You would love this book: At Home by Bill Bryson (https://www.amazon.com/At-Home-Short-History-Private/dp/0767...)

It explores history through the lens of everyday objects in the home (even fixtures like windows, and spaces like your foyer)

A little slow to start, but then it never stops entertaining

wwsculley··on Show HN: I built a site to compare fees and rates for sending money abroad
What inspired you to build this site? Who is your target customer?

I ask because I love the idea of building a search engine for payments, given how fragmented and localized the money-transfer market is.

Also, I'm familiar with a few sites that are similar: https://www.monito.com/ https://www.fxcompared.com/ https://www.saveonsend.com/

I'm curious about what gap in these services you're hoping to fill.

wwsculley··on Ask HN: what's the best business you've ever seen?
Harvard University

The business has managed to create one of the strongest global brands after more than 350 years in its market, and is expected to produce the best quality product among its competitors without charging the highest prices.

wwsculley··on Ask HN: How do you stay (somewhat) healthy?
I know it might seem intimidating, but try some abbreviated Crossfit workouts (http://crossfit.com/) to get in shape quickly and then stay there.
wwsculley··on [dead]
I am a huge fan of Crossfit. I began several weeks ago, and cannot remember being in as good shape since my peak in college (I was on a top-3 Division 1 crew team).

Be sure to follow the site's advice (and brianm's), however, about starting slowly. It helps to scale back some of the workouts to even a fraction of the time/intensity, and only working 1 or 2 of the workout sets (it is normally 3 days on, 1 day off).

My advice: start small, build up, don't give up!

wwsculley··on Ask HN: Are we in trouble?
The economy lost an enormous chunk of itself. It will need to correct for this change - whether now or later. The world will have to call USA's debt some time.

My big question: will the rest of the world continue to use USA's economy and currency as the global economic focal point and medium? -or will it abandon them for alternatives?

wwsculley··on Ask HN: How would you identify potential relationships for businesses?
Thank you for the feedback, wallflower, and especially for the reading - I'll jump on these articles this weekend.
wwsculley··on Ask HN: How would you identify potential relationships for businesses?
I understand that the focus is/has been on the personal connections that people have. But my reservation about personal relationships alone is that the impetus to act on these relationships - to develop them into actual institutional connections - is inconsistent.

In the past few months alone, friends/connections have contacted me because they were looking for a job or a way to develop their business and <i>just happened<i> to see my employer on LinkedIn, or incidentally saw that I had a connection-by-degrees with someone at another company they wanted to reach.

These cases tell me that too many connections are purely incidental. I think an objective framework that could capture these potential connections.

That said, what are the typical objective elements of the business-relationship process that can be identified without the need of human proactive declaration of business needs/offerings? What sort of characteristics would you include in an 'institutional profile' that would help other businesses understand the potential for a mutually beneficial connection?

wwsculley··on Ask HN: How do I get to that next level of traffic?
I think the question you need to ask yourself before - How can I increase the net traffic to my site? - is: Why do I want to increase traffic?

Building out a customer base for the sake of increasing numbers leaves too many open questions. Building one for a specific purpose, however, (e.g. increase ad revenue, subscriptions, user-relationships) can help shape the direction of the site's development. It is much easier to increase the volume and stickiness of your audience if you can give them a purpose to look forward to.

That said, the nature of your product should dictate this direction. If you are selling a specific product, consider what modifications and accessories will complement the original product, and to what extent that will draw back loyal users.

Why should I buy an iPod? Because I am confident that I will enjoy engaging with it, look forward to the next model, and that I will be able to relate with my friends about it (consequently encouraging friends without one to get one). Engagement is more important than ownership.

In terms of social music networking, consider what ways that you can allow your users to engage with one another through the product, and to give them some agency over the process.
