In my implementation, I render a cube and discard any pixels that aren't along a ray intersecting the sphere, while the rest are colored according to user settings and atom colors. The same approach is taken with the cylindrical bonds, except of course it's a ray-cylinder intersection instead.
My primary purpose for writing it was for the production of journal article figures.
Tracking rotation can be done pretty cheaply & with low latency these days, and I expect the Daydream viewer will probably handle it quite well.
Translation is quite a bit more challenging, and I'm not expecting much in that department for this iteration. The issue can be addressed to some degree with a neck model that maps rotation to translation, but it can't handle real translation, such as leaning or walking around.
This is on par with Oculus/Samsung's current mobile solution, the Gear VR headset.
So, how do we address this? Is there a "killer app" for the distributed web that will motivate people to move to it? Can we use existing web tech like Web-RTC to bootstrap the system? Maybe a workable avenue is mobile, where people are pretty comfortable installing new applications - what if we built the next social network into an app based on the distributed web?
I don't know the answer, but I'd love to hear any ideas/brainstorming you clever people have to offer.
I have no idea where this is coming from, but it's simply untrue. See [1] for a ton of examples of it being perfectly human read/writable.
All I can come up with is that people are looking at code compiled to asm.js, which is of course going to have all semantic meaning stripped from it, no different than code compiled to javascript.
Why would they also be a monopoly?
For now, the URL click is king, and it's hard to beat easy when you want people to use what you've made.

I see two advantages: 1) They get their name in the news (and in consumers minds), and 2) they get the bitcoin spenders that they may not have otherwise (an admittedly small bump at the moment, but a bump nonetheless and at virtually no cost).
