wwkeyboard··on Ask HN: Hobbies/Skills which can be picked in 30s and compete at world level?
The way radio contesting requires you to collaborate with your competitors is fascinating to me. Both stations my struggle to pull their competitor out of the noise because you both get points or a new multiple for doing so. Then there is no out of band way to verify logs, they just have to line up with what's in your competitor's logs.

And if you dig around the rules there are _lots_ of awards. e.g. I was the highest scoring QRP station in the Illinois QSO Party a few years ago.

wwkeyboard··on Ask HN: Hobbies/Skills which can be picked in 30s and compete at world level?
Gentalman Racer is generally open to anyone with tons of money to blow(Ken Block founded DC shoes along with being a successful athlete before moving into motorsports). DHH is a sports car racer, including driving at Le Mans a few times.

"a few grand" won't get you into world class motorsports, but if you also have the space for a garage, trailer, and tow vehicle it is enough to be competitive at the club level. SCCA, NASA, PCA, and BMWCCA have club races all over the US.

wwkeyboard··on Nikon to stop making SLR cameras and focus on mirrorless models?
Fuji's JPEG colors are great, and if you're willing to spend the time to get it right in the camera they are sufficient for personal work. Especially if your personal interests are being out shooting instead of sitting behind a computer editing.
wwkeyboard··on An intellectual starter kit
The idea that a dude with an AR will take on a platoon of MRAPs is comical. The founding fathers were talking about the ability to raise a well regulated militia when there was no standing army, not kids shooting a schools.
wwkeyboard··on Nikon Z9 Disassembly and Teardown
> always wonder when they put it back together if it still worked

Kolari's whole business model involves disassembling cameras to change the filters on the sensors, so I suspect they know what they are doing.

wwkeyboard··on Comparing Graviton (ARM) Performance to Intel and AMD for MySQL
From the 2nd paragraph of the link I posted:

One of the major differences between AWS Graviton2 instance types and other instance types is their vCPU to physical processor core mapping. Every vCPU on a Graviton2 processor is a physical core. This means there is no Simultaneous Multi-Threading (SMT) and more isolation between vCPUs. By contrast, every vCPU on a 5th generation instance type with Intel processor (such as M5, C5, and R5) is a hyper-thread. This means vCPUs share resources and there is less isolation than in the case of Graviton2.
wwkeyboard··on Comparing Graviton (ARM) Performance to Intel and AMD for MySQL
Amazon is pretty clear that Gravatron is an actual core, while the others are hyper-threads[1]. It makes sense that at higher vcpu counts you're likely to run into contention with neighbors, or even yourself.

It starts with an introduction to electric dirt bikes before getting into the fatal financial shenanigans.
wwkeyboard··on Ask HN: How do I get over constant failure?
If you're feeling this pain your colleagues are as well. Small improvements in this area are yeoman's work that's often appreciated by peers, if not management. When I've been in a rut making baby steps in tooling has helped get me moving again.
wwkeyboard··on How did LastPass master passwords get compromised?
They claim to have 30,000,000 users but we've only seen a handful of reports about this, why such a small percentage? Wouldn't someone with a full list of passwords want to exfiltrate as much data as possible before it became obvious they had the creds?

wwkeyboard··on We built a new GPS receiver engine
I thought SA was removed because we discovered ways around it. Specifically differential GPS(tl;dr is that if you have a known point on the ground you can take a measurement there and get the SA offset, this is widely used to compensate for atmospheric error in GPS).
wwkeyboard··on Ask HN: Best robust laptop for everyday software development
If travel is your worry a more protective backpack or hard shell case might serve you well. Every "rugged" laptop I've seen is under-specd and over priced.
wwkeyboard··on CPAP: Back-up power and battery systems for travel
I have a Bioenno Power battery for portable ham radio usage and have had zero problems with it. The capacity is smaller than a CPAP would need but they have plenty of big options.
wwkeyboard··on Ask HN: What up and coming technology has you most excited?
Anyone interested in the psychology of why nearly-but-not-quite humanoid machines are creepy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncanny_valley is a good place to start reading.
wwkeyboard··on Ham radio operators are saving Puerto Rico (2017)
If you are in anyway maker-inclined there are a bunch of QRP kits that are not expensive. You won't be immediately spending all evening rag chewing with the old farts on your local repeater, but to take a bag of semiconductors and turn it into a radio that can actually talk with other people is amazing!
wwkeyboard··on Ham radio operators are saving Puerto Rico (2017)
Thirded, I used hamstudy to pass all of the tests and after a few years on the air I finally know enough to understand the ARRL manuals. I'm reading the extra manual and it's pretty incredible, they walk you through the theory of building a transceiver starting at doping silicone to make semiconductors.

wwkeyboard··on Keeping a Lab Notebook [pdf]
Recently I've tried something similar, using paper notes as a temporary store and every few days rewriting into my wiki and agenda. The process is similar to a GTD inbox that gets processed regularly. Lots of the TODO items can be handled while rewriting(e.g. email Casey about the widgets).

wwkeyboard··on America has become too anti-innovation
> if you and about 20 hotshot engineers could clone the product in a year, then it's not innovation

I think this statement runs against the argument these OP is trying to make. It's the massive number of failures that occur on the way to finding the innovation that important but don't show up when duplicating the end product. It's not hard to make a lightbulb if you have a good vacuum pump and know what filament to use, but trying thousands of different metals while inventing new vacuum techniques is expensive and hard.

(I appreciate your core argument, I just think this particular statement runs against it)

wwkeyboard··on Ask HN: If the bots take your job, what would you do?
> jobs are being automated faster than most people can retrain

For the section of the US between the Hudson river and the SF bay this has been the case for ~20 years. What most 30 year old laid off workers MAY do is very different from what they CAN do. Saying "ohh, just learn to code" isn't helpful to someone worried about making rent this month let alone paying their internet bill.

wwkeyboard··on Scott Kelly's DNA shows unexpected telomere lengthening after year in space
I think this could be solved by having the [dupe] tag link back to the original. I've seen a few posts marked as dupe and it's sometimes difficult to trace down the original.
wwkeyboard··on Ask HN: What is your experience switching away from QWERTY keyboard?
And every time there is a test form filled with "aoeuaoeuaoeu" someone says "hey hey I know who did that!"

Although I'w surprised how quickly I can type 'qwerty' with this keyboard.

wwkeyboard··on Ask HN: What is your experience switching away from QWERTY keyboard?
The biggest problem with MacOS is that some of the modifiers don't respect the keyboard for some java gui toolkit. I've only seen this problem come up with intellij products. And it's only with the non-alphanumeric keys. So things like command-bracket gives a different keystroke than you would expect. It's an up-stream problem that JetBrains has said they don't have control over.

wwkeyboard··on Ask HN: What is your experience switching away from QWERTY keyboard?
Once people know you don't type QWERTY they won't shut up about it. Every time there is an HN post about colemak or dvorak you'll get the same stream of jokes and references to 20 year old reason articles. Some people seem to think the only reason to switch is that you are secretly a keyboard evangelical, and treat you as such. It's pretty annoying.

My only metric for Dvorak's effectiveness is that my wrists used to hurt when I argued with people on IRC. I switched to Dvorak and my wrists got better, then I stopped arguing with people on IRC and my life got better. ymmv

wwkeyboard··on How Space Weather Could Trigger a Future Economic Crisis
> It would cause parts of the world to lose their power grids

The questions I haven't seen answered are: how much of our capacity to manufacture power generation and transmission equipment requires a functioning power grid? I wonder if we(read FEMA) have a plan to divert the finite resources remaining after such an event to repairing the power grid?

wwkeyboard··on At Davos, IBM Chief Predicts Artificial Intelligence Won’t Be a Job Killer
The same can be said for the real estate used by banks. I guess they are used for meeting to sign paperwork and as support centers for people not comfortable banking online. In the future I don't see that need requiring a large building.
wwkeyboard··on Mark Zuckerberg 2017 Challenge
My personal challenge is to contact someone in every state with ham radio. It's far more energy efficient, and within my budget.
