wryun··on Improving Firefox Responsiveness on macOS
Depends what you care about. I think there are two main reasons to use Firefox over Chrome:

- better privacy protections

- not wanting to leave web standards entirely to Google/Apple (for-profit corps)

Brave attempts to address the first, but does little about the second as it uses Blink (i.e. Chrome's engine). Personally, I care a lot more about the second.

wryun··on Asus Zenfone 9
It's shorter and narrower than a 3a (but deeper).

or https://www.unihertz.com/collections/smartphones/products/je... if you can deal with something a bit older.

wryun··on Asus Zenfone 9
And a bit fatter... but for me width is the most important for easier use.
wryun··on Asus Zenfone 9
It's only 1mm wider than an iPhone 6 with its 4.7" screen.
wryun··on Ultra-minimal JSON schemas with TypeScript inference
Even more minimal one I made years ago:

wryun··on Shrugs.app – A native Slack client for macOS
If you use a browser as your client, this can be done. No need for electron either :)
wryun··on The Documentation Triangle, or, why code isn't self documenting
What often frustrates me is that a lot of doco isn't read: it's "easier" for people to ask (I don't exclude myself from this).
wryun··on The Documentation Triangle, or, why code isn't self documenting
I do not usually use diagrams. Therefore... I'm not a person? :)
wryun··on Claws Mail

There are three. Dillo does some crazy embedding thing (and only works in X, not Wayland), litehtml is simpler but can't render everything. Haven't tried 'Fancy' - since it's webkit, it's probably the closest to a real HTML email experience.

wryun··on Twelve-factor app anno 2022
One approach I like (tell me if I'm mistaken!) is to pass things in the environment but read and remove them immediately on startup. This prevents leaking your secrets accidentally if you spawn another process etc., and has the advantage that you can use a secret store in production but raw env vars in development.
wryun··on A first for Canada: New type of nuclear plant opening by 2028
Even the one proposed has a six-year timeframe (what's the bet that timeframe isn't met?). Imagine trying to get an SMR reactor up in Australia within 10 years, given the legislative environment and the public opposition to it.
wryun··on A first for Canada: New type of nuclear plant opening by 2028
Sure, I should have said _relatively_ easy. But see how much of a reaction you'd get to a fission power station (regardless of the rights and wrongs of it...).
wryun··on A first for Canada: New type of nuclear plant opening by 2028
Takes too long to build fission plants to replace coal in the short term; easy to spin up lots of wind/solar. We've also got a ridiculous amount of renewable potential.

(I'm a candidate for the Fusion Party; we'd like to remove the ban on nuclear power in Australia because it would enable research)

wryun··on Update on the Atlassian outage affecting some customers
I think what they're implying is that they can restore _everyone's_ data quickly (i.e. 'usual' infra failure), and one Jira instance's data fairly quickly (but some manual steps), but the problem is they nuked a large subset of customers while everything else kept running. This means that they can't do a complete automatic restore, and instead have to deal with it customer at a time.

I'm sure that they're going to make their customer at a time thing properly automatic now... Still a big failure, but a little more subtle than you make out.

(disclaimer - worked for Atlassian years ago)

wryun··on Ask HN: Has anyone else gotten the 'Turning Red' ad after Firefox update?
Except it's just another blink repackage. I think the really important thing is web standards, which means supporting gecko or webkit.

wryun··on Celery in production: Three more years of fixing bugs
I'm also in the 'anything but Celery' camp:

https://dramatiq.io/motivation.html

If you're backing onto something like SQS or Rabbit (Redis is a bit trickier), it's not the worst thing to hand-roll either. Then you understand exactly what trade-offs you're making.

wryun··on Vile – Vi Like Emacs
Posted because when I originally started using vi clones I didn't look at Vile (why do I want a 'vi like emacs'? Do I really want a 'vile' editor?), but eventually realised:

- it has all the features I want

- it's a lot faster than vim or vis (smooth behaviour with syntax highlighting even on an original RPI)

- it's still maintained (unlike elvis)

wryun··on OpenVi: Portable OpenBSD vi for Unix systems
I've found vile a good option as I'm addicted to syntax highlighting: similar speed to nvi, much faster than vis and vim.

wryun··on Ask HN: How to deal with AV compliance requirement on small VMs?
Note that if we rearchitected to use Kubernetes or similar, we'd get a lot less burst CPU capacity for the price. And it would be a little depressing to do some much work just to install AV...
wryun··on Almost free serverless on-demand Minecraft server in AWS
Well, thanks for this. Now I can have fun running https://www.brow.sh when ssh'd in from by original Raspberry Pi.

Yes, there is no point to this, but if it's free... ?

wryun··on Australia’s new mass surveillance mandate
It's compulsory to submit a vote. If you wish to abstain, you can vote informally.
wryun··on Rolling your own minimal embedded Linux for the Raspberry Pi
Alternatively, you can use Void Linux and most of the work is done... admittedly, no read only fs by default.
wryun··on Firefox 91 introduces enhanced cookie clearing
I've been reading some of Roald Dahl's Matilda in Scots (scribd subscription). It's fun!
wryun··on Blockly: A JavaScript library for building visual programming editors
The NFP I work for has used this extensively - thanks Google!

wryun··on Download – Armbian
Submitted this because I find looking for armbian support the easiest way to figure out if an ARM board is worth buying, and their download page is pretty nice.
