"In the past, requests went out to a hosted execution service."

They were outsourcing to another company so there's plenty of room for overhead to creep in.

wmf··on Google ending ChromeOS support two years early
The point is that kids can't break the OS.
wmf··on Who Killed Paulina Borsook's Career?
Often they don't and it's kind of the point. You could go by Rich, Richie, Rick, Ricky, Dickie... if you choose to call yourself Dick, you know you're going to cause some amount of snickering and you're doing it on purpose.

Also I remember men called him Richard Feynman but a lot of women called him Dick. That's sending a different message.

wmf··on Ask HN: Is strong anti-AI sentiment psyops
Artists and authors genuinely believe their work is being stolen by AI. That part isn't a psyop.

There are a couple of data centers that are causing real water, noise, or pollution problems and it doesn't help that one of them is run by Elon Musk.

The chip shortage and resulting price increases are also very real.

And AI is not profitable. There probably is a bubble that will bankrupt some companies (maybe not the ones you've heard of).

When you mix all these facts with pre-existing skepticism of capital and corporate power you get the backlash. It's exaggerated and spinning out of control, but it's rooted in reality.

wmf··on Anthropic's IPO prospectus shows AI vision, surging costs
I would assume clouds count as resellers not customers.

wmf··on World Labs Is Joining AMD
If the ROCm team can't get enough compute it doesn't bode well for World Labs.
wmf··on Nvidia wants to put a watchdog chip next to every AI agent
It has a separate address space separated by PCIe so even escaping the hypervisor won't give access to DPU memory.
wmf··on OpenAI still doesn't seem to have a handle on all of its rogue AI activity
I see we're doing the "put Sam Altman in jail already" thing again, so y'all may be interested in some comments from law professor Orin Kerr on the topic: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49882566
wmf··on Microsoft drops Copilot+ branding from its new laptops
MS required the NPU to run local language models and the models are used for various AI features like live captions.
wmf··on Oral history of John Chowning, inventor of FM synthesis [video]
This guy should have invented file permissions.
wmf··on Ember-1
Obviously this research was done before 6.0 Sol and Opus 5.5 came out. Your point stands that the frontier moves quickly and small gains can be eclipsed quickly.
wmf··on What is the size of Yemen? (2024)
A bunch of countries are suspected of undercounting their population because so many people are living "off the grid" or deliberately overcounting to get more funding. Probably some of the cases are real and some are just conspiracy theories.
wmf··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
In most cases LVT would be the same or lower than current property taxes. Only empty lots would pay more.
wmf··on Banks and Credit Unions to Team Up Against Apple Pay Fees
A possible compromise is to allow Apple Pay to be a monopoly as long as it doesn't charge any fees.
wmf··on Classified estimates show the NSA is paying billions to test AI models
Claude loves snitching though.
wmf··on Classified estimates show the NSA is paying billions to test AI models
The people abusing Flock are police officers.
wmf··on Classified estimates show the NSA is paying billions to test AI models
Humans seem like the weakest link in surveillance to me. Recent Flock data confirms this.
wmf··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
They seem to not be counting the $1B of GPUs on either side, making the difference pretty small. They also think launching 200 racks of equipment into space will cost $5M.
wmf··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
A dozen billionaires already left California.
wmf··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
My understanding is that LVT would be lower than current property taxes, so it should be viewed as a tax cut for landlords not an increase.
wmf··on Is A.I. Above the Law?
The hacks probably fall under negligence not CFAA but the larger point stands that companies are always responsible for everything they do.
wmf··on Is A.I. Above the Law?
The flip side of this is that fixing the sandboxes should only delay the Singularity by a month or so.
wmf··on Is A.I. Above the Law?
On this topic I'd believe HN before the New Yorker.
wmf··on Linux support is coming to Snapdragon X2 series
It's called USB4 now.
wmf··on Linux support is coming to Snapdragon X2 Series
KVM works this time. For the rest you need to calibrate your expectations against mainstream laptops not RMStops.
wmf··on Why Omarchy Exists
Ubuntu was curated by Mark Shuttleworth for years. GNOME OS and KDE Linux are also fairly curated. It's not clear that DHH's curation of Omarchy actually created a better distro.
