wxl··on Dead pigs in Shanghai water supply don't ring alarm bells for Chinese officials
The article only mentions 2,813, not 5,000.
wxl··on Heroku API Unavailable
not anymore.
wxl··on [dead]
No, it's not.
wxl··on "brew install pass" -- the simple unix password manager now released for mac
What the hell? You can't encrypt filenames. I don't know where the hell you got the idea that you can.
wxl··on Facebook’s Camera app gets a new name: Camera•. Yes, “•”
Camera Bullet, I think.
wxl··on Twitter hash tags and UTF8
I was about to say it may have something to do with the fact that they're separate letters in other languages, like in Polish ą is a different letter, as are ć and ź. It may have something to do, though, with the fact that the ą sounds very similar to a, but ć and ź sound much different from c and z. (I'm only speaking from my very limited knowledge of Polish, I'm not sure about other languages.)

Very cool. However, many times it doesn't work well for HN. I've gone straight to a site from an HN post (like this post's[0] site[1]) and it doesn't show the HN post.

wxl··on Physical tactile buttons for touch screen devices
Touch-typing on any little keyboard like that is near impossible. On a normal keyboard, you're moving multiple fingers short distances. While on a little keyboard you're moving two fingers longer distances (key-wise, not actual distance). This makes it much harder to touch type since it's harder to judge where your fingers have to go.

This is at least my experience with little cellphone hard-keyboards, maybe it's different for others.

Regardless, braille would be really cool. Assuming the screens were high enough resolution (that is, could raise itself up accurately enough to make small dots) to display it.

wxl··on Stop hand coding, start Zen Coding
I don't edit HTML very much, but when I do, Zen coding helps so much. Especially since all you really need to know is CSS selector formatting.
wxl··on Ask HN: What are you Building?
A brain____ macro language and interpreter[0]. I've always really liked Brain____ and I wanted to make it easier to program in, and this is my attempt at that (still pretty early release, kinda buggy).

wxl··on Sal Khan's 'Academy' sparks a tech revolution in education
I really, really dislike Khan Academy. I'm in high school and at least one of my teachers thinks that it's a substitute for actually teaching us. He just puts on a Khan Academy video and we watch it the whole time. Usually we watch a few of them. That, and Sal's voice makes me want to rip my hair out. He repeats things, over and over, like:

"If the box moves five... five meters... five meters per second... five meters per second."

When you have to watch fourty-five minutes of these videos, it starts getting old. Real quick.

wxl··on Introducing Firefox 3D View for Developers
I'm pretty sure this has been out for a while, right?

Regardless, it's kinda neat. But it's more of a gimmicky thing to me. More of a "Hey look at this I can view websites in 3D!" thing you show your friends, not really something that would help in most situations. (There are probably exceptions, though. Like trying to debug the nesting of elements.)

wxl··on JugglerShu/XVim: Modal editing for Xcode 4
This is a seriously great piece of software. It works really well and integrates perfectly, making it feel like it was a part of Xcode all along. Wonderful work.
wxl··on John Gruber talks about the Talk Show leaving 5by5
I listened to it earlier, and am still confused as to what John meant by the "longstanding [business] disagreements" he had with Dan. However, I'm glad he moved it, I got tired of John just talking and Dan pretty much agreeing with whatever he said, and this is the reason I went from listening to almost all of the 5by5 podcasts to listening to none of them (except for one, but this one in particular wasn't always part of 5by5 and doesn't include Dan).
wxl··on Computers Without Borders is born \o/
I simply can't take any group seriously if they can't even get grammar right at all. If there are a few typos, that's one thing, but things like this:

> How a Society at the XXIth Century can be free without Free Software and Free Hardware?

Are just nonsense. I would even understand a few glaring grammar errors if it was at all possible to understand, this really isn't.

It's also hard to understand what they're trying to do. It seems something about spreading free soft-/hardware but what are they going to do to accomplish this?

EDIT: I just realized, the grammar mistakes make it look like they just typed it in whatever their native language is and piped it through Google Translate.

wxl··on [dead]
Getting Siri data and recording phone calls are totally different things. Siri using your data to improve itself isn't a big deal, in my opinion. That's because you're talking directly to a service, you shouldn't expect it to be totally private.

Phone calls are different, they're meant to be private.

wxl··on Cube: 3D home printer starts shipping in days
It actually does mention the price of the cartridges, in the store. $50 each, with discounts if you buy more than one.
wxl··on [dead]
I don't know about you, but I don't know of many hackers that are bodybuilders.
wxl··on [dead]
So, basically, don't let your kids play on your iPad for three hours straight. Sounds like common sense to me.
wxl··on Aviva Investors accidentally fires entire company via email
They actually said in the article that they were NOT fired. Horrible title choice.
wxl··on The War On RSS
This "RSS is dead" stuff is really getting old. I think we can safely say RSS is dead if Google ever decides to kill Google Reader.
wxl··on Light Table Is On Kickstarter
$200k seems like an awful lot to me. I don't see why you need a massive team to make an IDE. It's not like you're making a game, where you need artists, programmers, composers, etc. All this is is programming.
wxl··on Wanted: wysiwyg editor that produces markdown on the backend
Or, you know, you could just write in Markdown.
wxl··on Chronic Buckyball Administration Doubles Rat Lifespan
You're kidding, right?
wxl··on Coming soon: Flying car for $279k
Yeah, sure.

> Dietrich says, “a pilot of one of our vehicles—once issued a use permit—can just drive up, swipe through the gate, taxi, and take off. You don’t even have to talk to anyone.”

That's bull. You're gonna have to talk to someone. Whether you're at the smallest airport in the country or not, you're going to need to get on UNICOM and state your intentions otherwise you're either going to kill yourself or get a bunch of pilots pissed at you. And if you're at an airport of any size you have to talk to ground control so you don't get in a crash on the ground and then get clearance to take off so you don't get in a crash in the air.

wxl··on Learn to read a binary font by reading a story
In my opinion, it would make more sense to read braille by looking at it. However, it would be cool if this were some sort of alien language/hidden language in a video game or something.
