wr1472··on Raspberri PI Release Announcement
I think this is a great success for RPi. Demand exceeded expectations. They always said the first batch would be 10,000 in size, and that's been eaten up in minutes (or probably seconds).

I would rather they had a small initial run first, that didn't take so long to get to market, and allowed them to test the waters tentatively. The alternative would have been to take a much larger risk, longer lead time, and bigger upfront cost to make a bigger batch.

We're always advocating that companies should ship small and early and then iterate to refine their product. This is a MVP from them. If I was involved I would be extremely proud and overjoyed at this.

all the complainers should take a step back and relax. What's the worst that has happened because you couldn't get you hands on this just yet? It's not as though you have lost money, missed deadlines, or anything else. Just give the consumerism a rest for a while.

As for RS Components' and Farnell's reputation as businesses...

PS. I did get up at 6am to try and order a board, but wasn't too disappointed when I couldn't get on the RS website. I can wait another month or so.

Also I would recommend going for an IPS monitor if you want to use it vertically, as it has a much wider viewing angle compared to TN monitors.

Agreed. Seen so many of these initiatives come and go at various companies.

The only thing that worked, and people reverted back to wasn't the "sexiest" of solutions - An email list. Data gets pushed to you, you don't have to be logged into a specific application or site to view it.

wr1472··on Agile: 5 years later and you're still doing it wrong
> Google sounds like an exceptionally disciplined software-engineering company indeed! This to me implies they do NOT need Agile.

This implies discipline and Agile (big 'A') are mutually exclusive. From my experience you have to be very disciplined to do Good Agile (and I have experience of Bad Agile too).

My previous car had automatic keyless entry. If the key is not in the car then an audible beep sounds. Be quite difficult to miss that. I wonder if the above anecdotes are based on after market installations?
wr1472··on Tesla Model S Options and Pricing
Agreed, it looks like a standard 5 seater sedan/saloon. I'm so conditioned to how cars should look, I just cannot figure out how (or where) the two additional seats are placed. I really wish they are successful with this.
wr1472··on The evil unit test.
I've not come across the article before. The section on coupling tests to implementation I guess is the most pertinent part (http://martinfowler.com/articles/mocksArentStubs.html#Coupli...).

> Coupling to the implementation also interferes with refactoring, since implementation changes are much more likely to break tests than with classic testing.

Fowler acknowledges two different styles of tests - state/behaviour also can be termed as classic/mockist. He doesn't really advocate one over the other. I do mock when I have to, but only when there is no other way to setup my test. It is certainly not the default. I find that taking this approach does not make my tests brittle, and makes them robust enough to handle the majority of refactoring exercises.

Of course YMMV.

wr1472··on The evil unit test.
Agreed refactoring method signatures will cause tests to break, but they should be relatively trivial to fix.

Black box tests are not limited to behavioral or system integration testing. you can black box at the unit level. In fact if you are doing proper TDD you will write the tests first, which help to define the interface of the class under test, make sure the test fails to ensure you are testing for something, and then finally write the implementation to make the test pass. Such an approach implies it is black box as you've defined your interface before your implementation.

Remember you are testing what it does, not how it does it.

wr1472··on The evil unit test.
Sounds like your test were quite brittle, if refactoring application code causes tests to break. A good mental rule I use is: "test the what not the how". It also a good reason to program (and test) to interfaces than to the implementation, although you have to be careful with this as it is all too easy to go OTT in your use of design patterns. You have to know how to strike the right balance.

Is the phone call usually that important that you can't wait. Oh and when eating with your hands it's usually with you right hand. Your not meant to use your left as that's for other things (when you go to the restroom).

wr1472··on Request for Startups: Kill Hollywood.
So this sounds like a double edged problem - 1. The actual cost of producing films, as you've mentioned already does it really have to cost so much? Technology could help with this but I don't think is the only solution. 2. The financing of the movie - what if some kind of mutual fund/investment vehicle was created that only invested in film productions? look to individuals as well as institutions for investors.

Incidentally Francis Ford Coppola's comments quoted below are quite telling. If we are viewing movies as an art form then the cost (and revenue) generated should be a lot lower. If it is viewed as entertainment then it will be run as a business; making money will trump creativity and artistry every time.

wr1472··on Request for Startups: Kill Hollywood.
How about a way of opening up financing to the public? Ideas get pitched, and the public can invest - kickstarter for movies?

We've had fan-fiction, this would fan-financing.
