting good data in, formatting, joining multiple sources, automation, dealing with junk data, procedures, etc.

I don't understand the example, what's the difference between typing "Show me a line graph" and clicking a button in excel that does the same thing.

wyck··on Improving advertising on the web
Google is reacting very slowly to their declining ad revenue model in the face of social media and influencers, they are stuck with a degraded experience/platform.

It will be interesting to watch how they are going to salvage their ad network with a much more ad-aware and a younger demographic with purchasing power.

Time to pivot, but I doubt this will work or the recent chrome ad free beta.

wyck··on The Rise and Maybe the Fall of Influencers
No I don't realise that, because its not accurate.

NYTimes: Print advertising revenue in 2016 fell 16 percent, driving a 9 percent drop in total advertising revenue. For the quarter, print advertising revenue declined 20 percent. Digital advertising revenue rose 6 percent last year. Adjusted operating profit, the company’s preferred method for assessing performance, fell to $241 million last year, from $289 million in 2015. Operating profit dropped to $102 million, from $137 million.

^ Says everything you need to know about what is going on, and jokes, although crude, are jokes.

wyck··on The Rise and Maybe the Fall of Influencers
NYtimes questioning influencers because it undermines their own content, HA!

From the article: PewDiePie, a YouTube star who had signed deals with Disney and Google and then was discovered to have made anti-Semitic statements.

...100% bullshit smear campaign by the WSJ not mentioned...

Influencers must create trust and manage their own base, just like any other brand. The losers at the end of that stick are ad driven media outlets like NyTimes and Google. People creating content is not going anywhere and neither is the power of social media. Sure some top end influences are practically just product pushing robots, but this landscape will even out to be more genuine and niche based.

The long ugly decline of traditional media grasping at straws is not over, the revenue will continue to plummet. The title should be "The continual fall of the MSM as the internet continues to erode it's value."

wyck··on Theresa May to create new internet controlled and regulated by government
The technology exists to firewall entire countries, afterall the ISP's connect to the larger "pipes", this has already happened in several countries. Sure you could probably tunnel a connection but the average person certainly can't, this fractures the internet.
wyck··on How I Used Twilio, Python and Google to Automate My Wedding
Nothing says special like sending SMS weddings invites...

I think what he means is a wedding is a symbolic event that should be mirrored in all the small details, from the hand written card, to the ring, etc, etc... So ya think about it.

wyck··on How I Used Twilio, Python and Google to Automate My Wedding
Yes and computers run on magical energy dust.
wyck··on The Next WordPress
This is completely wrong. The more eyes you have on something, the more hackers attacking something combined with more pen testers and coders working on it, the more secure it is.

You know what is insecure and makes for a great target..software developed by few people, updated infrequently by people who don't care. The exact opposite of WordPress.

wyck··on YouTube TV
Licensing for most countries is applied to broadcasters, not creators.
wyck··on YouTube TV
The geo-restricted licensing model is applied because Google has no choice in the matter. They have to abide by laws just like everyone else.
wyck··on Why Do DMT Users See Insects from a Parallel Universe?
Is there a theory that the DMT "beings" are actually your bodies cells and proteins visualised and communicating as different entities?

The whole "You should not be down here, but hello" at a very very self macro level? Maybe even at the atomic level?

wyck··on Twitter’s Chief Technology Officer to Leave Company
Can and will are not the same, that's why your fears are irrational. Unless you have some specific point on why he would as you say "push the button".

Anyhow this was about censoring an opinion on Twitter, if you want to dilute your judgement then by all means go ahead, but this does come at a cost and censoring someone one twitter to prevent an imaginary war is certainly a stretch of the imagination, and I'm being polite.

There is an actual argument that Hillary was going to impose a no fly zone on Russia in Syria. Would that have somehow alleviated tensions? Let's not forget about the red line, the sarin gas smuggled out of Libya (Bengazi), and the murder of Qaddafi in the streets, all very pertinent to the region. But alas I talk about things which can be argued and not "feelings", the hallmark of the emotionally comprised.

wyck··on Twitter’s Chief Technology Officer to Leave Company
So you thing censorship is the answer to your irrational fears?

Thank god we don't live in the 17th century or you would be burning people at the stake for the same reasons.
