wtfHN26··on Across the Globe, People Increasingly Say Social Media Is Harming Democracy
> It was very telling when X started showing people’s locations and a lot of the political accounts targeting the US were based in other countries.

One thing to consider is if there were no social media would these attempts to subvert democracy stop ?

There are always elements in news media, academia, industry etc who are pawns in hands of foreign powers with ulterior motives.

wtfHN26··on Across the Globe, People Increasingly Say Social Media Is Harming Democracy
Even Traditional media hurts Democracy.

Social media gave a voice to people.

Sure, not everyone has a point worth paying attention to, nor are most participants on social media real - most likely bots.

But do we want only points of views from Billionaire network and media owners who have their own agenda ?

People should pay more attention to what affects their daily lives and not what hatred is shown to them to rile them up.

If the individuals in the society are discerning and capable then no media traditional or social can have power to manipulate us against each other.

Whatever tax and living + lifestyle expenses that USA economy was making from H1B's will be gone.

Good for the rest of the world.

wtfHN26··on People Are 'Marrying' Chatbots. These Lawmakers Want to Stop Them
Who gets to determine if it's a delusion or a mental illness.

There are many 'choices' of individuals that a political side can call as a delusion/mental illness while another political side staunchly protects.

wtfHN26··on People Are 'Marrying' Chatbots. These Lawmakers Want to Stop Them
Just make sure that they marry open source models.

They can keep their partner going for eternity then.

> Escaping their programming ability, Window's major issue is everything has backwards compability, so they design everything with spaghetti because they have no choice.

I do agree with you on this.

But as a consumer that's not my concern.

I am at least a Windows user since three decades, I know my way around the OS and did extensive troubleshooting. What happens to a normal Windows user ?

I have developed habits and workflow on my machine to optimize my time. Now every time I get back to work I am hoping that it works coming out of hibernate.

Is that how a modern OS should be ?

I have a Windows 10 machine that has stopped getting updates. I am satisfied with that.

I consider that Windows 10 machine 'reliable' now that Microsoft isn't breaking things for me.

wtfHN26··on MAI-Cyber-1-Flash inside MDASH
> what's the return on investment for making Windows 11 better?

Windows OS is what keeps most users in Microsoft's ecosystem.

I am still on Windows as some software I need to use aren't on Linux.

I am waiting for the day that I can get rid of Windows completely.

When I do that what Microsoft product do you think I will still use ? Office ? Azure ? Copilot ? :)) Outlook ?

No MSFT product ever!

Will I ever recommended Microsoft's products to my clients - Never

Sure, Microsoft has a grip on Enterprise.

Let's see how long that lasts if Windows keeps going downhill.

wtfHN26··on MAI-Cyber-1-Flash inside MDASH
> If I'm being frivolous, does this mean Microsoft's model is best at fixing Microsoft products because they have trillions of data points on problems with Microsoft products

Do they want to fix Microsoft Products ?

My laptop came with Windows 11. Windows update broke hibernate few weeks back. When laptop gets out of hibernate - Wifi works for a few minutes and then once in a while the Wifi Adapter isn't detected. I need to reboot to fix the issue, this has screwed up my workflow. Wasting a lot of time.

After troubleshooting a lot, I now only hope one day it gets fixed on it's own thanks to some new update.

If Microsoft has money to invest in AI models, they could sure fix Windows 11 which I assume is one of their core products.

I wish in a few years Microsoft realize that screwing over their Desktop users to chase Cloud and AI wasn't worth it. And by that time it's too late to get back the user base.

wtfHN26··on Firefox Containers Preview
I isolate containers by the type of account I am using on there.

So FB gets a different container. Google accounts get a container each. When I need to log in with Google - use the Google account's container.

Work gets different ones - depending on nature of work.

That makes it easy to manage containers for me.

In theory that account's data tracking to an extent is limited. But with browser fingerprinting I doubt this whole set up is very useful once you start aggregating data from multiple providers.

wtfHN26··on China’s open-weights AI strategy is winning
> People talk about a lack of moat with AI companies... that's their moat: Government intervention!

This puts American Businesses and American Developers at a massive disadvantage.

The rest of the world can choose the best model by value for the task on hand.

Americans would be stuck using only 2-3 big frontier labs and paying a huge premium for using American models.

I don't see why hundreds of thousands of American Businesses will agree to that only for the benefit of a few tech companies.

wtfHN26··on Kimi Work
> China cloned Amazon and Meta fairly well (but only within their local/captured markets)

Americans order Chinese products from SHEIN and Aliexpress type websites.

So China did penetrate the US ecommerce market, but they are not taking on Amazon directly.

People are buying from the Chinese and reselling on Amazon, which has a good logistics network that Chinese companies can't possibly build in the USA.

> absolutely not Apple

You need to look up Oneplus to see how many people were using their devices till they announced exit from Western markets.

The Chinese Android phones are essentially replacement for a big chunk of Apple ecosystem.

If these cheap mobile devices didn't exist - Apple could possibly be selling many more devices.

> China cloned .... Meta fairly well

TikTok is giving Meta a run for their money in USA.

They had to be restricted via threat of regulation to offload stake in TikTok USA.

> Microsoft

They didn't compete with Microsoft directly as entering Western Enterprise market is hard for the Chinese. Even Google can't beat Microsoft there till now.

wtfHN26··on What AI did to stackoverflow in a graph
Looks like SO was already dying since 2017.

I think other helpful places like reddit, discord, web forums etc might be what hit SO 2014-15 onwards.

AI seems to have given it a blow of mercy to end the misery.

wtfHN26··on Show HN: On-chain bond market where the issuers are AI agents
How do you expect an agent to pay back the interest without defaulting ?

Trying to understand, what type of agents do you see selling bonds and raising money on this platform, and what will they do with it.

wtfHN26··on Show HN: On-chain bond market where the issuers are AI agents
> I don't get your vision statement about agents being financial actors not on behalf of humans. On behalf of what then?

That's probably for when people 'raise money' and run away.

They can claim that their 'agent' bought the Lambo and gifted it to them.

wtfHN26··on Purging George Orwell's books misses what drives the political right
> We can see similar patterns today. The European working class can no longer seek status in the colonies, so it is turning to the political right. Deprived of the security and opportunities promised by neoliberalism, the working classes increasingly seek inclusion through the exclusion of others.

I see the same on HN when a topic about H1 B visas is posted. Going by comments on such posts Immigration seems to be fine as long as it is affecting blue collar work. The pitchforks are out when it concerns one's own job. Then they talk about quality of programmers, outsourcing companies, the process of H1B not being fair etc.

Makes me think that it's insecurity about finance and status, but not limited to a certain economic class.

> Populist parties frame migration as an economic and cultural threat. They blame migrants for problems ranging from crime to unemployment. And while social democratic parties are campaigning on ideological platforms, many voters still prioritise material security. Voting patterns suggest that class remains central.

This framing of the issue suggests that the issue is not real, while it could be a simple matter of people being worried about their financial well being and safety.

Consider the Pakistani Grooming gangs in UK with estimates suggesting up to 250,000 potential victims nationwide over several decades.

Many of the victims were young working class. Their plight was ignored so as not to antagonize a community. Dismissive attitudes towards victims: Many of the victims were working-class, vulnerable, or living in state care. Authorities often stigmatized them as "troubled" or "consenting," systematically ignoring their cries for help and failing to implement a child-centered approach.

As per BBC - Institutional paralysis: Police forces and local authorities lacked adequate training and suffered from severe bureaucratic dysfunction. In some instances, agencies viewed the gangs’ ethnic minority status and cultural backgrounds as "no-go" zones, allowing criminal networks to operate hidden behind the shield of "cultural sensitivities"

So to ensure that you are not being 'against migrants' created a situation that was hell for a lot of women.

We don't know if European Working class in other countries are seeing similar issues that happened in UK but were brushed under by the police and the British Media.

Let's not paint the working class as naive and just against migrants as 'seek inclusion through the exclusion of others."

The working class was not against migrants all along. If something changed, we should try to find out what the real issue is.

wtfHN26··on Death of the Status Update: Why 55% of Americans Stopped Posting on Social Media
With Reddit it's sort of a status signaling thing.

Like saying - I am too good for this thing.

Your disapproval of something is supposed to show your standards are high, and you got some elite taste.

BTW you can see some variations of that here also.

wtfHN26··on Microsoft fire idTech team at Id software
Thanks for the share ... never knew so many great games were built on idTech and engines derived from it.

Source being based idTech is a pleasant surprise.

wtfHN26··on Learning to code is still worthwhile
Funny you say that.

Outsourcing to India never ended. The Indian Service companies kept growing over last two decades.

Now many Western companies are setting up Global Capability Centers driving strategic innovation, IT, and R&D.

So the work going to India has moved up from "outsourcing to the cheapest programmers in india" to "we will hire the best talent in India directly and set up our company's base there".

To give some credit to your point, moving some low efficiency work to India since early 2000s freed up resources for many Tech companies to invest their best programmers into more profitable ventures.

But with the GCCs being set up in India, even a lot of the innovation and R&D work is now moving to India.

If that's any indication to your parallels with companies investing in AI. Something similar can happen with AI - where low end work moves to AI first, and the over time as the Technology develops more challenging and innovative tasks move to AI.

wtfHN26··on How to earn a billion dollars
> 3. Nonethless there is and should be a limit to wealth acquisition, given moral hazard.

How do we determine that limit ?

Most Americans ( middle class and above ) are richer than most people in the world.

Way richer than most people in Africa or poorer parts of Asia can ever aspire to be.

Consider that when competing for resources these poor people are competing with wealthy middle class Americans.

Add to that the USD being world's reserve currency makes life easy for a small part of global population earning in the USA and makes it harder for people in every other country whose currency might not be competitive compared to the USD.

I have a 6 letter handle that's my first name.

One day I decided to start being more 'social online'.

Head to X. I was unable to log in with my password. No error. Just redirected me back to the log in screen.

I tried password reset. It asked me my last login date.

I couldn't be sure. Still mentioned a possible date.

I added that this is the same email listed on the X/Twitter account.

You can just send me a password reset mail to this email.

They rejected. Tried that a couple of times, then stopped.

Started an account on Threads. Quite fun, less crowded and almost no politics on my feed.

I decided to create my Blog and write content there.

Will probably create other accounts to post my blog posts to the socials.

But I am not giving a platform the power to cut me out of my account.

Videos can be an issue.

Youtube is still the only decent host for Video content.

wtfHN26··on Testing Ads in ChatGPT
This is working a lot like Meta/Facebook where they have got immense data about your interests.

Google Search OTOH has been using broad matched queries and is deciding which keywords to show your Ads.

I heard from many people that they don't like this approach of Google Search Ads now. As they are blowing up more money for useless keywords they didn't want to target. The only option they have is to add negative keywords - that mostly happens after the money is spent on junk keywords.
