worik··on Can the stockmarket swallow Anthropic, SpaceX and OpenAI?
> Do you use Grok multiple times per day?

No body who has a choice is using Grok

> Is Grok solving Erdos problems?

Mēh! At a slower rate than models a fraction of the price

worik··on Please Do Not Vibe Fuck Up This Software
> Just pin rsync's version

Very bad advice these days.

worik··on Please Do Not Vibe Fuck Up This Software
AI is a tool.

Tools are wielded

If you make a mistake wielding a tool, it is your mistake

worik··on Codex just found a "workaround" of not having sudo on my PC
I run mine on their own machine, without root access.

Currently a Raspberry Pi 5

I am very pleased with it.

My Idiot Savant Pet

worik··on Codex just found a "workaround" of not having sudo on my PC
> User namespaces significantly rise the risk of exploits

How?

worik··on Codex just found a "workaround" of not having sudo on my PC
> don't use windows

> A lot of us don’t get a choice

Wise advice and facts... the terrible state of our industry

worik··on Codex just found a "workaround" of not having sudo on my PC
I too have learnt to like systemd.

But what is the relevance here? In what way is it a replacement for docker?

worik··on Codex just found a "workaround" of not having sudo on my PC
That, in a nutshell, is why I do not install Docker
worik··on Separate the Cord from the Device
The plug between the cord and the device must be sturdy and meet regulatory standards

So it is expensive

It is cheaper to just attach the cord

That is the reason

worik··on The most unlikely school bag
I want one.

Gorgeous

worik··on Tech CEOs are apparently suffering from AI psychosis
No. Body. Knows.
worik··on Tech CEOs are apparently suffering from AI psychosis
> AI psychosis just a lazy term, much like Trump Derangement Syndrome.

It is how languages works. The written word is not a precise art.

Both those terms carry meaning, even if they abuse the term "derangement" and "psychosis"

worik··on DuckDuckGo search saw 28% more visits after Google said people love AI mode
Duckduckgo.com has a AI advisor too. I know not of Google's, I really do not give a soft hoot.

The DDG one is good, useful

"Greed is bad"
worik··on Texas woman arrested for Facebook post about town water quality
> Yea, an arrest on your record

What an awful data environment

The fact that you were arrested, charged even, if not convicted should not be discoverable by third parties

Uncivilised

worik··on Texas woman arrested for Facebook post about town water quality
> The city’s mayor, Dennis Haws, told reporters the pipes date back to the 1950s

How long should water pipes remain useful? Am I outrageously naive to think more than 75 years?

Perhaps they have been doing no maintenance....

worik··on It's time to talk about my writerdeck
Good idea

X-Windows and it's ilk are awesome software.

For a single purpose machine it is unnecessary

I've been doing the same thing in different domains

worik··on We're testing new ad formats in Search and expanding our Direct Offers pilot
There are other ways of making information available

The role of search

worik··on We're testing new ad formats in Search and expanding our Direct Offers pilot
Yes. Good points

Ads are useful, but to whom? Not often the consumer!

The benefits ads have to the consumer can be obtained other ways, like a well functioning search engine.

Imagine if Google used AI to improve search results rather than maximize the revenue from, and irritation by, ads

worik··on We're testing new ad formats in Search and expanding our Direct Offers pilot
Ditto me with Duckduckgo a long time ago
worik··on A Bipartisan Amendment Would End Police License Plate Tracking Nationwide
If you are driving around without a license plate, you have other (law enforcement) problems

In Aotearoa I noticed the same effect in tye early 1990s with "speed cameras", as we called them

It took six months, but the change in traffic flows was dramatic, and good.

worik··on Formal Verification Gates for AI Coding Loops
Sounds like the bleeding edge.

LLMs are tools, but unreliable

They can magnify the reach of a person, but not replace them

Having LLMs write the tools is the correct approach for magnifying the reach of a Dev Ops programmer

worik··on Tennessee man jailed 37 days for Trump meme wins settlement after lawsuit
Is privatising ethics enforcement like this a good idea?
worik··on Tennessee man jailed 37 days for Trump meme wins settlement after lawsuit
> Second problem I see is that this took 37 days to resolve

"Justice delayed is justice denied " is an important principle that appears to have been forgotten in the west

Central planning and agriculture don't mix.
worik··on Goodbye Visa and Mastercard: 130M Europeans switching to sovereign payment
> You cannot do a chargeback on iDeal,

Odd. How is a transaction reversed after a dispute?

worik··on Google changes its search box
Makes me sad. I recall the beginnings of Google, so hopeful so new.

Now they are a money printing corporate. I am sure there are still people there doing new and exciting things, but the Grey Suits have taken the reigns

They could have used AI to make that awesome simple sparse home page better. Fought off the SEO optimiser that made search so dire in the recent past

But no. They are doubling down on bling and crap. SEO is good for business.

"Do the right thing". Not even close

Makes me so sad.

worik··on I’ve joined Anthropic
This is true for all the UASanian frontier model owners

They are all going to get their lunch eaten by the Chinese.

In the USA with access to most of the world's capital, they've succumbed to the temptation of "bigger, faster, harder"

Whilst the Chinese, with enough capital only, have had to think.

The Chinese models are already miles ahead on cost/inference basis and will probably pass all the USAnian companies in five years

The age of UASnian engineering dominance are coming to an end.

Let's all hope she goes quietly - not at the moment
