wyck··on Secret’s founder returns with anti-loneliness app Ikaria
Wow had a flashback to the web 2.0 bubble. They must be really convincing at sales to get funding for something they can't even explain, again.
wyck··on The Deep Sea
I see sources citing 4600m and also 1500m (as normal), but some footnotes and referances to The Deep Sea stats would be nice.
wyck··on Show HN: Adventurekeep – A Toolkit for D&D
Very cool, since this is HN I would be nice to see what you're using to create this, is there a plugin system, roadmap, open source?
wyck··on So You Think You Want to Open a Brewery (2014)
and they become adults..
wyck··on Bye Bye Microsoft Office, Hello LibreOffice
That's not the point, I was commenting on the article.
wyck··on Why Are Canadian Construction Costs So High? (2018)
FYI Canada has 3 engineering firms in the world top 10, SNC-Lavalin with 50k employees, WSP with 44k employees, and Stantec with 22k.

Lack of experience and expertise is not the issue.

wyck··on Why Are Canadian Construction Costs So High? (2018)
>Quebec removed a blindfold with the Charbonneau Commission.

Sorry to digaree but he Charbonneau Commission did very little, corruption is still a huge problem in QC, it's part of the culture ..like Italy.

wyck··on Bye Bye Microsoft Office, Hello LibreOffice
What a ridiculous article. Nothing comparing the actual feature set and differant professional use cases.

If easydns is writing shallow blog fodder like this, should I expect the same thing from thier actual product line?

wyck··on I ditched Google for DuckDuckGo
Google Search / Youtube really push the MSM into the top results, it's really not what I'm looking for.

DDG results are meoicre.

It's weird when you can say internet search has devolved.

wyck··on Show HN: Who Arms the World?
This is usless without showing what is being sold, by who, and to whom.
wyck··on Designing the Facebook Company Brand
Well this is a mistake, not from a design perpective but from a brand one.
wyck··on Open Libra: An open platform for financial inclusion
>>Surveillance finance. One's ability to engage financially (e.g. borrow in Libra) will potentially be determined by their social graph and online activity.

Say what?

wyck··on Why Media Lab thought it was doing right by secretly accepting Epstein’s money
I think the point for this particular case, which you did allude to, is that there was nothing anonymous about the relationship. Everyone knew about it, some of them implicated directly in the actual court case (Minsky). This is more about a completely corrupt and toxic culture at Media Lab. It would have been more interesting to look deeper into Joi Ito for example and the posturing of several key players when exposed, than wax poetic about the blanket of anonymity.
wyck··on M.I.T. Media Lab concealed its relationship with Jeffrey Epstein
The founder of MIT's AI lab Marvin Minsky is accused of having sex with a minor via Epstein, there are several photos of MIT/Harvard scientists with Epstein on his island.

There is nothing anonymous about this at all. Negroponte has admitted he knew about Epstein's conviction in 2012.

And I quote "We all knew he went to jail for soliciting underage prostitution,” said Negroponte. “But we thought he served his term and repented."

What a fucking joke.

wyck··on Goodreads Is Broken
I don't know what people expect , you're going to have to do some digging to find the gems, like everything else in life. There no magical algorithm that can't be gamed or eventually skewed to be bland, boring, sales driven, and altogether less creatively interesting.

If you want real discussion nothing really beats the classic forum bulletin board.

wyck··on Why Google Poses a Serious Threat to Democracy, and How to End That Threat [pdf]
Google search has gone down the proverbial shithole in the last 2 years, and has been struggling long before that. Even for non political searches it returns horrible results. It's a threat in the short-term, and then it will be replaced since the algorithm is falling apart.
wyck··on New Evidence Suggests Satoshi Nakamoto Is Paul Le Roux
tl;dr Craig ratted out La Roux and the the icing on the cake is trying to steal La Roux's coins using a front for mining (and school funding, etc)? Ya that's not the full story, La Roux certainly knows about this unless he's in solitary, did anyone ask him;)
wyck··on It seems that Google is forgetting the old web
Matt did an incredible job at Google search and left in 2016, since then it's been downhill, not entirely because of him, but it's certainly a noticeable effect, especially if you followed Matt's google search related Q&A's, videos, etc when he was at Google.
wyck··on It seems that Google is forgetting the old web
Matt Cutts fallout.
wyck··on It seems that Google is forgetting the old web
Yes, i'm having to go several pages deep and even then not finding anything relevant, I've started to use other search engines and reddit to actually find useful info.
wyck··on A 26,000-Year Astronomical Monument Hidden in Plain Sight
Great article but I found this one easier to understand including quotes from the artist about how it works, https://www.quora.com/At-the-Hoover-Dam-what-is-the-meaning-...

For some reason the author doesn't even mention https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcyone_(star) which is written into the map.

What better place to preserve a star map than an indestructible cement dam in the desert.

wyck··on Google Takes Its First Steps Toward Killing the URL
Google continuing to undermine the founding principles of the web for that sweet sweet ad revenue, a very minor part of the actual web experaince for a dwindling population of ad clickers. Digging a hole straight down sugarcoated with BS and delusion.
wyck··on Ask HN: What was the Internet like before corporations got their hands on it?
No, not at all.
wyck··on Ask HN: What was the Internet like before corporations got their hands on it?
It was amazing, so much energy and excitement. No one used HTTP, no one was selling anything. It was mainly about communication over usenet , email, and irc. Public ISP's didn't exist.

The corporations were not really the first one to monetise and usher in e-commerce/www, it was porn, this ushered in lots of new tech.

The internet switched from active participation to passive consumption, and now we have both except now everything is monetised, monitored, and moderated.

It was the wild west.

wyck··on UK police release airport drone suspects, admit there may not have been drones
The U.K. papers had diagrams of this said drone, including speculation of the actual model, cost($8k+) , I even saw a diagram of a superimposition of the drone over a airplane engine to show the relative size. They also mentioned the drone must have been hacked to bypass the built-in blackout software for airports.
wyck··on Ocasio-Cortez's Green New Deal Is a Winning Climate Strategy
Any system that ignore's incentives with regards to human behaviour will turn into a formula for tyranny and misery.
wyck··on Crypto Market Crash Leaving Bankrupt Startups in Its Wake
Let's all wait and see what Craig Wright is building with SPV ;)
wyck··on Ancient genomics is recasting the story of the Americas’ first residents
"Presumably also over the Bering land bridge" , certainly a big presumption giving that boats are a preferred means of long distance travel, but proving as such so far back must be practically impossible.
wyck··on Egypt's newly discovered tombs hold mummies, animal statues
It's a little deeper than that, cats were revered because they killed snakes, scorpions, rats, etc, around the house that did harm, pharaoh's having a particularity good pick of the litter, breeding was a part of temple life.

The most common cats in ancient Egypt are still around today, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_wildcat and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jungle_cat

wyck··on Product Updates Based on Your Feedback
It doesn't take long for the tide to turn when you compromise core values. Sugarcoating isn't going to work, I for one see your this trajectory as particularity troubling, if Google doesn't hold onto the reins of what little is left.
