wolpoli··on NanoClaw moved from Apple Containers to Docker
The code is always generated using the latest LLM, ensuring that it takes advantage of the latest architectures and programming language features.
wolpoli··on Keep Android Open
At this point, I wouldn't recommend Android other than enjoying the much steeper discount with the headset. For me, the only thing that is keeping me on Android is easier access to commas on the keyboard.
wolpoli··on Skip is now free and open source
While many hobbyists developer market, like the hobbyist graphic design market, pirated their tools, the corporate market did paid for their tools.

The issue here is that they the developers aren't convincing their companies to pay for libraries now, partly because a lot of the tools are now free.

wolpoli··on The recurring dream of replacing developers
In the face of productivity increase and lower barrier of entry, other professionals move to capture the increase in productivity for their own members and erect barriers to prevent others from taking their tasks. In IT, we celebrate how our productivity increase benefited the broader economy, how more people in other roles could now build stuff, with the strong belief that employment of developers and adjacent roles will continue to increase and how we could get those new roles.
wolpoli··on Releasing rainbow tables to accelerate Net-NTLMv1 protocol deprecation
My bad. Still not sure which business unit is paying for their payroll.
wolpoli··on Releasing rainbow tables to accelerate Net-NTLMv1 protocol deprecation
> Consulting business? I was under the impression (from Google Reader) that if users aren’t in the millions, then they’ll kill the project. How could they also run a high-touch consultancy?!

Google also has the Project Zero which doesn't fit into Google business culture either. I wonder if Mandiant is paying for their payroll.

wolpoli··on ChatGPT is getting ads. Sam Altman once called them a 'last resort.'
Sadly, ads on Google used to be fenced off too. Then they slowly evolve to look more and more like part of the search result. I expect the same to happen here.
wolpoli··on The next two years of software engineering
Just to add to the point: no code web site makers have already incorporated AI to simplify marketing tasks like drafting copies/blogs/emails.
wolpoli··on AI is a business model stress test
Tailwind plus is available for one time payment that provides lifetime access to current and future components. With AI cutting off the flow for new buyers, revenue shrivels up much quicker than what it would've been if it was a recurring subscription.
wolpoli··on A faster heart for F-Droid
A lot of people here are used to working for companies with a larger infrastructure budget.
wolpoli··on Some Epstein file redactions are being undone
Black square vs redaction tool difference is well known if someone's job involves redacting PDF or just working with PDF. It's most likely that additional staffs were pulled in and weren't given enough training.
wolpoli··on Icons in Menus Everywhere – Send Help
I never said that. However, I think the entire industry ended up using monochrome icons due to aesthetic, and many practical reasons.
wolpoli··on CM0 – A new Raspberry Pi you can't buy
In short, it's a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 designed to be embedded into a finished device.
wolpoli··on Icons in Menus Everywhere – Send Help
Color icons needs to done twice - once for light mode and again for dark mode.

It is the reason for removing colors and shadings from all icons.

wolpoli··on After Windows Update, Password icon invisible, click where it used to be
Windows 10 2004 itself has been out of support for 4 years. At some point, they have to drop code that's maintaining compatibility with obsoleted older version of Windows.
wolpoli··on Reinventing how .NET builds and ships (again)
> Odd numbers get 18 months of support/patches

The recently fixed the friction with odd number releases by providing 24 months of support.

wolpoli··on CBP is monitoring US drivers and detaining those with suspicious travel patterns
They just might write a law that makes the act of publicly disseminating travel data for future and past official's illegal.
wolpoli··on Red Alert 2 in web browser
There were a few patches to RA2 through, so the code clearly exists for a bit of time post completion.
wolpoli··on AirPods libreated from Apple's ecosystem
Apple is a promoter member of the Bluetooth standard organization for a while now, so it could submit that as an enhancement.
wolpoli··on AI's Dial-Up Era
The personal computing era happened partly because, while there were demands for computing, users' connectivity to the internet were poor or limited and so they couldn't just connect to the mainframe. We now have high speed internet access everywhere - I don't know what would drive the equivalent of the era of personal computing this time.
wolpoli··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
The story was that they had to use an angle grinder to get in.
wolpoli··on From M1 MacBook to Arch Linux: A month-long experiment that became permanenent
A few years ago, I compared the trackpad on a ThinkPad T14 and a T14s and found that while on paper they are similar, the T14s has noticeably less friction with better tracking accuracy. I'll put blames on the PC vendors for playing around with their trackpad to sell higher end machines.
wolpoli··on Rethinking DOM from first principles
The market seems incapable of producing a modern VB like development environment for the web. I have theories, but still unsure why it is like that. However, we do have a bunch of zero code tools companies that locks your logic into their ecosystem and charges quite a bit of money every month.
wolpoli··on Marines now have an official drone-fighting handbook
Also, drones are currently being flown by soldiers in fpv goggles so swarm is not very practical. It will change once we have swarm software and there is a need for it.
wolpoli··on The HTML Hobbyist
WordPress isn't just for blogs and I think it might fit your use case for documenting a set of API endpoint. There is likely a free swagger plugin in WordPress that would help you, although I hadn't really looked.

Other than that, you could look at using a static site generator like MkDocs or Docusaurus. It'll generate a site of HTML pages, and you could either manually upload them to your host, or you could set up an automation that updates your host when you merge changes into git.

I think my response illustrates another problem with modern tools compared to the 90s - there isn't any single tool that edits HTML/CSS and upload them. You now have to glue together several tools.

wolpoli··on Show HN: Windows 7 GUI for the web
I hadn't read anyone talk about how UI peaked at Windows 3.1 through. Perhaps most people just start their desktop computing journey with 95.
wolpoli··on It's time for modern CSS to kill the SPA
Honest question: Where are the places with low-bandwidth internet? Are we talking about cruise ships and satellites internet use cases?
wolpoli··on Why MIT switched from Scheme to Python (2009)
I took Scheme for my second programming course, after C++. I think Scheme is simpler to understand. It also allowed students to explore various concepts that weren't available in C++. I enjoy the course.

But since I never took compiler theories and other courses on programming language, I never bumped into many of those concepts again except for those where modern languages adopted the same feature, and I ended up having to relearn them anyway. Hence, I would also argue that these days, most students would have been better served starting with a practical language.

wolpoli··on Intel to boost gross margins – new products must deliver 50% gross profit
This is the type of thinking that got Intel to sell their arm CPU product line.
wolpoli··on Don’t use “click here” as link text (2001)
Articles in the 90s would suggest webmasters to use "click here" as link text to let users know that a hyperlink is clickable. The advice kind of make sense since hypertext was new back then and users need that little bit of help to navigate.
