wmboy··on Lavabit abruptly shuts down
So... there would be market for a secure email service that ran on a ship/vessel that was permanently in the middle of international waters?

(might have to have multiple vessel's for redundancy purposes)

wmboy··on Apple Developer Website Update
> ...but credit-cards are the big one you have to keep in plaintext. If you want to bill the card without asking for the number to be reentered, there's no way to avoid storing the number and expiration date.

Not necessarily, if you're using a payment gateway that supports token billing...

wmboy··on What Is It Like To Have a Photographic Memory?
> A photographic memory simply mean its easier for you to remember images than, say, sounds, text, etc.

I think you're mistaken http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eidetic_memory

wmboy··on Why I Still Use a Dumb Phone
I thought the purpose of having a 'dumb' phone would be to simplify things, not carry around multiple gadgets!

Also, taking a photo with an iPhone is very quick. Press home button, swipe up and you're ready to go. Arguably faster than a lot of pocket cameras (plus, are you really going to carry a pocket camera with you everywhere you go???).

wmboy··on Clickbank order details in plain view
This is not true, I used to work in the industry and you can use a hosted credit card solution (where you transfer customers to a secure payment page) without needing PCI compliance.

If it were correct, and the card holder name needed to be secure, the company I worked at would not have received level 1 PCI compliance. The solution sends back the truncated card number, expiry date and the full card holder name.

Of course I'm assuming the banks wouldn't want you to make that data public, but you are allowed to store it without needing to be PCI compliant.

CVV code is another matter, under no circumstances are you allowed to store it, unless you're a level 1 compliant payment processor.

wmboy··on Clickbank order details in plain view
PCI is designed to protect credit card fraud, not customer's address information. Banks don't care about the risk of identify theft, but rather credit card fraud.
wmboy··on Ask HN: Advice on how to best spend $3,000
You could start by spending $50-$100 on a nice WordPress theme to slap on the front end. Spend money on a designer when you've got some initial paying customers.
wmboy··on Breeze is closing on August 1
According to them it's not the same product (remember listening to a Mixergy interview where it was stressed that they were different - different code, solving the PM problem in a different way).

Edit: just found the product page for Basecamp Classic (http://basecamp.com/classic), man it looks pretty ugly!

wmboy··on Breeze is closing on August 1
Can't really call them a one hit wonder, the new Basecamp has taken off and IMO is better than the original Basecamp.
wmboy··on Breeze is closing on August 1
Sure, but in this case 'forever' should at least mean a few years... surely?
wmboy··on Dora, Diego, SpongeBob and Other Viacom Shows Leave Netflix
I'm doing everything I can to legitimately pay for the service. If it is "illegal" then it's absurd and just shows you how dumb the laws are regarding digital movies/music.
wmboy··on Dora, Diego, SpongeBob and Other Viacom Shows Leave Netflix
I live in New Zealand... there's no other way to subscribe to Netflix.
wmboy··on Dora, Diego, SpongeBob and Other Viacom Shows Leave Netflix
My kids have just started watching Diego (as in last night), so it seems the licensing deal is still active in the Canadian Netflix library?

Unblock-us.com is the way to go, costs $5/month and means you can access all of the Netflix libraries (US, Canada, UK and others).

wmboy··on How to retire in 10 years
If you get bored after 2 weeks and want to work, then go find a job... Retiring in your 30's or 40's is probably better called financial independence.
wmboy··on Good sleep, good learning, good life
Hmm perhaps I'm just a cynic, but if health care providers are coming out with such garbage as discouraging breast feeding, it's got to make you wonder whether they want people to be sicker!
wmboy··on Good sleep, good learning, good life
I'm pretty sure caffeine increases stress levels which is what you want, if you need to start focusing on your work.

Of course, too much stress is bad for you, which is why you shouldn't have multiple cups a day...

wmboy··on Good sleep, good learning, good life
Doctors are usually learned people who have a lot of helpful (and often lifesaving) advice.

But the fact is, being a doctor doesn't make you an expert in nutrition or diet, and it certainly doesn't make you an expert in things like co-sleeping.

I'm pretty sure the only deaths you'll have these days as a result of co-sleeping is when one of the parents smoked, took drugs or was obese (and usually a combination).

wmboy··on Sublime Text 3 Beta
I'm not trying to validate the Kickstarter idea, but thought I'd add that making it open source doesn't mean they would have to stop selling it.

WooThemes is an obvious example of a company that makes a heap of money selling open source software.

wmboy··on How I Made $600K in the iOS Education Market (2012 update)
This is why I think free healthcare actually promotes entrepreneurship. I have a family and run my own business in New Zealand and have no concerns over healthcare as it'll all be covered by the government.
wmboy··on Ask HN: Service to add 'getting started' wizard to your web app
Thanks Taurus looks good, pricing is pretty reasonable though I'd like to see at least some sort of analytics or A/B split testing features.
wmboy··on Ask HN: Service to add 'getting started' wizard to your web app
Thank you! Not only is that a viable option for us, I was also able to find the original HN post:

Turns out it was called http://tourmyapp.com

wmboy··on Netflix signs licensing agreement with Disney
FYI, unblock-us.com is a handy service that lets you easily switch between the different Netflix libraries (US, Canada and UK). It costs $5 per month and is well worth it!

(You only require one Netflix account).

wmboy··on The YC VC Program
$80k is guaranteed, but it's not stopping other investors to make million dollar investments if it's recognised as being the next Microsoft.
wmboy··on Still waking up at 5am to code?
8-9 hours sleep? Try just sleeping less... (you might even live longer as a result)!

wmboy··on What My Son's Disabilities Taught Me About 'Having It All'
Well, I'd already read (and enjoyed) this article outside of Hacker News, so when I saw it on the home page I was quite surprised as the article has no reference to technology, start ups or business in general.

With that said (& in case I was misunderstood) I have no issue with it being posted!

wmboy··on What My Son's Disabilities Taught Me About 'Having It All'
Quite off topic, but well worth reading nonetheless.

So often we live out lives with the subconscious belief that we'll be happy when ...[insert big goal]. The reality is though, if we can't learn to be happy with our imperfect lives as they are today, we'll never be happy.

wmboy··on Google buys Wildfire
I had no idea this was a New Zealand founded company until I saw this as news on the NZ Herald website.

Great to see a Kiwi tech startup seeing this kind of success!

wmboy··on Try iOS: iPhone App Development Course
Yeah, their Rails for Zombies series is one of the best options for learning beginner Ruby on Rails.
wmboy··on This page crashes Internet Explorer, even version 9 and 10.
So I just checked in IE9 and it works fine...

(using 9.0.8112.16421)

wmboy··on How 30 days without social media changed my life
Yeah, I'm thinking of deleting the FB app on my phone. It's just a temptation to constantly check what's happening and stop being present with whoever I'm around.
