wushupork··on What happens to a tiny town when Walmart disappears
In the SF Bay area, lots of people regularly trek from South Bay to work in SF - often between 60+ - 30 miles each way. Whenever I need to go into the city, it's 55miles each way. Fortunately I don't have to do it daily but it sucks when I do as its almost always rushhour.
wushupork··on GitHub is apparently in crisis again
You can't have it both ways. If you raise money from VCs, their expectation is to have a huge return. Things that have worked when you are a small startup will not work when you get bigger in order to grow enterprise revenues. If those people really wanted it to be "the way it was" then raising money goes counter to that.
wushupork··on Why Are So Many Zappos Employees Leaving?
I have to disagree here. Much waste is created by founder developers precisely because they can code, but they are not necessarily creating value ( I'm just as guilty ). Good managers / the business, call it whatever you will figure out the priorities, the desires of the stakeholders, help prioritize and more. Any producer (not just a developer) left to their own devices builds what they want to build, and that's not necessarily valuable to the customers or the business. So I agree with your second part, but not the first.

The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg - probably need to deeply absorb this - a lot of good stuff

Copy This! By Paul Orfalea - another good "small business" entrepreneur book

The E-Myth Revisited By Michael Gerber - 2nd time read. Got more out of it this time.

The People's Tycoon (Ford) by Steven Watts - I love reading about businessmen from this age

Scrum by JJ Sutherland Jeff Sutherland - good read for development teams

wushupork··on Show HN: Mesmo – How to double your next business trip experience
Love the idea. I usually hit LinkedIn and Facebook to check out who I know around the area before I go there and try to message them.
wushupork··on Thumbtack Raises $125M at a $1.3B Valuation
I had a similar experience. Posted a profile, get lots of requests, spend money on credits to reply and nada.
wushupork··on Ask HN: I'm owed 8k by a startup that's going under. What do I do?
Tell me more about this all-in insurance. Where would you find these types of insurance companies. I run a small digital studio and run into similar problems from time to time with startups - it's always startups.
wushupork··on Show HN: My bootstrapped sideproject app, Movie Trailers and Showtimes
There's already some monetization opportunities in the app - iTunes affiliate. Video ads, etc.

We also have potential partnership opportunities and other revshare opportunities coming.

wushupork··on Show HN: My bootstrapped sideproject app, Movie Trailers and Showtimes
Not blunt at all. Probably not until there's huge traction.
wushupork··on Show HN: My bootstrapped sideproject app, Movie Trailers and Showtimes
Yes, eventually. So much to do. That's probably next.
wushupork··on Show HN: Beautiful movie app for movie info, trailers, showtimes
Monetizing? what's that? Currently nothing super innovative. affiliate and ads
wushupork··on Show HN: Beautiful movie app for movie info, trailers, showtimes
Yes I did most of the design myself. A lot of thought went into "engagement loops" as I call them.
wushupork··on Show HN: Beautiful movie app for movie info, trailers, showtimes
Hi David, yes - that's a VERY common use case that is in our TODO list
wushupork··on Show HN: Beautiful movie app for movie info, trailers, showtimes
Currently scraping for now, but we're going to move away from that.
wushupork··on Show HN: Beautiful movie app for movie info, trailers, showtimes
Of course I have :) I used to use a combination of Trailers, Flixster, IMDB, and Fandango for my movie needs. This is sort of an amalgamation of all that with my twist.
wushupork··on Show HN: Beautiful movie app for movie info, trailers, showtimes
Thanks for the vote of confidence Peter. I appreciate it!
wushupork··on Show HN: Beautiful movie app for movie info, trailers, showtimes
Thanks - hopefully it's also simple and easy to use

We're not pulling RT data yet so I haven't really looked.
wushupork··on Show HN: Beautiful movie app for movie info, trailers, showtimes
You can surf trailers right now - there's a whole trailers section. Notifications are coming in the next version - with the use cases you mentioned (when the movie is out in theaters or available on itunes etc)
wushupork··on Show HN: Beautiful movie app for movie info, trailers, showtimes
Mostly TMDB but we also pull showtime data from another source. We're looking at augmenting our ratings data from other providers eg Rotten Tomatoes or IMDB
wushupork··on Show HN: Beautiful movie app for movie info, trailers, showtimes
It's 100% native - objective-c. No Swift yet since it's too new and I like to see examples of what's out there and existing codebase. It's mostly a UI for someone else's API so the backend is very lightweight. We use Parse and a caching server, but that's about it.

You are the second person to point that out. I really should change that but I guess it's in reference to this? http://rs1img.memecdn.com/keanu-reeves-is-immortal_o_676589....
wushupork··on Show HN: Beautiful movie app for movie info, trailers, showtimes
Founder of the app here. Ever since Yahoo Weather came out, it's displaced my default weather app. I really liked it's intuitive and easy to use interface. That's what I was trying to go for here. Hope you guys like it.
wushupork··on Ask HN: Founders whose startups have failed, where did life take you afterwards?
What was the idea you published out of curiosity?
wushupork··on Ask HN: Founders whose startups have failed, where did life take you afterwards?
Congrats on coming out of failure. I would love to learn more about what worked and what didn't work. What sort of pitfalls you had, lessons learned, etc
wushupork··on Ask HN: Founders whose startups failed, what happens to VC/angel relationships?
Thanks for sharing your story and being candid about it. You only hear of the uber success in the news and everybody feels good. But the reality is most VC funded companies fail or under perform expectations and the few winners hit homerun and make up for everyone else.
wushupork··on Firebase is Joining Google
Congrats James - I've been watching your journey since Envolve. We were one of the first hundred users to join Firebase (ID:68) and I remember how easy it took to add real time notifications to one of my product (5 hrs I believe). Your team's success is well deserved.
wushupork··on Flappy Bird by the Numbers
This is especially true in a third world country with perhaps a modest level of corruption. Everyone will want a piece of you whether or not you wanted it. Personal safety and the safety of your family all of a sudden become a major concern.
wushupork··on Ask HN: Please tell us how you started a project in PHP and are sorry for this.
I'd love to hear Mark Zuckerberg reply to this.
