wolvoleo··on We’re forgetting what darkness feels like
Huh weird, I wonder where they get the light from that reflects from them. The moon?

It wouldn't be possible for them to get direct sunlight that low during the middle of the night. Unless you are at very high latitudes in summer.

wolvoleo··on We’re forgetting what darkness feels like
LEO satellites only cause problems around dusk and dawn, when they're exposed to light but the surface is not.

Because they're so close to the earth's surface it doesn't happen all night because they'll be in darkness too.

wolvoleo··on Dots: Always-on agents
Not really. I use cloud AI a bit for development but I don't put personal data in it. That only runs on my local systems.

I also swap all the time for whoever is cheapest

wolvoleo··on European industry is doing better than you may think
Yeah those bazars as they call them. They're even owned and operated by Chinese usually.

A lot of the stuff is comparable to ones in more upmarket shops because really it's the same stuff anyway. Just with less markup

wolvoleo··on PipePipe: NewPipe hard fork implementing SponsorBlock
Ugh, sponsors are not ethical at all. See how losers like LTT were pushing PayPal honey that hijacked other people's affiliate codes. They were told about it and did nothing.

No thanks I'm not using anything without sponsorblock.

Luckily there's many newpipe forks with it. There's pipepipe but also tubular and a few others.

It would be nice if newpipe would just support sponsorblock though and leave the decision to the user, like grayjay also does.

But these days you just press pause when you feel like it, so you don't have to let someone else pick the moment for you.
wolvoleo··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
That doesn't count the distribution network for actually getting that energy there. This is the main problem right now. Right now in Holland even people wanting to build a house are blocked because the energy networks are full.

And it's not the only country with that issue.

And charging infra doesn't last longer than the car, standards are still changing a lot, and getting faster charge modes that put more burden on distribution nets.

wolvoleo··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
Here in Europe the apartment ratio is much higher though.
wolvoleo··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
It's not really if you factor in the upgrade of the distribution network. This is what Holland is struggling against (also a result of a really bad decision of 15 years ago on not investing in its upgrade).
wolvoleo··on Zelensky says Russia has widened attacks to hit Ukraine's data centres
Data centers in space would be well protected from anyone but nation state level actors though. I always wonder if this is the real reason musk wants to do this. If AI will displace as many jobs as some people predict I'm sure many datacenters would be the target of angry pitchfork mobs.

Haha... We used to have this joke in Holland. Our former secretary of justice made a dirty underhanded deal with a top criminal for more than a million and when it came to light he pretended to "have lost the receipt"

The affair was not too long after the Snowden and Manning cablegate revelations so there were a lot of memes going around saying: "NSA helps minister retrieve lost receipt"

Norway is super rich because of oil money though. Easy to do the right thing for the environment when you are loaded with cash. And most of it gained through fossil fuel exploitation.

In the netherlands it's much harder to upgrade the distribution network, right now in many places it's not even possible anymore to build new housing because the network is full and it will take at least a decade to fix it.

wolvoleo··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
I doubt it will happen in the short term. The number of chargers isn't really the problem, the energy distribution network is, and that is only increasing with faster chargers.

But I don't want a cheaper car anyway, I want better public transport.

wolvoleo··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
In America maybe. Here in Europe it's not really viewed as a birthright like that. And don't forget, America artificially created a dependency on the car with its city design, for economic reasons.

And no I don't think anything corporate-owned is the answer, as corporations are the main reason we're in this mess.

But like I said it is my personal opinion. The challenges we face as humanity, like pollution (not just global warming), and infinite growth can't be solved without some big changes. Quick fixes just won't do it which is why we're not actually solving anything.

I don't think it will happen though. There's too many vested interest in just burning the world until it's gone.

wolvoleo··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
I have those things in my house but it's all local using home assistant and no vendor can monitor it. I can access it remotely but only by vpn.

I'd want the same for my car if I had one. No manufacturer remote access. Any 5G module in it I would remove. Unfortunately the EU mandates ecall now but I'd just put that back in for the yearly car test.

wolvoleo··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
No it's not. If you live in a flat where are you going to charge the thing? Around here there's almost no charging points and the ones that are there are constantly occupied.

I gladly don't own a car but if I did it would be an ICE for sure.

wolvoleo··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
Ehhh we should support them otherwise they will come to kill us all again?

No, if they do that it's 100% on them.

And the German auto industry is really corrupt. See what they did at Volkswagen scamming the system and then refusing to own up to it.

I don't buy any cars anymore and if I did it wouldn't be German.

Personally I think it's time for the personal car to disappear anyway. Even an EV still pollutes a lot, it's not just about CO2.

wolvoleo··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
Except they don't really. If you're in a convo there only needs to be one user who doesn't have ADP turned on and uses iCloud. And all your data is leaked.

It should be possible to force your messages to be excluded from backup even by recipients. Otherwise it's just for show when it comes to real life.

wolvoleo··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
Neoliberalism is strongly tied to capitalism, but it is more than that, it's a strong belief that capitalism is the only possible way and that it works best with no restrictions on it.

What we need to do is restrict capitalism. Some capitalism is ok, I'm not advocating for a pure communist system, but there needs to be a balance between both. Since the fall of the soviet union, the balance has swayed wayy too much in favour of the unlimited capitalism option, whatever you call it.

And no the system isn't really the same, or at least it wasn't. Interest-free loans were pretty common and when I studied the government even provided them as student loans. Unfortunately they don't anymore.

wolvoleo··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
Well it's just American society that really has this so deeply ingrained that it's deemed irreversible.

Europe only turned neoliberal a few decades ago and only some countries are deeply into it like the Netherlands. Before the 90s we were much more socialist and can go back that way.

China also isn't neoliberal. They're good at playing the capitalist game but they're not afraid to pull the handbrake where needed and they are going good things for green energy.

wolvoleo··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
Oh I didn't find it, I have to say I don't use google maps very much. I normally use OSMAnd only. But most businesses don't bother updating their opening hours on openstreetmap.
wolvoleo··on Claude Opus 5.5
Thanks!
wolvoleo··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
Yes, a lot of that is just waiting for the active parts to get less 'hot' though. But yes it's incredibly expensive and it's only going to get more so as we start caring more about pollution and proliferation.
wolvoleo··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
The issue is not only climate change. More consumption means more consumer goods, more resource extraction, more transport, more waste

We have huge environmental problems ranging from ecosystem simplification, microplastics, etc. The answer is not to keep consuming as we are. We really have to stop the neoliberal system that's based on ever increasing growth and externalisation of environmental impact.

wolvoleo··on Meta VR Glasses
No I didn't. During the time when it was required to couple one I just made one with a fake name. But since that passed i decoupled it again and deleted the Facebook one.
wolvoleo··on Meta VR Glasses
You don't need to use a real name on a meta headset. It was decoupled from Facebook years ago.
wolvoleo··on Meta VR Glasses
I've never needed to submit any ID?

I think the software kept getting better except for the latest UI redesign intended to mimic Apple which is indeed terrible. I hate the heavy use of double clicking on the controllers. The older UI was better (though even before this they constantly redesigned it every 6 months or so)

But they've only improved things over time. The quest 1 shipped without passthrough or hand tracking. By the end of it's support it had both. The quest 2 and 3 also continue to receive new features like higher frame rates, keyboard view etc.

wolvoleo··on Claude Opus 5.5
Yeah I wonder what real world feedback is though. I'm not taking anthropic's word for granted, after all they also deemed 5.0 the best ever when it came out.

I don't have much time to do checks so I'll just stay on 4.8 till feedback improves

wolvoleo··on Claude Opus 5.5
Yup same question here
wolvoleo··on Claude Opus 5.5
Is it finally getting better than opus 4 though? That's what I really wonder
