wmlive··on Windows 11's new installer has a game to play whilst you wait
Back in 1994 or so, the standard installation routine of SuSE Linux offered playing tetris on another virtual console while waiting for the installation to finish. Still being used to flaky DOS 6.22 combined with Windows 3.1 on my i486 machine, I was completely blown away.
wmlive··on [dead]
Unfortunately, the principle of 'form follows function' has been largely deprecated on the rather enshittified web. HN is an exception from this disturbing trend and thus a joy to use. Can't imagine any UI more straighfroward than the current default one. Thanks for that!
wmlive··on The consequence of not offering classes on IQ and human intelligence
Instead of learning about IQ and intelligence, the more instructive approach is to enlighten oneself about what constitutes ignorance and stupidity. Being able to relate to the resulting insights is the first step to understand what intelligence might actually be.

Apart from Darling there is, of course, the venerable GNUstep development environment that allows porting MacOSX apps natively to Linux and related systems. See https://gnustep.github.io for details.
wmlive··on Ask HN: Why are there no open source projects that focus on making you money?
Another thing most people appear to involuntary ignore: Free Software (or Open Source) allows anyone to benefit from excellent computational functionality without the implicit need having to invest any money into the basic goodness of superior free software we grew acustomed to over the decades.

Free Software is about the money you don't need and don't have to spend. Money that doesn't need to be spent also doesn't need to be made, at the same time saving you the one thing that is much more valuable and scarce than anything else: Your very own life's time.

The best money that can be made is the one that doesn't need to be spent and therefore doesn't require giving away one's most precious limited life time to someone else's benefit.

wmlive··on Ask HN: Why are there no open source projects that focus on making you money?
When worlds collide...

Money is just an intangible facility to acquire real goods of tangible value and, being only of intermediary validity, has no intrinsic value in itself.

Free Software (or Open Source) is real tangible value provided by and to its users without any intermediary detours such as money. Free Software is priceless intrinsic value by and in itself.

No need for steenkin' mohnay.

wmlive··on Ask HN: How to Build an LLM of the Buddha?
The whole point of Buddhism is to become a Buddha and not waste any effort in the idolization of an imagined external Buddha, be it in image or scripture. This is a matter beyond words or mental believe. So what is the point of an LLM'ification of Buddha/Buddhism?

Since it isn't very obvious when superficially browsing the web pages just the remark that this is based on the GNUstep development framework according to https://www.sogo.nu/support/faq/how-do-i-compile-sogo.html . This is propbably a testament for the maturity of GNUstep.

wmlive··on Ask HN: How do you discover what you're passionate about?
Most generic advice: Start by excluding what you are not passionate about until that which remains has been uncovered. The remains in itself will most probably not be signaling anything reminiscient of passion at first. But once you dedicate yourself to it wholeheartedly, the passion you wish for will eventually appear within yourself. If it doesn't, start again as outlined in the beginning, in a constant cycle. The cycles will eventually diminish and become less and less. Doing is the way to go.
wmlive··on Websurf: GNUStep web browser based on Netsurf
During my tests after initial installation it didn't prove to be very stable, unfortunately. But then again, it hasn't been advertised as being stable and is still very much work in progress.

This is a port of C based Netsurf ( https://www.netsurf-browser.org/ ) whose modular core allows it to be ported to other toolkits. According to the Netsuf website there are frontends for Amiga, Atari, BeOS, Framebuffer, GTK, RiscOS, and even Windows. Debian contains a GTK+ and a framebuffer variant of it in its repositories.

Websurf is thus not a new application written from the gound up in Objective-C but rather a port of Netsurf to the GNUstep GUI framework.

wmlive··on Ask HN: Would you use a service to unfollow everyone on your social media?
Once having used an extension named "Unfollow everyone on facebook at once" proved to be a very effective way to cut down the amount of pointless stuff on FB. Apparently, the extension was too effective and successful to stay unpunished:

https://techstory.in/facebook-quashed-chrome-extension-that-...

I stumbled over it back then due to the unavoidable Streisand effect and happily so. Combined with "Social Fixer" (see https://socialfixer.com for information), this made FB much more bearable.

Judging by it's CRX id, the code is still available via https://extpose.com/ext/pijkodjelolnmbehifeokihlodnajela/en (look for github on the page).

wmlive··on Boot legacy PCs from NVMe storage
»This project allows old x86 computers using a classic BIOS to boot from modern NVMe storage attached via PCI(e). It's a heavily modified version of iPXE (which usually allows for booting from the network), but instead of the network, this code uses a port of the SeaBIOS NVMe implementation to talk to a local NVMe drive.«
wmlive··on Distribution Release: Window Maker Live 0.96
Because i can. A standard Debian install doesn't provide the software we prefer because it appears to mainly focus on end user type desktops instead of providing a well equipped Unix toolbox. It's just great to be able installing a system that already has included all the nice tools and utilities we rely on since almost 30 years. And Window Maker is a good enough environment to run terminal emulator windows.
wmlive··on Distribution Release: Window Maker Live 0.96
The associated repo is here: http://wmlive.rumbero.org/repo/

It even contains slightly more than three packages.

A distribution is much more than just the superficial aspect of its primary GUI. So dig a bit deeper first.

Might be a good idea to first have a closer look at the things questioned instead of being led astray by just a few few random screenshots...
