wyck··on Jonathan Albright, a Digital Sleuth Exposing Fake News
I agree, reads like a pure bio PR, the title says it all. Lots of trust building about his personally, the usual pantomime of nazi's and Russian bots, no bias there..

So we should't trust content pushed by people centric platforms, and only trusted news sources with well written introductions..

wyck··on Social Media’s Dial-Up Ancestor: The Bulletin Board System (2016)
Anonymity is very comforting, you brought your discussion to the table without stereotype or preconception getting in the way, much like this very site and the reason why reddit is so popular. It is the basis for free discussion, a foundation pillar of the internet.

It's truly amazing that the early internet was a social experaince that went though a weird product/service commercial driven phase, and now we find ourselves trying to balance both of those out.

wyck··on Grand Jury Indicts Russian Officers for Hacking Related to the 2016 Election
Hopefully Craig Murray is not on suicide watch.
wyck··on AI Nationalism
So you're saying we are going to digitize emotional bias and pretend it's more intelligent decision making, and then hand that over to a corporation. Sounds like a winner.
wyck··on Nearly 80% of Japan’s Airbnbs removed in response to new home-share law
Not true in Canada, AirBnB breaks municipal and in some cases provincial laws for short term rentals. Thousands of houses are in no rent zones and AirBnB knows damn well. The tactic to combat these rentals is to use provincial & city inspectors who levy huge taxes and prohibit short-term rentals with the landlords, but they are very understaffed and generally ineffective.

AirbNB is getting away with very grey legal area here, they should he held legally accountable for facilitating illegal rentals. Right now my tax dollars are paying for the government to enforce what AirBnB sells without impunity.

On a personal note I'm thinking of pursuing this legally with AirBnB and/or my city, my street has 4 illegal AirBnB rentals on it and my city can't see to enforce their own laws. There's enough interest in my region to easily get about 30 people on board, and that's just one semi small town.

And we don't blame the users of AirBnB, they dont know the local laws, we blame the landlords and ultimately the platform.

I know in west coast tourism destinations you will practically get beat up if your renting out to airBnB illegally since it has such a negative effect on local housing prices.

wyck··on Microsoft acquires Github
Maybe because they always put developers fist, this acquisition is a perfect fir for the brand and legacy.

You comment makes no sens, "I don't understand if you are a programmer', no offense but what rock do you live under?

wyck··on Google Duplex: An AI System for Accomplishing Real World Tasks Over the Phone
> People who answer phones to take bookings perform an extremely limited set of questions and responses,

But that in itself is not even true across the industry, some(most) phone bookings are very complex, otherwise they would just use a web interface.

wyck··on Facebook is launching a dating feature
You mean Facebook is launching a dating service for divorced moms?
wyck··on Facebook is launching a dating feature
And jobs, a huge threat to job sites.
wyck··on New Shepard's 8th test flight [video]
I would assume there is a backup chute that can be deployed, probably with an altimeter that can auto far if manual deployment fails.
wyck··on Sky Diving Cured My Depression
There is a real downside to this not spoken about. If/when you get hooked into an adrenaline based lifestyle and for some reason have to leave the lifestyle behind (financial, family, injuries) it can be extremely devastating to not do what was in essence keeping you alive. Still worth it but the crash can be worse than the cure, unless you figure out how to persevere gracefully.
wyck··on Based on his testimony today, Mark Zuckerberg puts users last during a crisis
Exactly, because the DNC (Hillary, Obama) used the same data techniques. The head of Hillary's election marketing even tweeted about this and was a catalyst for the recent news, but not a peep from the media.

It was the Russians....lol.

wyck··on Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook hearing was a sham
America needs to look at citizen privacy laws like they have in Canada and the E.U.

For example if I log into the Facebook business manager for a company I can see tons of data on Americans but not nearly as many details for Canadians, it's because of these laws. The new E.U. laws are even stricter with regards to personal data and how it's used, no matter who you are.

Why there is no demand for this level of protection in the States by its citizens and representatives is crazy.

Anyone who expects goodwill from Facebook, Google or any company is seriously misguided. Privacy laws need to be in place, actual laws that are bound my the federal legal system, and not just state regulations.

wyck··on In 2004, Zuckerberg Broke Into a Facebook User's Private Email Account (2010)
A brand founded by a deceitful, insecure, and altogether immature person is a problem when is effects so many people's lives. News at 11.
wyck··on PeerTube: A decentralized video hosting network, based on free software
Unfortunately these things don't work because the general public needs something simple, centralised, rich in content, and which has the momentum of actual people using it. Technology doesn't help, it's about timing it the right application at the right time.
wyck··on It's not just Facebook. Thousands of companies are spying on you
Geo-location is the scary metric, peoples habits / when/ where is a trove of data, it can be analyzed much more deeply.
wyck··on Ask HN: Are there any purely keyword-based search engines with no NLP?
Sorry to be clear, I meant that to find information you always had to do bit of digging, it's true the algorithm has changed a lot.
wyck··on Towards a world without Facebook
Facebook capitalised by being in the right place at the right time, a time when the internet was opened to the non-tech savy, the "regular" world spilled into what was already a social experience. This is why Facebook now has the moniker of the "mom" platform. Technology like blockchain might free the business model from having to generate revenue and better align the experaince.

But I have an easier time believing people will just dump social media than some Utopian public social ledger is going to solve what is essentially a psychological shitfest.

wyck··on Ask HN: Are there any purely keyword-based search engines with no NLP?
Nothing has changed with Google (Bing and Duckduckgo are the same too more or less). 10 years ago it still did essentially the same thing, it's up to you to use the more advanced features to filter the results.

For example if you type "marco polo doctor's -doctor -who" or "marco polo doctors group:science".

wyck··on Ex-Google recruiter: I was fired because I resisted “illegal” diversity efforts
There's more than a few very large tech companies that have let politics and emotions take over from innovation and excellence. It's opened the door to mass demotivation because people know inherently what is fake and posturing over what is real, creative, and interesting.
wyck··on Google Announces Plan to Improve URLs for AMP Pages, but AMP Will Still Suck
I think the initial intention of creating a "good" search engine was there and a great social benefit, but after that it kinda went to hell.
wyck··on Facebook to Let Users Rank Credibility of News
I enjoy seeing FB sabotage thier brand into the ground, not because of it's service, but rather because of it's sess pool leadership.

My feed is basically a bullshit mill of news instead of actual "freinds" experiences. Even given the bullshit, a good % of the experience stuff is basically just selfie show-offs. It's almost become a mirror of the self, with very little socially valuable interaction.

oh you're on a beach ...like

oh you want to signal your virtue ..share

Facebook is starting to become the anti-social platform in the sense that it has an overall negative social effect.

wyck··on Paying journalists to promote brands in articles
Pretty obvious when you read practically anything these days that PR has taken over not just promotions but the entire narrative.
wyck··on Google Announces Plan to Improve URLs for AMP Pages, but AMP Will Still Suck
The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Google's new motto perhaps.

wyck··on As the U.S. Retreats, Canada Doubles Down on Net Neutrality
Is that why there is a virtual monopoly on internet connections and mobile options in Canada, and why Canadians pay some of the highest rates in the world for connectivity? Is this why Canadians only have one central news source, is the CRTC a bastion of freedom now all of a sudden? They do such a great job controling television and radio, let's trust them with the internet.
wyck··on The pitfalls of A/B testing in social networks

wyck··on How Booking.com manipulates users
The downsides of A/B testing. Unless of course you have confidence in your brand and decision making to not always trust users and the short term bottom line.
