wu_187··on Ask HN: MacBooks seems to be the only viable option these days
Why should you need insurance on something that should be covered under the manufacturer warranty?
wu_187··on The worst part of working from home is now haunting reopened offices
Almost all jobs have gotten rid of sick days and have you use PTO. The US labor laws suck.
wu_187··on Polar Express – How Airlines are plotting a new-route to Asia
My FIL is coming here soon and Qatar airlines DOH->IAH leg flies right over Ukraine normally https://flightaware.com/live/flight/id/QTR713-1647752880-sch... . The recent flights show they have adjusted to fly just west, but that's too close for comfort for me.
wu_187··on Polar Express – How Airlines are plotting a new-route to Asia
So I am in this situation right now. My Father in law is flying here (Houston) from the Philippines, and one of the cheapest flights is with Qatar, which connects in Doha. The Doha to IAH flight happens to fly directly over Ukraine, however looking at flightaware, recent flights have been adjusted to fly just west of the Ukraine border.
wu_187··on AWS adds an extra 5.5M IPv4 addresses
This. I honestly think the FCC will have to mandate it's adoption and give a hard date for the termination of IPv4 for it to work. Both will need to occur.
wu_187··on AWS adds an extra 5.5M IPv4 addresses
Both AT&T and Comcast do this with IPv4 as well.
wu_187··on AWS adds an extra 5.5M IPv4 addresses
I've worked in the cloud hosting industry for a decade and a half. The entire time, we were warned about the IPv4 shortage and how we needed to switch to IPv6 soon(tm). Well, things haven't changed. Everyone is dragging their feet on IPv6 adoption from hosting providers, ISPs, hardware manufacturers, and software developers. I predicted this years ago and always said that it would require a government mandate to move on from IPv4. I honestly believe we are going to ramp up NAT in the coming years before really doing away with IPv4.
wu_187··on Launch HN: InstaKin (YC S21) - Help immigrants to manage tasks in home countries
It's way cheaper to retire back in the home country after you've made your money in the states. A side benefit is that you can rent out the property before retirement which nets you a small income and keeps the property maintained. My in-laws own about a dozen properties in the Philippines, half of which they rent out, and a couple are being used by their kids. Collectively they make enough from the rentals to get by.
wu_187··on Cities try to phase out gas stoves but cooks are pushing back
I have a different perspective. Having gas during freeze in Houston allowed us to boil water while the power is out. It not only allowed us to have warm water for taking a bath it also allowed us to boil the water to make it potable as the water was unsafe to drink during that time. Had we not had gas it would have been much worse for us.
wu_187··on Sega sued for ‘rigged’ arcade machine
The lawsuit is not rediculous. These are marketed as being games of skill, which means there's always the ability to win on every turn. This is obviously false and people lose tons of money on this thinking it's fair.
wu_187··on Cloudproxy – hide your scrapers IP behind the cloud
Exactly. We'd get customers thats sites would drown in bot traffic because they pulled the same shit, changing user agents, different ips, etc. I had to build custom mod security rules to block the patterns these boys would pull. What's funny is that the bots would have a site where you could control the crawl rates but it's just a placebo. They would crawl even if you requested them to stop.

The issue with bots hosted on AWS or any cloud for that matter is that as a web host you can't just block the IPs because legitimate traffic comes from them in the form of CMS plugins, backups, etc.

wu_187··on Johnny Knoxville’s Last Rodeo
What got me into it was it's similarity with Beavis and Butt-Head talking during the music videos.
wu_187··on Apple commits $430B in US investments over five years
They need to pay their taxes
wu_187··on Mac Chimes of Death
I forget which mac's we had in high school, but ours would always crash in CAD class with a loud "quack". They crashed so much we would all mock the sound throughout class.
wu_187··on AMD and Xilinx Stockholders Overwhelmingly Approve AMD’s Acquisition of Xilinx
amd64 isn't going away any time soon. Intel is still the largest player here. If I were Intel right now, I'd be trying to come up with the next iteration of x86, probably 256 bit.
wu_187··on AMD and Xilinx Stockholders Overwhelmingly Approve AMD’s Acquisition of Xilinx
APUs have come a long way since the initial ones. AMDs own are now actually decent in 1080p gaming. I built my wife a gaming pc and didn't buy a dedicated gpu, just an AMD APU and can play CS GO maxed out at decent fps.
wu_187··on Google is accelerating reopening of offices and putting limits on remote work
it's true though. They are a publicly traded company with over 100B in office assets. If they can't get people back into the offices, they would not be able to justify they cost of keeping said property and would have to sell it to appease investors. Please use a brain cell next time.
wu_187··on Google is accelerating reopening of offices and putting limits on remote work
Sadly that culture changed long ago. Even prior to covid a lot of companies were downscaling their perks as they offshored jobs to Asia, thanks to our previous administration.
wu_187··on Google is accelerating reopening of offices and putting limits on remote work
This is why we need unions. Do employees get to sue Alphabet if they get covid from the office?
wu_187··on Google is accelerating reopening of offices and putting limits on remote work
What nobody is saying is that covid is not going away. This is highly irresponsible of Google given they have all the research in the world showing that. They already have the ideal situation set up to mitigate the risk of getting and spreading it. The vaccines aren't and never claimed to be 100% effective against covid, and as new variants have emerged, it's looking more like covid is going to be the next annual flu, except with all of the worst symptoms of covid, which can include death.

Our administration needs to pass legislation to prevent companies from forcing people back into offices. This is rediculous.

wu_187··on Google is accelerating reopening of offices and putting limits on remote work
This is the true answer. A lot of people have moved into far away (cheaper) bedroom communities to save money.

Also Google themselves would have a huge issue justifying their own real estate if people aren't in it "post covid". They are a publicly traded company so they would be forced to sell it off to appease investors.

All in all I think Google has shown it's true colors here. They don't have a damn about their employees. This reeks of boomer micromanaging 101.

I think that to fight this stockholders should push Alphabet to sell of their properties now. Should do the same with Amazon as well.

wu_187··on Amazon Just Cut Off Warehouse Workers from a Companywide Directory
it's pretty clear what's going on when HR is involved with a technical issue. We should drop AWS and move to another provider. Hit them where it really hurts.
wu_187··on Nominet announces that four directors have been removed
All the new TLDs have what's called "premium" domains. These encompass the one word and short domain names, which they will sell for MUCH higher. When they are flagged as premium on the back end, most registrars do a piss poor job of advertising it as such to the customer and will even allow you to go as far as ordering it if it's available, just to refund it after because it's actually a premium domain and they don't properly support the registration of them directly.
wu_187··on Facebook Illegaly Scraped 1B Pictures from Instagram to Train Its A.I
I am fairly certain that Facebook owns any content you post on Instagram, so not illegal.
wu_187··on Dyson air purifier outperformed by cheap DIY box fan filter in Marketplace test
Ditto. They dry my hands much faster than the Dyson and I don't have to touch a germ infested surface.
wu_187··on Hacker increased chemical level at Oldsmar's city water system, sheriff says
You hit the nail on the head. Once (legally) viable, I guarantee a large portion of our public sector infrastructure maintenance will be outsourced to the lowest bidder in the guise of saving tax money. All without any due diligence as to the safety ramifications of said actions.
wu_187··on The computers rejecting job applications
I talked to a recruiter for a three letter company, and they told me that they actively search for keywords on people's resumes and the applications that most apply to the role. This would in fact be considered filtering. Now I don't know if the software they use (brassring) automatically "suggests" applicants (which would imply automated filtering) or not.
wu_187··on Gitlab Project Hit by Spambot
That won't work as the same bad actors typically dabble in CC fraud as well. They will typically already have thousands of CC numbers at their disposal.
wu_187··on Spamcop.net email blacklist domain expired making every IP blacklisted
I tried calling Cisco twice to report the issue, but got hung up on twice. oh well...
wu_187··on Life of a Netflix Partner Engineer – The case of the extra 40 ms
My guess is DRM. Less data in the buffer means if someone is trying to rip a stream they won't be able to speed up the process by dumping the buffer.
