wturner··on Management Killed the Elixir
This is a post I read on Reddit. I have no idea the accuracy of it.
wturner··on Learnable Programming (2012)
it looks like he is trying to take the kinesthetic intuition of an abacus and apply it to programming. Neat
wturner··on Essence: A desktop OS built from scratch, for control and simplicity
It's simple and clean looking now now, but with time and success, you will join the darkside.
wturner··on Tim Gurner apologises over call for more unemployment to fix worker attitudes
The take away should be for the working class to understand that the owner class is waging a perpetual war on them/us. Money and cultural assumptions are toolkits of social engineering. Workers realizing they have the power to mold society in their interests terrifies owners and we need to put the foot on the gas to move it forward in the direction of unions , democratization and worker owned production .
wturner··on A History of the Amen Break: From the Winstons to Futurama and Om Unit
I grew up during a time when funky drummer felt way more pervasive as a break
wturner··on What the First Amendment says – 4 basic principles of free speech in the U.S.
I remember Noam Chomsky being critical decades ago of the major news channels and saying that due to the nature of commercial TV, speech is restricted to soundbites making authentic analysis and criticism inherently difficult for the left. The response by most right wingers was "Those are private companies they can do what they want".

When social media companies put the clamp down on some of these violence peddling wing nuts like Alex Jones, all the right wingers said their freedom of speech was "violated". All the previous talk saying "They're public companies they can do what they want" went right out the window on the right.

Elon Musk is a walking one man government contract. Him buying Twitter should demonstrate that free market ideology is a farce and always has been. The intertwine of Government and big business should become more crystalized when a billionaire buys "the public square". Instead, the opposite has happened and right wingers and libertarians double down on their ideology while hyping up a phony sensationalist narrative that Elon is really exposing corruption!

How many right wingers or libertarians are advocating for systemic change to get money out of politics? Is Elon? No - because he believes money is free speech, he has the most money so he has the most free speech. Until that is addressed, then the rest of this talk is fluff.

wturner··on Declining fertility ideals? Young people more often prefer having no children
That was a round about way of saying people can’t afford kids so they don’t consider it a life choice
wturner··on Public US hearing on UFOs [video]
Culturally, everything in the U.S revolves around financial opportunism. When people are poor trapped in gig economy with three jobs, it becomes difficult to rationalize a zillion dollar military….that’s what religion is for, and that’s all this horseshit is
wturner··on Elixir for Ruby developers: the three most important differences
I built a real-time updating internal test bed reservation system for the company I am employed by. It’s mostly a LiveView app with some external modules and js hooks scattered throughout.
wturner··on The internet didn’t kill counterculture, it's just not on Instagram (2021)
The billionaire right has funneled gobs of money into mirroring racist, fundamentalist, nationalistic loons as a troop rally for tax breaks downstream at the ballot box. It's only counter-cultural if you fail to see through it.
wturner··on React to LiveView for Performance [audio]
Sometimes you can come in the side door. I built a testbed reservation app for the GUI team I work with using Phoenix LiveView. The Product manager was surprised out fast I hammered it out. So far everyone is using it without a hitch. It's not product code, but it's still in active use with no problems.
wturner··on McDonald's just dropped a brand new Game Boy game
In beginning of the game, the McDonalds logo only appears on a garbage can and if you run into it - you die. It's a positive message for health conscious parents.
wturner··on Douglas Crockford on JavaScript
He is promoting an "actor language" to replace JavaScript. https://www.crockford.com/misty/
wturner··on Volume eating acts as an effective weight-loss hack
Summary: Habitually compose your meals of bulky, nutrient dense, low calorie foods like broccoli, you will feel full and consume less calories.
wturner··on [dead]
"Fuck them" driven development
wturner··on Daily habits of happiness experts
Self help fluff is the drop in replacement for economic instability by the psychotherapy world. Economics is too political and “like the weather” it’s just a natural phenomena that nobody can do anything about (sarcasm)
wturner··on Ask HN: How does a hobby programmer get hired?
If you can pass employer coding challenges as easily as you say, the rest is low hanging fruit. It’s hard for me to imagine what the problem is on your end. I have the complete inverse problem.

Here’s what I would do:

Make up a name for your own personal company and get a matching domain. Make a basic website with your domain. Under the resume/CV entry for this make-believe-company write that you perform contract work and list projects you’ve done.Frame the entry to implicitly infer they were paid gigs. Don’t lie about them being personal projects but don’t say they were for free either! In the date entry for the job type a value that spans a time value of your choice, say 3 years.

Congrats you’ve now been writing code professionally for three years. With your new contracting company you have the scaffolding to get new paid projects to boot.

Welcome to professional programming.

wturner··on Paul Graham is leaving Twitter for now
I think it’s beautiful that more and more people are being forced to confront what U.S plutocracy looks like in real-time. It’s usually caked in legalese and unspoken cultural assumptions that finance and tech people exploit while the rest of us just watch. Musk, Trump and a handful of these other cranks are turning this sociopathic toxic mess into real-time online cartoon that even a 13 year old can understand. The result can either be a new healthy awareness of how public policy is leveraged to make society more healthy and fair , or the Elon Musks of the world can continue living in a bubble, being flaming arrogant narcissist perpetually in fear of ending up like Paul Pelosi - in our real-time geo located world.
wturner··on Kanye West is buying Parler
This is a great point. People become calcified and stuck in their ways as a survival mechanism! Times change and circumstances do too thus the axioms floating around in our heads deviate from "reality" like a lifeboat floating away while we pretend everything is normal. This is not only a lesson for the extreme rich - but everyone.
wturner··on Kanye West is buying Parler
Candace Owens - Wilks Bros funded figure head tasked with helping socially engineer a culture that removes taxes on the rich and feed contempt for real democracy.
wturner··on P5.js – A library to make coding accessible for artists, designers, educators

wturner··on Ask HN: Any open source stack exchange clone
I used this about a decade ago. No complaints. https://github.com/q2a/question2answer
wturner··on I think US college education is nearer to collapsing than it appears
""Libertarianism and extreme capitalism" are great for people who are intelligent and driven."

It's good for people that want to rationalize their extreme wealth as "meritocracy" when it's inherently luck of the draw that any of us find ourselves where we are. A real libertarian society entails an informal economy and is what the developing world is trying to get out of. State policy is needed to maintain some kind of social order, a libertarian government is the complete inverse of a command and control economy - both are social disasters.

wturner··on Do things, tell people (2012)
This is down to earth advice that matches my own experience. Here is a workflow app intend for work-from-home "gig economy" workers and contractors intended to be as easy to use as a search engine. Still experimenting. https://workflow-magic-svelte.vercel.app/
wturner··on Ask HN: How can we make humanity as a whole smarter?
You're conflating intelligence with values. We don't know what intelligence is.

A lot of psychopaths, racists, sociopaths, Dogecoin promoting tech entrepreneurs, gang members, etc are very intelligent according to their own values and their immediate perceived interests irrespective of how dumb they may seem to people like myself that simply don't share their values. To answer your question, in the same way media literacy and sex education have edged their way closer to being first class forms of education, we need to do the same with the concept of social engineering. Everything humans do is social engineering - everything. Ingratiating an awareness of social engineering into the culture as a responsible and useful tool and do so in a way that is crystallized and direct should be a first class citizen. As it stands this is taught indirectly through a hodgepodge of scattered concepts like "leadership skills", "media literacy","customer service" , .... whatever.

Fuck all this - it's all just social engineering and that is what should be taught. Full stop.

Awareness is needed to help inoculate people against under-challenged ideological assumptions, cults, corporate cults, tech cults, social media cults, nationalist cults,nation-state cults, military cults, business cults, gang cults, and charismatic sociopaths trying to build their own cults. But of course, my view reflects my values and not my "intelligence". :)

wturner··on As religious faith has declined, ideological intensity has risen
I don't know who "most people" are but if you are conflating science with values (I did a quick look up of the definition of "scientism") you are doing it wrong - and it isn't science. This reminds me of a video I watched once. An author named Sam Harris wrote an entire book titled The Moral Landscape that supposedly (I haven't read the book) makes the argument that science can precisely inform our value judgments . A physics professor named Sean Carol confronted him publicly on his views and explained the demarcation between values and science. Each time Sean would pin him down Sam would squirm around and change the topic or miss the point. I don't think most people agree with Sam Harris's view (which from what I've read embody what you are talking about) , but at the same time I don't think most people care about any of this stuff either way. :)
wturner··on As religious faith has declined, ideological intensity has risen
I wish we had a world where the discernment between science, axiom and ideology was a real thing ironed into the public muscle memory as much as ideology itself. Idealism.
wturner··on Money corrupts; bitcoin corrupts absolutely
It exist in granular form in government safety nets, universal healthcare and a handful of other policies in some parts of the world. it also exists in various disjointed pockets of the human experience outside of any easily identified ideological framework. Beyond those tools, it's not called anything because it doesn't exist in totality.
wturner··on Money corrupts; bitcoin corrupts absolutely
"Relieving humans from having to worry about or deal with money would be an actual Copernican revolution. How that would work is beyond me, but that's precisely why it would be revolutionary."
