wonder_bread··on Nvidia GPU Cloud
Not really seeing a material difference between this and just using one of the available machine learning AMI's on EC2. Relatively anticlimactic
wonder_bread··on Square Could Pass Twitter in Value
That's very interesting, among my social circle (low 20's Northeast New England Area) Venmo has an implicit monopoly on the service. I doubt any of my non-cs friends have even heard of Square's offering.
wonder_bread··on Square Could Pass Twitter in Value
'Venmo' itself has become a verb rather than just a service so I doubt either of them have the necessary momentum to take these services to anything more than nominal levels of volume relative to the market lead
wonder_bread··on Google's CEO is increasingly boxed in by regulators, critics, and employees
If they still owned 51% of the company their respective net worth would make even Bezos seem paltry
wonder_bread··on Google's CEO is increasingly boxed in by regulators, critics, and employees
Headline is pretty clickbaity
wonder_bread··on Dropbox Professional
So a Squarespace/Wix replacement?
wonder_bread··on Elon Musk, ask me anything about BFR
Definitely a provocative comment that might not be correct but I don't think it deserved to be down-voted. Just because he's Elon doesn't mean he doesn't play his own manipulation games
wonder_bread··on Gluon – Deep Learning API from AWS and Microsoft
Do you think they would still be doing this if TF hadn't become the near de-facto ML software? Seems like more of a response to its rise than an actual research project
wonder_bread··on Gluon – Deep Learning API from AWS and Microsoft
Is this as much of a collusion attempt against TensorFlow as it seems? Or has this been a long time coming?
wonder_bread··on Citron thinks Shopify is like Herbalife
Pretty hilariously bad report. When they first came out with it the URL path said 'Spotify' instead of 'Shopify'
wonder_bread··on Dow Jones technical error spreads fake news story of Google acquiring Apple
Almost has to be a troll in the system who decided to prove a point
wonder_bread··on The Google Home Mini Is Google’s $49 Answer to the Echo Dot
It's unfortunate the amazing advances Google's been making with its ml software are being packaged up into a bunch of happenstance hardware offerings.
wonder_bread··on Amazon announces new, smaller Echo
I had the exact same thought as you two minutes ago if I'm honest and apparently that's on the way with the new pixel phone.

wonder_bread··on Amazon announces new, smaller Echo
You don't think they should be worried at all about the Echo platform?
wonder_bread··on Amazon announces new, smaller Echo
Glass was innovative and ahead of it's time but that being said it feels like Google (and Apple for that matter) are falling into the risky playbook of mirroring other companies' ideas and assuming their scale will take care of the rest
wonder_bread··on Amazon announces new, smaller Echo
Serious Question; Is Google ever going to get out of catch-up mode in this department?
wonder_bread··on AWS Pinpoint Launches Two-Way Text Messaging
What are some of the open source options?
wonder_bread··on AWS Pinpoint Launches Two-Way Text Messaging
Yes they are still using AWS entirely (as far as I've seen) in fact they've doubled down on their AWS commitment it seems by integrating with Lex and Connect.

Their stock isn't so hot right now but that's not terribly out of sorts for a relatively new company. Enterprise I've heard many stories about. Their commitment to starting with the developer is admirable though.

wonder_bread··on AWS Pinpoint Launches Two-Way Text Messaging
Doesn't bode well for Twilio that Amazon keeps rolling out these ecosystem-enhancing SMS features. They're still a standout solution for anybody who doesn't use AWS IMP but these features are getting a little too close for comfort
wonder_bread··on Apple blocking ads that follow users around web is 'sabotage', says industry
This is almost certainly a pro on the consumer end of things but ultimately how much of a win is this really? Facebook and Google will still be fine so if anything this further consolidates the information monopoly. I'm happy Apple did it, and I don't think the "Six major advertising consortia" are going to do themselves any favors by coming out guns blazing against them for this, but the problem is much deeper rooted than this.
wonder_bread··on Snap sold fewer than 42K Spectacles, down 35% in Q2
Same thing I've noticed, and even beyond that people still seem to feel the need to put a final layer of effort into their insta stories relative to Snap stories, I'd say Snap still has a definite role
wonder_bread··on Snap sold fewer than 42K Spectacles, down 35% in Q2
Were the Specs ever meant to be more than a hype vehicle though? Obv. if it had blown up into an international phenomenon Spiegel & Co. would have taken it but I feel like it was more just a power strut en route to their IPO to show that people are excited about their platform more so than "Big Brother's"
wonder_bread··on Facebook’s Onavo Gives Social-Media Firm Inside Peek at Rivals’ Users
I would argue most of Alexa's most import features are not free, doubleclick is still a cloak around the entire digital advertising industry that gives them access to actionable metrics of how websites are doing (i.e. maybe why they've pushed into job search recently).

One commonality among all of them is being marketed as a service for smaller-scale companies while having the double-edged sword on the backend that is most likely what they are really after

EDIT: smaller scale companies and individuals

wonder_bread··on Facebook’s Onavo Gives Social-Media Firm Inside Peek at Rivals’ Users
Sounds a lot like Amazon owning Alexa (the website service), Google owning double click, etc.
wonder_bread··on Boring Company to use Tesla’s technology for its tunnel project under LA
If Tesla 'merged' with SpaceX and Boring Co. on the public market you're talking about a company that could have a $100B mkt cap as soon as next year, the slight and continuing unofficial convergence of all of his companies is a bit odd
wonder_bread··on Snap Misses User-Growth Estimate as Facebook Copying Takes Toll
I still find that at least a quarter of the stories my friends post on Instagram are just their Snapchat usernames
wonder_bread··on Amazon paid just £15m in tax on European revenues of £19.5bn
The general point seems to be "large corporation doesn't pay its fair share of taxes". Something that seems to be more of a hot-button issue in Europe
wonder_bread··on Amazon paid just £15m in tax on European revenues of £19.5bn
I don't like being rude in comments sections but that's a pretty dumb comment to make, to be honest. I don't think the writer needs any help understanding how tax bills are formulated, it's just meant to state a point. (Which you would understand if you read the article before commenting)
wonder_bread··on Blue Apron Plans to Cut 24% of Staff Barely a Month After IPO
Title is absurdly click bait once you actually read a couple of articles about what they are actually doing
wonder_bread··on Elon Musk plans to build a Hyperloop himself
I understand the legalities of how they're separate, what I'm saying is if the "cross-fertilization" approach between the two companies proliferates to the point where they are material to each other's operations, what's to stop Starboard or some other activist investor group from launching a campaign against them?

Obviously, Elon would be against this, I'm not saying they would personally be for this decision, I'm saying if the market stops being as forgiving to Tesla as it is, could a group not gain significant voting power and push this against them?
