wordpad25··on Is anyone playing with the combination of generative AI and OpenCyc?
I don't understand why you need OpenCyc for this, you could just chain LLM for both.

I think it would outperform on any language task as language that isn't formal requires interpretation which LLMs excel at.

wordpad25··on Learning to Learn
that book seems to be very inline with cutting edge research on learning, thanks

book summary

"Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning" Summary:

Key Premise: Effective learning strategies differ from common study methods like rereading and cramming, which provide an illusion of mastery but lead to poor retention.

Main Learning Principles:

Retrieval Practice: Actively recalling information strengthens memory and makes learning more durable. Self-quizzing is more effective than passive review.

Spaced Repetition: Spacing out learning sessions over time leads to better retention than cramming.

Interleaved Practice: Mixing different types of problems or subjects during study sessions improves learning compared to studying one topic in blocks.

Elaboration: Explaining ideas in your own words and connecting them to existing knowledge improves understanding.

Generation: Attempting to solve a problem before being shown the solution enhances learning.

Reflection: Reviewing what you’ve learned and considering how it applies to your life strengthens learning.

Varied Learning: Learning in different contexts and environments makes the knowledge more adaptable and versatile.

Key Takeaways:

Rethink study habits: Active learning techniques outperform passive ones.

Learning is more effective when it's effortful—embrace challenges.

Long-term retention relies on consistent, spaced, and active engagement with material.

Asking a doctor to diagnose and treat a chronic condition from a list of symptoms is like asking a detective to solve a crime from a list of evidence.

There is A LOT of additional legwork and investigation required to get to the truth even if you're brilliant Sherlock Holmes (and most won't be).

The best they can practically do in the 10 minutes they spend on your case, is try to treat symptoms.

I wish more people understood this. Real change and requires engagement with established democratic institutions.

Businesses or the elite do not have more power, they are just more motivated to lobby both politicians and voters.

A single motivated dedicated individual could accomplish more than any million dollar marketing campaign.

Corruption or not a plitician is more likely to agree with a united position of large number of his constituents than any kind of bribe.

You are so right. People imagine everyone going to therapy to cope, but really it's being able to recognize triggers and adapt.

Everyone already does it in some ways - for example, you know you make mistakes when tired tired - you recognize you are tired this moment and decided to reschedule the important activity.

Therapy gives same tool - you recognize you are having an episode and take steps to avoid typical negative outcomes.

Profit gives incentive for development and competition. It also saves a ton of money for tax payers.

Mismanagement of these partnerships isn't representative of this type of deal structures in general. A butt load of public works are funded this way.

I fully agree with you.

My point on spectrum wasn't relating to free speech but rather free speech regulation.

Open discourse is universally recognized as a generally good thing for society.

So, we can try to embrace Free Speech ideals even as we grant our government right to censor some speech and draw (a somewhat arbitrary) line of what's allowed.

We've seen Russia, for example, abuse that power even though free speech is written into their constitution, they use that power to censor political speech and what they refer to as blasphemy, so we know this power can and has been abused but it's also possible, so, perhaps, you are right.

There is a large spectrum between total anarchy and totalitarian regime, so in the same way there is a spectrum in free speech.

wordpad25··on Is running a more efficient way to travel than walking?
I think the term you're looking for is endurance.

Endurance advantage is a big factor in many sports and offers a viable strategy.

The issue with your suggestion is that it's not uncommon for massive heavy athletes to also have excellent endurance too, so even if they may not catch you, they would still be the one stalking you.
