wordpad25··on Elon Musk: "Don't advertise. Go f*** yourself"
It's so childish, it's like agreeing you lost an argument but then going "no you".
wordpad25··on Elon Musk: "Don't advertise. Go f*** yourself"
news on Elon is toxic, but he's a runner up for richest man in the world and leads a couple most prominent companies in the world... there is a lot to take interest in
wordpad25··on Henry Kissinger Has Died
> Those wars in Cambodia and Vietnam didn't further the interests of the US at all.

It's easy to judge history in hindsight. USA bombed the crap out of Japan during WW2, and Japan had amazing recovery.

Not to say that Cambodia was at all justified (or Japan for that matter), but that it's more complicated.

It's a lot easier to judge a person on objective things, like how effective they were at executing their policy.

wordpad25··on The birth and death of search engine optimization
If SEO was so easily gamed, GOOGLE competitors would’ve sidelined it by offering more relevant results.

This is clearly not the case. Google heavily prioritizes users actually finding what they are looking for.

wordpad25··on OpenAI's employees were given two explanations for why Sam Altman was fired
>People keep speculating

Your take isn't uncommon, only are missing the main point of your interpretation - that the board is fully incompetent if it was truly that petty of a reason to ruin the company.

It's not even that it's not a justifiable reason, but they did it without getting legal advice or consulting with partners and didn't even wait for markets to close.

Board destroyed billions in brand and talent value for OpenAI and Microsoft in a mid day decision like that.

This is also on Sam Altman himself for building and then entertaining such an incompetent board.

wordpad25··on After Boeing declines to pay up, ransomware group leaks 45 GB of data
That's kind of a softball, can easily be counted with "part costs vary a lot based on the market" or something like, regardless of cost we guarantee you this price point

No business wants to share it's internal costs, it's their prime competitive advantage

wordpad25··on Greg Brockman quits OpenAI
Well if for nothing else they are their biggest partner and investor
wordpad25··on Quitting the full-time poker scene
Poker is a great analogy for the market.

You don't make money by having amazing unique insight, you make money by finding soft players and milking them for money.

All the retail investors and day traders are the amateur players thinking they are decent but really are just getting milked

wordpad25··on Binance to terminate Russian ruble deposits
Sanctions alter free markets and are generally ineffective and only distort the markets as an efficient market hypothesis states the market will work around the sanctions.

Russia has rerouted it's exports and replaced it's imports. Their budget is healthy and making record profits due to high energy prices caused in part by sanctions.

I also disagree Russian civilians are somehow innocent. Their tax base supports the government. Russia is still a democracy and they elect their government so are liable for their actions.

wordpad25··on Elon Must Part 4 on Lex Friedman Podcast: War, AI, Aliens, Politics, Physics
Lex Friedman seems like the opposite of Joe Rogan. Lex worked on an actual PHD and has a healthy respect for sciences.

Lex also has an unhealthy skepticism about everything else, entertaining any absurd tales or conspiracies his guests spin.

wordpad25··on WeWork nears bankruptcy
Yeah in hindsight it's easy to act superior as if it was never going to work, but at least they tried something new, that's how all innovation happens
wordpad25··on Meta sued by states over harmful youth marketing
Social media is for socializing... If you don't enjoy socializing (stalking, drama everything), if you have no interest in those, of course you wouldnt join

Stats show people are inherently resistant to join any social media, until all their friends are already on there.

If none of your peers use social media actively or you don't keep in touch with large group of people, it wouldnt offer much value for you

wordpad25··on Meta sued by states over harmful youth marketing
Yeah lol

Research shows 100% of bullying is caused by humans and eliminating all human contact reduces bullying by 100%

Amazing!

wordpad25··on Meta sued by states over harmful youth marketing
Cultural stigma against mental health issues is extremely ubiquitous outside the US

This causes mental health issues to go unaddressed, but, ironically, it also helps in a way, because peer pressure certainly helps reinforce individual discipline to develop techniques to keep it together. Peer pressure is a very powerful motivator.

For example fat shaming is certainly bullying but it's also certainly effective at discouraging overeating

wordpad25··on What being rich in China looked like in 1, 1000, and 2000 AD
It has I remember it being a big deal

But because they have so many more people average standard of life is still much lower

wordpad25··on OpenAI Finally Allows ChatGPT Complete Internet Access
ChatGPT, Claude and prepexity are each $20/mo

Chatgpt4 seems most powerful but Claude offers unlimited context which can be used to summarize entire books

Prepexity can browse and summarize web

wordpad25··on Ask HN: Show me your half baked project
That's kind of interesting. Did you get any sponsors?
wordpad25··on Ask HN: Show me your half baked project
That's pretty cool. What LLMs do you currently support?
wordpad25··on Ask HN: Show me your half baked project
Maybe, scale the size of the code based on how long it takes to execute that section.

Would make it a cool way to find underperforming code.

wordpad25··on Show HN: This is what social media could be
Need some at a glance way to read the posts.

Manually clicking every flower to see what it says is a nightmare when on a typically social network it takes scrolling dozens of posts before finding something interesting you would read or engage with.

wordpad25··on ChatGPT – Dalle3 System Prompt
The coop thing is that because it's a simulation of what LLM thinks OS would behave like and not real OS, within it, if you were convincing enough and find just the right tricks, you could break laws of physics or logic, just like Neo in the Matrix
wordpad25··on Booking.com makes a fortune – so why is it leaving its bills to hotels unpaid?
Hotels always offer worse rates offline than online
wordpad25··on OpenAI's justification for why training data is fair use, not infringement [pdf]
One could easily argue derived work is sufficiently different from the original to avoid a violation.

ChatGPT doesn't just steal and slightly modify the original. It fully copies the style and feel, which aren't copyright protected.

You can't just change the color of Mikey Mouse, call him AI Mouse and be good, but you can certainly create a new Disney-style character without triggering copyright violations.

wordpad25··on 1.3B Worldcat scrape and data science mini-competition
It's like asking why wasn't X invented earlier.

Google and everyone else had no idea how successful LLMs could be until OpenAI did it.

wordpad25··on Intimacy does not scale (2021)
You min/max for engagement, but get a local max with negativity, so you increase your variability to find another peak
wordpad25··on We are beginning to roll out new voice and image capabilities in ChatGPT
Can you share the source code? What did you do to improve the latency?
wordpad25··on How Equifax Was Breached in 2017
Wasn't Equifax Chief of Security a Music major?

That was hilarious to read about...

wordpad25··on Building an economy simulator from scratch
psycohistory!
wordpad25··on Building an economy simulator from scratch
It's a common misconception about hedge funds that objective is to outperform market.

The objective is to maximize profit per unit of risk taken. If hedge fund made 20% less than market but took 50% less risk, that's a MASSIVE value proposition.

(now, one could argue they fail at that too, but that's more difficult to prove)

wordpad25··on We built an AI-powered Magic the Gathering card generator
What structured data support are you referring to? I'm out of the loop, did they add something new in the API?
