world2vec··on Buckminster Fuller: everything I know
"Your Private Sky - The Art of Design Science" is also really good. Lots of photos and sketches.
world2vec··on FFmpeg 9.0
They used Claude for this release, as stated yesterday in their twitter page.
world2vec··on FFmpeg 9.0
In FFmpeg's twitter page it says that several of their developers got six free months of Claude Max 20x plan through Anthropic's Claude for Open Source Program, and that it was used, so far, to help find missing backports for this 9.0 release.
world2vec··on Europe's fires are just the start
"Being better at fighting fires, though, is not enough."

Yeah, it's nowhere near enough. We need to seriously revamp how we manage forests. They must be regularly cleaned, huge fire breaks between fenced areas and roads must be created and maintained. Prescribed burns on a regular schedule. Houses cannot be too close to the trees, no matter how pretty it looks. A huge clean radius must be maintained between houses and trees and between properties. All this work must be done in the winter and everything must be prepared for the summer. Every year. Everywhere.

I see none of this happening at a proper scale in my country (Portugal). So of course every summer we se huge forest fires. Lives lost, ecosystems destroyed. Next year it happens again...

It's only going to get worse.

world2vec··on Azulejo
Viúva de Lamego is not a "local" artist per se but they're a leading artisanal workshop in classic and contemporary Portuguese tiles. If you have the budget, their tailor-made tiles are something else, imagination is the limit. (source: my dad does a lot of house restorations in Portugal and some require custom tiles to fill in missing/damaged areas)
world2vec··on Anthropeum – Where in the world, and when, does this human artifact belong?
I love this! One of the wrong answers was because I mis-clicked the location. Another one had an inscription saying "1695" and I confidently picked that time bracket (was very wrong!).

Not even close for me too.
world2vec··on Show HN: PBTune – Evolutionary auto-tuning for PostgreSQL (no ML required)
I'm very interested in something like this for MySQL 8.x, will be checking your future work on it.
world2vec··on Writing by hand is good for your brain
Always boggles my mind that some people can't write cursive. So you write each letter one by one?
world2vec··on Ask HN: Alternative Careers in the Age of AI
Unironically: growing citrus fruits in your own land with your own water source.
world2vec··on How Has Roman Concrete Lasted for Millennia? 1,900-Year-Old Latrine Offers Clues
There's also Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer rebar but I don't know much about costs and how good it is vs stainless steel rebar.
world2vec··on Weathergotchi – an E-Paper Climate Logger
The YouTube video [0] is quite funny, I like when someone doesn't take themselves too seriously.

world2vec··on No Spanish Reading Crisis?
I think screens, in this context, means stuff like reading blog posts and whatnot on your phone or laptop.
world2vec··on No Spanish reading crisis?
How could fiction books become outdated? That is an absolutely alien opinion for me!

-edit- I said "non-fiction" when I meant "fiction". Of course non-fiction books become obsolete quite fast sometimes.

world2vec··on No Spanish reading crisis?
I just think listening to a book is not the same as actually reading it. Just my personal preference, really, and I'm not knocking down on audiobooks.

Listening to audiobooks, IMHO, is a more passive and less focused way of consuming literature.

world2vec··on No Spanish reading crisis?
IMHO screens and audio don't count as reading books.
world2vec··on Why is there smoke from the boiler room? – Botanical Garden using Home Assistant
>"And notice what that question actually is: not an accusation, but a catch."

>"This is not bad luck. It’s a structure."

>"We just don’t control it. The vendor does."

Clearly written by an LLM, so many tells.

world2vec··on Decoding the obfuscated bash script on a Uniqlo t-shirt
Oh wow I saw that tshirt at the store and said to my girlfriend "no way that script is functional, probably just for show". I should have persevered.
world2vec··on Dua Lipa opens library for banned and censored books in Portugal
One of those marketing events in a cool instagramable spot in Oporto that already has huge queues of people just to photograph it and I'm sure it will only sell books in English catered to tourists and nomad tech bros that are already ruining the city's housing supply. Awesome.
world2vec··on Forestiere Underground Gardens
In Portuguese "forasteiro" can also be used to mean "foreigner" or "outsider".
world2vec··on The disappearance of Japan's animators
A cursory glance of anime tv shows released in 2006 and there's a lot of good things I'd watch again: Honey & Clover, Kemonozume, Ergo Proxy, Code Geass, Haruhi Suzumiya, etc.

In 2026 the only thing that has captivated me, so far, was the Chainsaw Man movie and Dorohedoro S2.

world2vec··on The disappearance of Japan's animators
Anime has never been more popular but honestly its quality has declined a lot. It's all isekai and supernatural-sexy-schoolgirl-whatever (kinda creepy) these days. Or the same old animes that go on forever.

Every year there's less and less animes that are worth the time to watch IMHO.

world2vec··on How Terry Tao became an evangelist for AI in math
From what I've seen on Tao's YouTube channel, he does use GitHub Copilot via VSCode to write Lean4 code.
world2vec··on Starfish by Peter Watts (1999)
According to his blog, Peter Watts is currently writing the 3rd book of the Firefall Series. It'll be titled "Omniscience", no release date has been set yet.
world2vec··on Starfish by Peter Watts (1999)
The whole Rifters trilogy (quadrilogy?) is amazing, Starfish is actually my least favourite of the Rifters' books but still really good.

The villain Achilles Desjardins (I don't think he shows up in Starfish? been some time since I read it) is possibly one of the most villainous and sociopath characters I've ever read in a book.

world2vec··on Ask HN: What is your (AI) dev tech stack / workflow?
My stack is really boring, just VSCode + Ghostty and Claude Code team plan (premium seat).
world2vec··on Taking a walk may lead to more creativity than sitting, study finds (2014)
Two of the best things for my mental health is maintaining a 7 day moving average of +10k steps and working out every Mon-Fri during lunch time.
world2vec··on SpaceX S-1
You're ignoring all the depreciation costs.
world2vec··on I Spent My Sabbatical Building a Power Meter for Sledgehammers
