worker_person··on The Government Debt Iceberg
But Left wing propaganda is totally fine?
worker_person··on Inflation rose 9.1% in June, even more than expected
People will always be greedy. Pretending otherwise is delusional.

Forcing people compete and provide the best / cheapest product with the fewest resources is how wealth is built up for all. Rich and Poor.

Letting companies that are inefficient fail and go out of business is how you manage them.

Government picking winners and losers is how you screw everything up.

worker_person··on Inflation rose 9.1% in June, even more than expected
This is nonsense.

Unless there is a monopoly, companies have to offer the lowest / best deal or they go out of business quickly.

Food and many other industries are extremely competitive and there is no wiggle room to just raise prices and laugh at poor people.

If transportation is 50% of your products price (end to end); and fuel cost doubles, then you have to raise prices 50% just to break even.

We have a president who is hostile to oil. Let's ignore if that is a good / bad idea for moment.

It's been long enough that price of gas reflects those decisions. Except we've been drawing down our strategic oil reserves to keep prices cheap for the moment. So really it should be a lot higher.

Real pain will begin when the reserve runs out of good oil.

worker_person··on Ask HN: How do you keep code reviews from taking forever?
Usually comes down to one of

  * I don't see any divide by zero bugs. Approved.
  * Some inane argument about code style that the linter enforces.
  * I spent 8 hours figuring out what you did, why you did it, reviewing how code matches the requirements, running the code, testing all the scenarios.
  * Can we rewrite this entire thing because I prefer a different pattern?

Need a really big mirror, like size of planet to start with.

Another neat idea is to use the Sun as a gravitational lens. But you you would need it put it way past Pluto to get proper focus. So maybe another hundred years to get tech and resources to that point.

worker_person··on Thoughts on the potato diet
It was an elimination diet. See what things were bothering me. Severe migraines and autoimmune issues. I was very desperate at that point.

Sweet potatoes didn't bother me at all, and kept me full.

After a month I slowly started adding things back in to see how I reacted. Made it easy to tell what foods were an issue.

worker_person··on Thoughts on the potato diet
I did plain chicken and sweet potatoes for a month. No spices, boiled or baked. Water or Green Tea.

Best I have ever felt. Ended six months of whole body agony.

I try and follow AIP these days. (Potatoes aren't allowed, but Sweet Potatoes are.)

worker_person··on Ask HN: What's is your go to toolset for simple front end development?
How stable is it?

I've been screwed over twice by Angular, RXJS, etc. Every month we had to redo most of our work as the community kept deciding on new directions of correctness.

worker_person··on Venice to introduce entry tickets and fees
Different state. My drivers license says City A. But my taxes go to City B, (they provide police, etc) Geographically this makes sense.

All community centers, pools, camps, etc for both cities refuse to give in-city rates. Since either my license says the wrong city, or my taxes go to the wrong city.

worker_person··on Venice to introduce entry tickets and fees
That is the pure capitalist solution. Venice is a limited resource that is not being managed well at the moment. Over harvested one could say.

Adding a fee, at some point supply and demand will become balanced. The city will have the max number of tourist it can handle at the max price people are willing to pay. The resource will now be managed correctly.

If the income is absurdly high, then other areas may start expanding out into the sea to provide a similar experience. Giving tourist more options. See Islands of Dubai for example. At some point enough new tourist options are opened that Venice will need to lower fee until a new balance is reached.

Thus tourist have more options and lower prices overall. Wealth has been created.

worker_person··on Tell HN: Razorpay a YC company shared donor data under a Section 91 order
I can't find it now, There was an old article talking about a Zombie party in India. Basically bribing an official to get someone declared dead was easy. Getting it fixed was basically impossible. There was some guy running for office who was legally dead.
worker_person··on The importance of stupidity in scientific research
A lot of teenagers and below have zero humility. Arrogance can be useful to get you past the stage when you're terrible and don't realize it, to when you actually are good.

My daughter is learning HTML & CSS, as she's getting annoyed with copying and pasting headers.

Her work is ugly as can be, but she is totally in love with it and proud of it. Think back to early Geocities days.

I'm sure one day she will be embarrassed by her early work, but for now, she's enthusiastic and gaining useful skills.

worker_person··on Supreme Court limits EPA’s power to cut emissions
There are conservative programmers. We just learn to keep our heads down.

I spent a few years researching all viewpoints to figure out my position. Didn't realize I would be hated for thinking for myself.

worker_person··on Supreme Court limits EPA’s power to cut emissions
For EPA. Court took power away from unelected bureaucrats and gave it back to elected officials.

For Row. Court took power away from itself and gave it back to elected officials.

You can vote for those elected officials. This is democracy working as intended.

worker_person··on US Supreme Court says EPA can’t regulate carbon pollution under Clean Air Act
What do you do when an agency exceeds its authority?

Say FDA decides that houses can make people better or sicker. So they start passing housing regulations. This would be a drastic overreach outside of their law. It's experts making decision. They may even be correct. But according to todays ruling congress would need to authorize such a broad power grab.

This is what has been happening for decades, the court is finally telling Congress to get off its rear and do its job.

worker_person··on Extreme temperatures in major Latin American cities could be linked to 1M deaths
Warning. Opinion piece. Just give me my downvotes.

Climate Change is a religion first. Science second.

We are coming out of an ice age. People don't seem to understand that. The real concern is at what rate things are changing because of human. Not are things changing. Sea level rose 420 feet before people were doing much.

People like Al Gore have gotten rich peddling garbage for decades. By now we should all be dead. The famous hockey stick graph that never happened.

If someone is willing to talk nuclear power then are serious and worth listening to. Everyone else is either trying to get rich, or has no critical thinking skills.

worker_person··on Ask HN: How do I earn a small amount of money to sustain myself as a developer?
I found an environment with lots of paired programming, or mentoring was best for my ADHD.

Having someone next to you was wonderful for keeping me on task, and I really shined. Other situations where I was constantly helping people get unstuck also made me the office hero.

Otherwise I struggle like crazy.

worker_person··on As weed gets more potent, teens are getting sick
Yes. I actually am. They both smoked it. She said it seemed fine. He went insane. They tested him. Weed was only thing in system. Full blown psychosis. He had God talking to him. He was God. He was going to have hurt my daughter in divine punishment. He crapped in the tub. His computer was all powerful and was controlling the world. He showed up at his work to hurt them. That's when we found out about it. He got hauled off to a mental facility where they had to keep him tied down for multiple days. Kept trying to hurt the staff. When he stopped being violent, he was still highly delusional for a solid month.

https://www.brightquest.com/cannabis-induced-psychosis/psych....

Bottom line, he can never touch weed again. They can't be around people that do. They've lost most of their friends. Friends didn't agree about them giving up weed. They are starting to make new friends.

They are doing far better now.

worker_person··on As weed gets more potent, teens are getting sick
This is garbage. Work hard, plan hard, save money. Push through setbacks. Maybe you won't be a billionaire. But you can do pretty well in life. Don't blame others for your own laziness.

Just met a guy last month that spent 5 years working at a carwash at minimum wage. He saved up money the entire time. Got himself a van decked for mobile cleaning. He still works hard, but is making some serious money now.

Seen far more that just collect welfare checks, smoke pot and play videos or watch tv for 16 hours a day, while blaming "whomever" for their situation.

If you own a controlling percentage. Then yes it is. That is how you buy/control a publicly traded company.

You can buy 100% of shares and take it private, but that's overkill for what Microsoft wanted.

worker_person··on As weed gets more potent, teens are getting sick
Watching your child being content to work at Taco Bell for the next 50 years is not something to be proud of. Regardless of contentment.
worker_person··on As weed gets more potent, teens are getting sick
Yep my daughter had a friend introduce her. She spent 5 years on it. 100% dependent on it. Entire time swearing up and down it didn't affect her. Of course we could all tell.

Only when her finance had a psychotic breakdown and tried to kill everyone from it did she finally get off of it. Was 2 months before he didn't sound like an anime villain who was going to take over the world.

She keeps commenting at much more energy and less depressed she is, how she isn't always irritated at everything. She had no idea it was affecting her like that. For us we have our sweet loving and caring daughter back.

I trust MSFT to screw everyone over.

worker_person··on Returning to the office is costing you untapped talent
10 years ago. I spent 3 years going into an empty office to work with remote people. Then spent 4 years WFH for a remote company. Realized I had started thinking of co-workers as imaginary people that didn't really exist. They felt more like hallucinations.

Okay, screw this I need to go into an office. Did that for a year, loved it. Pandemic hit...

worker_person··on Potato diet community trial
Lost 50 pounds once eating Chef Boyardee. Smart, no. But it was measured portions. So counting calories was trivial.
worker_person··on Potato diet community trial
Autoimmune Protocol Diet is big in the autoimmune support place.

I've tried it myself and try to stick to it. When strict on it my horrific whole body burning pain stopped.

Not everyone, but many people are either cured, show no symptoms, or have reduced symptoms.

I've also noticed a lot of people that have never heard of it eventually rediscover it via trial and error on how their body responds.

Funny enough in contrast to the article. Potatoes (nightshades) are not allowed. Sweet potatoes are.

worker_person··on Neuroscientists create maps of the brain after traumatic brain injury
Yep. Suffered a mini stroke (TIA) a couple times a year since high school. Then it moved to multiple per week.

Imagine 2+2 becoming a difficult concept for a week, then you're doing recursive algorithms with the best of them.

Had one while I was white boarding. I understood the what I was explaining but I was writing pure gibberish.

Another while in a violin lesson. Instructor said play these 3 notes. I play a bunch of completely random ones. He's like umm, no, let me show you again. I play a new set of random notes. Repeat about 10 times. Finally he's like "is there something wrong with your head?"

Factor 5 Leiden (genetic high clotting) is about 5% of population. So not that low of odds. Took doctors 3 years to figure out I had this. I'm still fighting to get my kids tested.

I belong to some young stroke survivor groups. The range of disability is amazing. From full recovery in a few days after an event to never.
