wwkeyboard··on How To Become An Apprentice Developer
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survivorship_bias

How many people didn't get accepted something like App Academy? One problem with self-taught education is the lack of metrics; it's hard to tell if teach-yourself is a viable path for everyone, or just a small percentage.

wwkeyboard··on Building a Riak Cluster on Raspberry Pi
"I thought it might be fun to create a Riak cluster on a set of Pis I had lying around... Note that cluster isn’t fit for any purpose in its current form."

RTFA

wwkeyboard··on UsesThis: Rob Pike
Maybe we can ask him what its like to be coding at 50?

For a serious question, does acme lend itself to a chording keyboard? It seems like this is taking another step towards Engelbert's vision in the mother of all demos.

wwkeyboard··on Google Glasses Make Their Questionable Debut at (New York Fashion Week)
The start up community tends to operate in a bubble. Wearing something that makes you stand out as 'uncool' and a target for theft is enough to deter people from a product. Take the white ipod ear buds, they were 'cool' enough that most people would were them, however bluetooth handsfree headsets only took off with specific demographics.
wwkeyboard··on Tray.io - powerful email assistant
I'm I the only person who is reluctant to add a service hosted by a startup to your email process? What kind of plans do you have for when they close/exit/pivot/whatever were calling it these days? How is this not going to be another Sparrow or Fluent?
wwkeyboard··on Privilege escalation vulnerability on 64-bit Intel CPU hardware
I believe they use Xen. (and so thinks wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_Web_Services)
wwkeyboard··on RoboPizza Lands Stateside
I'll be excited if it also serves Earl Grey, hot.
wwkeyboard··on /dev/zero has infinite electrons and /dev/null has an infinite appetite for them
This reminds me of a problem we used to debate in college; on a perfectly efficient machine, would `cat /dev/random > /dev/null` violate the second law of thermodynamics?
wwkeyboard··on Why do self-respecting hackers use Gmail & Co?
I do something very similar for my calendar, but it's kept in markdown and instead of deleting the done items I move them under a heading for the date completed(along with any notes about the item). While I'm not required to submit a timesheet for my employment, I find it nice to have a log of my actions.

The contacts file sounds interesting, I'll give that a try.

wwkeyboard··on I'll tell you why movie revenue is dropping...
TXJS was at the Drafthouse last year. Best conference venue ever.
wwkeyboard··on A Big List of Interesting Programming Books Released in 2011
Exactly, that is the 4th item on the list.
wwkeyboard··on A Big List of Interesting Programming Books Released in 2011
It would be nice to filter out the reprints, we all know about The Art of Computer Programing. Having that second on your list of "Books Released in 2011" kind of kills the article's credibility.
wwkeyboard··on The single most useful Emacs feature
I've had success with http://jumpcut.sourceforge.net/ before. I just have been using emacs for almost everything so have not tried this with Lion.
wwkeyboard··on The Mature Programmer
And yet again a 10 year old article[1] from Spolsky captures most of the rants in both the post and the comments. What works for a game developer does not necessarily work for an internal cooperate developer.

wwkeyboard··on Mac Text Editors and Navigation
Another far under-appreciated feature of Textmate(and emacs, probably vi as well) is incremental search. Ctrl-s and start typing what you are looking for, if you want to find the next item hit Ctrl-s again. I use this whenever I'm traveling more than 5-6 lines in either direction.
wwkeyboard··on John Gruber Has Some Career Advice For Developers
Didn't Activision(the publisher of Modern Warfare 3) get its start developing only for the Atari 2600?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Activision#History_of_Activisio...

wwkeyboard··on Body hacking trick: cooling the hands for better performance
I wonder if the use of running as a stressor effected that study? The original article caused heat in the core and upper body(squats and pullups) while short sprints is more of a leg issue.
wwkeyboard··on 'Super clone' sniffer dogs: Coming to an airport near you?
Detection dogs are not trained for obedience, the goal is to have them focus on exploring & finding and not setting quietly. The idea is to have them only give the desired response(in that case sit and point), when they detect a substance they have been trained to detect.
wwkeyboard··on The stock market hates HP's new strategy
Dose the stock market reflect real investors(by 'real' I mean people looking at where the company will be in a few years and planning to hold an investment for that length of time)? I wonder how much of this is an institution selling enough shares to change a metric and trigger a bunch of algorithms.
wwkeyboard··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (August 2011)
And we need Ruby developers in Austin and San Antonio. I'll be at LSRC if anyone wants to talk more about what our team does. ( http://rackertalent.com/)
wwkeyboard··on Twitter: From Ruby on Rails to the JVM [video]
It all depends on the problem. Dynamic languages like Ruby and Python are good for rapid development, but not for high volume, soft realtime problems like Twitter has. Just make sure to match your tools to you problems and try and oddly hack a solution with a tool that is not best for the job.
wwkeyboard··on The campaign to terrify you about EMP
I find it funny that all of the end-of-technology-as-we-know-it criers never talk about bicycling and local farming.
wwkeyboard··on How the Air Conditioner Made Modern America
The problem for most of us in the US is that we can't control how much they refrigerate moste public places. We keep our home ~80F(it makes going outside in south Texas much more comfortable), but that makes my office very uncomfortable at 74F.
wwkeyboard··on What’s Up With All These Changes in Rails?
I think part of this problem comes from the number of blog posts that don't reference versions when explaining something. This adds to confusion if the topic has changed and the post is not updated/marked out of date.
wwkeyboard··on When Will I Use Math?
Have you tried with the upcoming robotics companies? iRobot, Foster-Miller, and Boston Dynamics tend to be outside of the startup bubble but might be more receptive to someone with a background in control theory. My biggest problem when I tried to move in robotics was my lack of a math background.
wwkeyboard··on Google App Engine for Go
Nice of them to even mark the issue fixed!

http://code.google.com/p/googleappengine/issues/detail?id=23...

wwkeyboard··on Once Again, Twitter Drops Ruby for Java
It's not just the quantity of queries, it's what the application does. Twitter needs to do specific things very quickly(in this case answer search queries). You could look at a more general high-traffic site(like Facebook) to find a different approach(highly optimized php compiler). I don't think looking to such a large team on such a large project for a role model is beneficial to small teams, they have different considerations and abilities.
wwkeyboard··on IKEA's delayed gratification results in 60% impulse buying
It seems like thats what the catalog is for. The purpose of showrooms is usually to show things.
wwkeyboard··on Whatever happened to Quora?
I wonder how much of the new-user experience is to avoid an eternal september? Allowing people to easily sounds off on a few things and leave(like I'm doing right now) is not conducive to building a community.
wwkeyboard··on Ask HN: Textmate Alternatives?
Try an IDE designed specifically for whatever language you're working in. Most will have key commands to do just about anything you can do with Textmate. Spend a little time trying to customize and learn the environment. This will give you a good experience to weigh a lightweight editor against a heavyweight IDE. Most people seem to just fire up Eclipse or Rubymine or whatever else, see it take 30 seconds to start, not bother to learn what sets it apart from a text editor, then swear them off because of bloat.
