wkcamp··on Learning to Read at Age 41
Absolutely beautiful. I think these stories are also a way to balance our feelings with the conflict we face/hear of. We'll always be hearing of/facing harsh issues prevalent in the world, and we need to maintain our hope. Stories like this one help us do just that.
wkcamp··on Moving a team from Scala to Golang
"Scala has a lot of rough edges already around getting a build environment, SBT pain, IDE environment pain" I never had this issue with Scala. Maybe because I'm an independent dev, but regardless, I had scala, sbt, emacs, and g8 ready within 5-10 minutes.
wkcamp··on Show HN: Combo, the Simple Python Package Manager
It's all good. So in my experience, I had issues getting my development environment up to speed at work. We had dependency files, but weren't well maintained. I made Combo so that a Dev-team could easily share a file with other workers and bring their engineers' dev environments up to speed in a few minutes. Furthermore, open source projects could distribute their "Combofiles" with ease, grow their contributor base, and focus more on development than menial issues.

Besides, the main goal of Combo is to eventually join "pip" or take on all the capabilities of pip.

wkcamp··on Show HN: Combo, the Simple Python Package Manager
To those who look at this, this is my first "official" Python project. I really need help with test suites and whatever. But alas, the package manager works well enough. All feedback is appreciated.
wkcamp··on College students are now smoking more pot than cigarettes
This last sentence is such an important message. Your use with substances--even if they have benefits--should never take over your life.
wkcamp··on NASA announces New Horizon's next destination
Well to play it safe would give them the chance to see another object in space that's millions of miles away (and one which we probably won't see up close for another 10-15 years). I don't know how much longer New Horizon's will be still functional though.
wkcamp··on Uber hires two security researchers to improve car technology
Just to add on, think of how much more centralized the company's model becomes. A self-driving car probably won't depend on third-party drivers and Uber can start intaking a lot more cash from its services (of course, maintenance and such costs may increase).
wkcamp··on Why It's Safe for Founders to Be Nice
If someone could answer, when a startup starts to exponentially gain traffic (and the server costs start going up), how does the startup maintain their servers and purchase new instances (say the startup is running EC2 ones)? Will the startup start taking on debt or will it look for funding or both?
wkcamp··on Nobel winner Stiglitz: “American Dream is a myth”
Part of the issue is that many people are ready to perceive themselves as correct before perceiving another as correct. So the U.S. divides into numerous positions with everyone casting blame on others and making unsubstantiated generalizations. And progress then becomes elusive.
wkcamp··on FCC Fines Smart City $750K for Blocking Wi-Fi
Well isn't this just a slap on the wrist? Wouldn't it make sense for the FCC to increase fines to deter other companies from malicious practices?
wkcamp··on Black Hat USA 2015: The full story of how that Jeep was hacked
I'm sure many engineers overlook the "guy who knows a guy" situation. The whole car itself is one giant system that works in unison; practically everything in that car IS connected. Which obviously means everything is accessible one way or another. Isolation is not really isolation as isolation more than likely depends on something.
wkcamp··on 60 years ago: The famous Boeing 707 prototype barrel roll over Lake Washington
How quickly would the 707 drop in altitude while doing a barrel roll? And did he need a minimum speed to be able to successfully do it (sort of like an escape velocity)?
wkcamp··on Watch: Richard Feynman on why he can't tell you how magnets work
From what I recall, Feynman was an excellent explainer of the abstruse concepts (I.e. Feynman diagrams). And I think most physicists strive to make that simple explanation. Here, Feynman talks more conversationally rather than bogging down the questioner in incoherent jargon.

As a side note, I believe he was teased by other physicists (notable ones) for his New York accent.

wkcamp··on Clearing your browser history can be deemed 'obstruction of justice' in the U.S
Not that I agree with their use but, I think a lot of these sensationalist titles are springing up to draw attention to something(erasing browser history) we would normally not give a second glance.
wkcamp··on Ask HN: How do I stay motivated to learn?
You seemingly answered your own question. That is to stop beating around the bush.

Let me tell you my brief story--I taught myself how to program originally because I was all hyped up from the movies (the black screens, binary numbers, etc) and thought it would be the "cool" thing to do. Well, the hype died--quickly.

I waited and waited for that adrenaline rush/motivational burst to sporadically come into my life. Nothing came of it.

So I was disappointed. To learn you can not just rely on motivation (though it certainly helps), but rather you must rely on your discipline. Teach yourself to follow guidelines, set small goals and gradually increase them. This process will enhance your learning potential exponentially.

Just discipline. That's all it takes. You have to power through that, even if it seems so hard.

On another note, I read Hacker News and read many articles on subjects I want to learn to rejuvenate me if I feel disappointed or, unmotivated. Good luck!

wkcamp··on New Horizons enters safe mode 10 days before Pluto flyby
Does anyone know which language(s) the NASA engineers write the spacecraft's software in?
wkcamp··on Show HN: Timeup.io – Find a suitable time slot for a meeting with your peers
Just a question, are .io's cheaper than .com domains?
wkcamp··on Ask HN: How to start a side project?
I think the real focus of a side project should not be the idea, but rather the learning experience that comes with that idea. That being said, a dynamic job board that pulls from many websites could be a fantastic way of improving one's familiarity with web crawlers and such.
wkcamp··on All Systems Go for NASA's Mission to Jupiter Moon Europa
Does the "solid atmosphere" provide any unique benefits for Europa?
wkcamp··on Placebo Button
I already have begun levitating...In just a few days, I will finally be able to fly--just like Superman.
wkcamp··on Black Hole Hunters
Is it not possible to look at the accretion disk with a telescope and then make the calculations for the Event Horizon radius (Schwartzchild radius), etc of the black hole? Or do some black holes not have accretion disks?
wkcamp··on “Swift will be open source later this year”
Question: Does open source expose vulnerabilities in the security of the language?
wkcamp··on A New Theory to Explain the Higgs Mass
The issue is that a multiverse is so much harder to fathom and support, because once we accept the multiverse theory, we begin to see the infinitely different possible universes (that being said, infinity is hard to comprehend as well).
wkcamp··on Google Is Developing Its Own Uber Competitor
Out of curiosity, are there any companies in previous history that model the approach Google has done thus far, such as expanding into a vast amount of industries and successfully becoming a contender in those?

Anyway, I'm sure Google has enough money to support any failures (this point was made in a previous article about the multi-tool card). But, in the long run, how will Google prevent itself from appearing to look like a monopoly (such as Apple's iPhones in the earlier days)?

wkcamp··on Swift Standard Library: Generators, Sequences and Collections
Could you perhaps add this to Github so others can make contributions to the database?
