wskemper··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2024)
Saildrone | Multiple Roles | Hybrid in Alameda, CA or Washington, DC | US only, no visas

Saildrone is on a mission to help scientists and sailors better understand the ocean and everything in it, to preserve a healthy ocean and a safe, sustainable planet. We make autonomous sailing robots that travel the oceans, measuring almost everything they can find along the way. Think of them as floating maritime tricorders. Saildrones have discovered new underwater mountains[1], circumnavigated Antarctica[2], and even traveled right through hurricanes[3]!

The company is growing a lot in the next year as we expand our business both domestically and internationally. We've got openings on multiple teams (including my Security group) and will be opening more throughout the year. If you don't see the right fit today, keep checking back in future "Who's Hiring?" posts!

We are expanding our Security team with two software engineers to help cover a wide array of needs: building security services, helping other teams assess the security of their own work, running pentests and tabletops, teaching security classes, and working with auditors to prove we do all the above. You read that right - we do SWENG, APPSEC, OFFSEC, SECED, and GRC all at the same time! I can guarantee you'll never get bored.

I've listed two positions, but we're flexible on levels for the right candidates:

* Software Engineer: https://careers.jobscore.com/careers/saildrone/jobs/software...

wskemper··on Ask HN: Why does YubiCo need my private key?
It's still popular in certain corporate settings, where you're dealing with workflows that don't have easy support for FIDO2. For example, certain embedded browsers for logging in to VPNs.

Saildrone | Staff Software Engineer, Security | Full-time ONSITE in Alameda, CA

Saildrone is on a mission to help scientists and sailors better understand the ocean and everything in it, to preserve a healthy ocean and a safe, sustainable planet. We make autonomous sailing robots that travel the oceans, measuring almost everything they can find along the way. Think of them as floating maritime tricorders. Saildrones have discovered new underwater mountains[1], circumnavigated Antarctica[2], and even traveled right through hurricanes[3], including Idalia just this week!

We are building a new Security team, and are looking to hire our first IC(s). You would be working with me, alongside our engineering, manufacturing, and operations teams in Alameda, to ramp up our security efforts across the board and ensure that our drones and networks are producing reliable data for our customers.

wskemper··on Ask HN: Which project does not have any good open-source alternatives?
I'm surprised no one has said "PowerPoint" yet. LibreOffice and Google Slides are nowhere close. Animations, theming, diagramming tools... I run an Ubuntu laptop and have been missing PowerPoint so much I tried to get a Windows VM for it. Couldn't get graphics support in VirtualBox working correctly :(

Viasat | Seattle, WA, USA | Full Time | ONSITE

Viasat aims to be the planet's first global ISP. We build the world's biggest and fastest satellites, providing service to homes, business, airlines, and more. Our technology connects parents to children, soldiers to their commanders, and emergency responders to support lines, whether they're in Dayton, OH or climbing the slopes of Denali.

We were founded in San Diego in 1986 by three engineers who sought to build the company they wanted to work for, and that emphasis on our employees continues to this day. It sounds a little silly, but we still retain a lot of the beach town influence from that founding, this many years on. I’ve been with the company for over eight years now (a decade if you count internships!), through a number of different projects and teams, and still love working here.

We are hiring for a couple positions in the Seattle office I run:

* Product Owner, Identity - http://bit.ly/2DWs9DT

* Security Software Engineer - http://bit.ly/2APViNX

Email stephan dot kemper at viasat.com, or apply online.

Candidates only; recruiter/agency emails will be used only to train our spam filters :)

wskemper··on Ask HN: What are some tech companies that do not use an open floor plan?
We absolutely are! Our list of open positions is on our website: https://www.viasat.com/careers/openings. I'd post my usual spiel about our Seattle office (where I work now), but we're renting coworking space up here, so I don't want to bait and switch.
wskemper··on Ask HN: What are some tech companies that do not use an open floor plan?
This comment dug up some of the photos: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16879350. They're a good representation.
wskemper··on Ask HN: What are some tech companies that do not use an open floor plan?
Yes that's it! Now I've got a bunch of other places to throw those... :) I don't know the cost, I just experience the value.
wskemper··on Ask HN: What are some tech companies that do not use an open floor plan?
I tried finding some online but it looks like we haven't published any. I'll need to get permission; our customer base cares very much about facility security. Let me see what I can rustle up.
wskemper··on Ask HN: What are some tech companies that do not use an open floor plan?
I work for Viasat; all of our new-build offices in the past few years have been designed around what we call the neighborhood concept. A neighborhood is a set of individual offices (maybe 60sqft-ish?) with three solid walls, and one glass/wood wall with a sliding door. All the offices open into a central room that can be outfitted in a bunch of different ways. There are neighborhoods of different sizes, and basically, each team gets a neighborhood to themselves. The whole concept was developed through a series of experiments that took several years.

Some teams make use of the space better than others, of course, but for my group it's been a huge boon to our collaborative culture. The offices are well-insulated, so you don't need headphones to achieve quiet, but if you want to, you can leave your door open and hear what your teammates are discussing at any time.

Over time we're upgrading our older facilities to the same model, but in general there are few open-plan offices or cube farms in the company, and I highly doubt we're going to build more. Many years ago, our founders made it a company priority to give folks a door they can close, to get away from "it all" and focus.

ViaSat | Software Engineer, viasat.io Platform | Dublin, Ireland | Full-Time https://www.viasat.com

ViaSat is on a mission to be the world’s first global ISP. From Denali to Uluru, JetBlue 190 to Air Force One, and everywhere in between, our technology delivers Internet access no matter where life’s journeys take you. We’re shaping the future of global connectivity, and we want your help!

My team builds the viasat.io Platform, a suite of foundational network and security services that every group at ViaSat uses to build and protect their products. We also serve as advisors for other engineering teams, helping them make better use of cloud technologies and practices.

On any given day, you may be walking colleagues through the finer points of VPC design, or presenting a workshop on developing against viasat.io’s APIs. You might be adding DNSSEC support to our DNS service, automating TLS certificate validation across the entire network, or deploying our services to a new continent. Our challenges and our products are always evolving, which leaves little chance you'll ever get bored.

We are looking for engineers who are proficient with multiple languages, and are familiar with existing IaaS and PaaS products like AWS, OpenStack, or Marathon. We also need our team members to be good communicators and people-friendly, as our daily work involves interfacing with many people all around the company. An engineering degree or equivalent experience is necessary.

You'd get bonus points for having a strong security background, in-depth knowledge of networking, or previous work experience building globally-distributed applications.

This engineer will be our first European hire; most of the team operates out of the US. You'll be working with ViaSat's European engineering teams to bring them to the cloud, just as we're doing with our US teams as well.

Email stephan.kemper@viasat.com if you're interested!

wskemper··on Ask HN: How has volunteering helped you grow?
Until recently, I volunteered as a coach for my local school district's Science Olympiad, in the middle school division. My first year they asked me to work with one of the aviation events. I'd never really had an interest in flight, and certainly not to the extent that I could teach others about it.

First lesson: middle schoolers (think 11 - 14 years old) will test your patience in new and completely unimagined ways, if you don't have kids of your own. They will also surprise you in a bunch of wonderful ways too. I had to learn how to corral their attention, navigate their relationships with each other, and motivate them to actually get stuff done. Turns out it was great training for being a supervisor later on :)

Second lesson: I had to learn about flight, more than I'd ever before, and figure out how to teach it. I don't think I did this very well, to be honest, but five years after graduating school it was nice to teach myself something that wasn't tech-related.

Final lesson: I had to learn to accept there were things I could not fix. As an engineer and inveterate tinkerer, this is hard for me to come to terms with. Even in the affluent area I lived in, and with kids who had all volunteered for this after-school activity, we had kids with serious home issues, kids whose friends were dealing with hard personal problems, and at least one violent outburst. I saw the kids for ninety minutes a week; the best I could do was make a welcoming and safe environment for them. That has never really sat well with me.

My job changed, and now I travel too much to coach anymore. It's my biggest regret about the change. I miss working with those kids.

wskemper··on Comcast says it will not sell customer browsing histories
I work for a small satellite ISP, ViaSat (d/b/a Exede). Part of my job is data security specifically for this type of information. We've had it in our privacy policy since Day 1 back in 2012 that we don't give or sell this data to anyone who doesn't actually need it, and certainly not to advertisers. One of the things that makes me proud to work here.

ViaSat | Cloud Engineer | San Diego, Boston, Denver, REMOTE

ViaSat has many businesses, but our largest is our satellite ISP, which provides Internet access to homes, business, and airplanes (JetBlue, United, Virgin). We're making the shift to cloud infrastructure in a big way, and are looking for people to help our Cloud Engineering team fulfill our dual purpose: first, to work alongside product and service teams to help them adopt cloud technologies; and second, to build and operate platform services that all our partner teams want, but can't do themselves (LDAP, DNS, CA, logging, etc). The job is a combination of software development, education, security engineering, and operations.

I'm looking for people who are

* software engineers with EE/CS degrees or equivalent experience

* handy with multiple languages, since we need to work in the stacks our partners use

* proficient with networking and sysadmin concepts, on top of algorithms and data structures

* experienced with cloud environments, the more the better (we use mostly AWS and OpenStack)

Bonus points if you have:

* previously worked in agile teams

* a background in security, since we do a lot of security work

* built out services using modern DevOps tools, like GoCD or Ansible
