wufocaculura··on Free95: An open-source Windows-compatible operating system
With ReactOS being around and given such a small target audience I don't expect this will go far.

To be honest I wonder if this ends up being part of some CTF challenge

wufocaculura··on Palo Alto Networks PAN-OS Zero-Day Exploitation
From official advisory at https://security.paloaltonetworks.com/CVE-2024-3400, I smiled to that one:

"If you are unable to apply the Threat Prevention based mitigation at this time, you can still mitigate the impact of this vulnerability by temporarily disabling device telemetry"

wufocaculura··on Timeline of the xz open source attack
There's a single dot in a line between #include <sys/prcntl.h> and void my_sandbox(void). It is easy to miss, but makes the compile to fail, thus resulting in HAVE_LINUX_LANDLOCK to be never enabled.
wufocaculura··on Plain Text Email
There are probably cases where plain text email is enough (linux kernel development seems to be doing fine), but once you enter corporate world HTML and all its goodies bring a lot of benefits.

(HTML) "Please have a look at this table (table pasted inline to email) and compare the results with previous run (another table inline)"

(plain text) "Please have a look at attached table (table1.xlsx) and compare the results with previous run (table2.xlsx)"

Sure, both bring the same information but the former gives you all the information immediately.

Dedicated devops/sysadmin looking for a full/part time project where I could help you and your team deliver your project on time.

wufocaculura··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (March 2024)

  Location: Poland
  Remote: Strongly preferred
  Willing to relocate: Yes
Technologies: PHP, JavaScript, C#, SQL, Python, Shell scripting, Docker, Kubernetes
  Email: 1cgh5iyqr@mozmail.com
I am a self taught programmer that turned into devops/sysadmin, but never fully took programmer hat off - I am still maintaining few commercial projects I developed over past few years.

As a sysadmin I was hired for various projects, most recently I was a de-facto co-lead of a group of 7 admins - our job was to maintain (with on-call duties) fleet of applications spread over 300 servers making sure it works, troubleshooting and reporting to management when it didn't. The technology stack was a mix of old and new - HP-UX, Solaris, Linux, Windows, Docker, Kubernetes, Weblogic, Wildfly, Tomcat, Java, Python, Shell scripting.

Looking for a job where I could wear my both programmer and sysadmin hats.

wufocaculura··on Quickemu: Quickly run optimised Windows, macOS and Linux virtual machines
this is what we are really missing, something like: "here are 'good enough' cmd line args that you can use to boot $OS with qemu". Quickemu seems to try to help here.
wufocaculura··on Bram Moolenaar has died
That's a sad news for the Vim community. Given that development was basically focused around Bram, it makes me wonder, what will happen with Vim now?

WIll someone step up and continue to develop Vim, or it will fade away and Neovim take its place?

wufocaculura··on BlueJ – A Lightweight Java IDE
I used bluej for a while - it was fine as your first IDE as it does not have tons of bells and whistle that overwhelms you. Obviously, as time passes and your skills improve, you will look for better tools. But BlueJ does its job.

I sailed away from java world, which IDEs are being used now? IntelliJ, Netbeans, Eclipse?

wufocaculura··on A pair of Linux kernel modules using Rust
Highly recommend.

Just to show support for corbet and his team. He could keep the articles paywalled forever, but is making them free after a week. Becoming a paying member is our way to say thank you for his fair attitude (and keeping ads at minimum level).

I work at totaly different field in IT, most articles are just "wow, that's interesting" for me and - I still keep LWN's subscriptionm and it is the only one I have.

wufocaculura··on Thunderbird 102
So happy that thunderbird is still alive :)

I like the new UI - seems a bit more compact than previous one - a nice chnage comparing to useless space wasted in most of the apps we have today.

Hope they will focus on editor in the upcoming versions - if only they could make html tables as good as they are in Outlook...

wufocaculura··on Thunderbird’s New Home (2020)
Seems like postbox is more Apple focused. Used it for a while but couldn't find any feature that would convince me to switch.
wufocaculura··on Thunderbird’s New Home (2020)
My setup is probably a bit unusual, as I use four desktop apps and webmail

1) work emails (we use self hosted zimbra) - combination of zimbra desktop + outlook. I use outlook for usual email job - I do a lot of email exchange with corpos and Outlook is best when it comes to table support in emails (copy-paste to/from Excel). When I need to search for an email or clean up my inbox (not everything can be filtered with rules) I usually swtich to Zimbra desktop (unfortunately abandoned project) for its very compact UI (I hate a lot of spacing in modern apps), very fast searching and some UI features like "mark email", press "M" for a "move emails to folder" window with search field. If only zimbra desktop had decent table support, it would be ideal for me.

2) private emails - Thunderbird. With some plugins (currently use three: "Manually sort folders", "quick folders move" and "quick folders") I can achieve Zimbra's "move emails to folder" experience. Searching is good, but thunderbird lacks good table support so a "no-go" for me when it comes to work emails.

3) mutt - from time to time - pure nostalgia, I send maybe 5 emails / month here...

3) webmails (zimbra's web interface and roundcube) when in need and without access to my laptop/pc.

wufocaculura··on Lepton – Firefox UI Fix
I keep it on as well - just hope that they can see that after 89.0 was releases there was an increase (not big, but still) in changes to default look'n'feel and make some conclusions :)
wufocaculura··on Lepton – Firefox UI Fix
true, but that works only with one app, as I see in this thread there is a group of users (likely - very small) that would like to see it in other apps / part of the system.
wufocaculura··on Lepton – Firefox UI Fix
that's valid reason, didn't think of that as I got used to moving windows with win+cursor keys
wufocaculura··on Lepton – Firefox UI Fix
>> most people use touchscreens (phones / tablets)

> ...running Windows? I doubt that.

of course not, windows 10 mobile is already dead. I am talking about general trend - a lot of people are fine with just smartphone and/or tablet and do not really need to use windows pc/laptop

[edit: formatting]

wufocaculura··on Lepton – Firefox UI Fix
I especially liked the reduced padding part here.

I really hate the trend of increasing padding in various apps / websites. One of the first things I usually do is search for "how do I make more condensed view here".

I am probably in minority here - most people use touchscreens (phones / tablets) but there is still a group of people who have bigger screens and would love to see more data than empty space.

wufocaculura··on Bitwarden_rs: Unofficial Bitwarden compatible server written in Rust
anyone moved from Keepass(XC) to bitwarden?

I do see advantage of being cloud based as a way to avoid database conflicts (in my case 3 windows machines + mobile), but I wonder what can surprise me here. Is bitwarden's browser integration similar to KeepassXC (Keepass helper + KeepasXC-browser)?

wufocaculura··on Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project?
We live about about 30km outside of our capital city. It's a village, but you can see it slowly transforimg into a small town. Wife got crazy about growing own vegetables, so I've been busy assembling garden crates for her.

We also decided to farm chickens (for eggs), so we bought a havel - another couple of hours spent on assembling. As we never did this before, we are grokking the web looking for something you would call "chicken farming for dummies".

wufocaculura··on How to Make a Raspberry Pi VPN Server
I agree that setting up OpenVPN for the first time might be quite messy, so such script can be useful - it is quite simple and lets you do standard setup.

What I am wondering - it is using a pregenerated dh param file (I can understsand why - to make the initial process faster). I am not much into crypto, with all the other elements being created during the setup process, how big no-no is having a predefined dh file?

wufocaculura··on CalVer: Calendar Versioning
No strong opinion here, but I see calver as a good fit for a new / rapidly changing project (with yyyymmdd being a both version and snapshot date), or for a software where you don't need semver guarantees about api change - so not for a library or for some important tool that is often scripted.

Or, as described in the project, calver might be good as a release date for a "umbrella projects" - like Ubuntu, or even Windows 10 builds.

wufocaculura··on KeePassXC 2.5.2
Thanks, will have a look at this.
wufocaculura··on KeePassXC 2.5.2
Looking for some advice here. I am generally happy with KeePassXC (switching from browser-remembered passwords was a big step forward for me), but I have a feeling that it might not be a perfect solution for me.

I have four devices that are being used on almost-daily basis: - work PC - home PC, - laptop, - smartphone

work and home PCs are often on at the same time leading to a situation where I have KeePassXC database open - it happens I just leave home/work without closing / locking the database (or it prompts database modified - save?) which might lead to some desync scenarios (it already happened to me).

So I think I need something that will not keep local database as KeePassXC does, but will use online store. I am not a big cloud fan, so would prefer to host in on my own infra.

My requirements: - self-hosted - online (some API-based), - cross-platform (at least Windows/Android but with Linux in mind) - browser-aware completion (similar to KeePassXC) - Firefox + maybe chrome,

Is bitwarden a way to go? Or is there something better?

wufocaculura··on Show HN: Self-Validating Email Aliases for Postfix
I do a variant of this, login+company@domain.com (or more often login-company@domain.com as + is often rejected at html forms).

In my experience, catch-all email (*@domain.com) increased number of spam as spambots send out emails to randomly generated adresses (john@domain.com, stephen@domain.com, anne@domain.com).

wufocaculura··on Using Certbot to automate the creation of certificates for OpenVPN
Sure - besides this small litle issue the article is great. I just noticed this as I few days ago I was wondering if I can use Lets Encrypt cert for OpenVPN
wufocaculura··on Using Certbot to automate the creation of certificates for OpenVPN
The title is a bit misleading.

This article is about installing LE certificate in OpenVPN Access Server (https://openvpn.net/index.php/access-server/overview.html) not in the OpenVPN server itself (which I think you can't do).
