wjr··on Show HN: UpdateBerry – Turn Git commits into marketing assets (prototype)
Thanks! Good question.

It works with both conventional commits AND unstructured messages.

The AI analyzes the actual content and intent, not just prefixes.

Conventional commits help with clarity, but they're not required.

The main thing is having some context in the message about what changed.

Internal Linking for Webflow [ https://linkcherry.com ]

I've been working on an internal linking tool that actually understands your content, instead of just matching keywords.

The problem: Manual internal linking research doesn't scale. You grep for keywords, miss semantic relationships, and end up with orphan pages that never rank.

The approach:

  - Crawl → Extract → Vectorize → Cluster → Score
  - Build a link graph showing actual internal link structure
  - Use semantic similarity to find content relationships
  - Prioritize by: relevance × page authority × orphan status × implementation effort
  - Output exact placement with anchor text suggestions
What I learned:

  - Keyword matching finds ~60% of good opportunities; semantic analysis catches the rest
  - Most sites have 20-30% true orphans (no inbound links)
  - Anchor text optimization is the #1 thing people get wrong
If you're on Webflow, I'm specifically building integrations for your platform and need beta testers.

You'll get the full internal linking report (complete analysis, not a limited demo) in exchange for feedback.

(https://casacompose.com) - Real Estate Listing Description Generator

I built it after a conversation with a friend thats a RE agent.

As an agent, he was literally spending 45+ minutes per listing just staring at a blank screen trying to make "3BR/2BA ranch" sound compelling.

The AI actually analyzes the photos to pull out key features he might miss and adds neighborhood context, like walkability score and gets professional descriptions in 30 seconds.

Just launched it as a standalone SaaS - would love feedback from anyone in the RE industry.

wjr··on Ask HN: What is your best domain name?
https://warunex.pl - a play on words for a weather forecasting service for kitesurfers in Poland. A lot of companies in the early 90s in Eastern Europe ended their brand name with "EX", exp: Drutex, Critonex etc.
wjr··on Show HN: SalaryFeed – Anonymous salaries
I'd make sure to approve each entry before it shows up on the site or to give an option to flag it by the user.

Good data is the core value of this site if it's littered with jokes then no one will trust the site & contribute to it.

wjr··on Show HN: Grab a color palette for your next project
As a non-designer, I like seeing sites like this for inspiration, but I lack the imagination of how it would actually look like in actual implementation.

Something I'd suggest would be if it's possible to create a simple wireframe based web interface (form, CTA, background) that uses the currently selected color pallet, as a way to have a live preview of the individual color palette.

wjr··on Ask HN: How to help someone going through depression?
Small, frequent in-person interactions, that over time build up to doing active things together.
wjr··on Ask HN: Which books have helped you the most professionally?
ReWork by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson (good reference on good principles)

Traction by Gino Wickman (how to create SOPs & scale)

Authority by Nathan Barry (how to develop an audience)

wjr··on Ask HN: Is your marketing site outsourced?
Nope, those two are managed & planned separately.

The reason is:

- Marketing is running usually specific landing pages that are tailored to the campaigns we have going at the time. Having them hosted via a 3rd party, allows the non-technical people to change, update & publish changes to the copy, tracking codes & design on the fly.

- The "app" landing page in most cases is the registration/sign-in page.

Both of these sites are tracked via the same analytics tool to understand the breakdown of the marketing/onboarding funnel.

It's worth hiring a marketing agency if you have the revenue/funding to spend on it, since most likely they can handle a larger number of marketing experiments running at the same time, compared to an internal team.

However, if you're early stage, I definitely recommend doing it all yourself, the more you learn the better down the line when hiring someone to do the work for You.

wjr··on Ask HN: What about taking Hackathons online?
Even though the idea seems a little crazy I think it`s possible to organize such a event.

There are couple of hey things that have to be taken care of:

-cheating ( by announcing a topic couple hours before event starts )

-getting media sponsors ( preferably startups with API' )

-presentations streamed ( justin.tv/ustream etc.)

-progress written up ( like http://www.travisglines.com/web-coding/lets-make-a-twitter-c...)

-possible prizes via AppSumo or similar venue

I`ve been actually thinking about putting together such a event in the next couple of weeks.

Since I`m launching a website in exactly that area soon, check it out in my profile.

wjr··on Ask HN: College startups?
Current student in NYC, building a bootstrapped SaaS application.

Would love to see more stuff coming from students on HN, rather then reading for x time about funding, viral social mashup pseudo startups and top 10 lists... of things to do and not to do...

wjr··on Poll: How do you get physical exercise?
Depending on the season, I tend to focus more on:

Winter - Kettlebells Spring - Running Summer - Tennis Autumn - Biking/Hiking

This way I never get bored of any of those disciplines and are able to maintain a pretty healthy lifestyle.

wjr··on Ask HN: What have you built? (not software related)
I`d love to hear what kind of boat or what you future sailing project would be.
wjr··on Attn: Startup Founders, You Need a Hobby
I think anybody that is challenged daily with alot of problem solving and creative thinking should have a psychical hobby. Sports like running or swimming are pretty inexpensive and give you a great work out. Personally my favorite hobby is tennis, not only does it require psychical fitness but also a vast amount of critical thinking. Strategy is key in this sport.

However any psychical activity not related to your daily job helps not only clear your mind but also stay in good shape. By all means, if I could require each developer that I work with, run 2 miles every other day without hesitation, I would it.

wjr··on The Real Current State of Web Design
Link baiting is the worse kind of traffic generation technique I know. Even though in short term it is effective and might drive people to your site, over time most likely the title/content will be irrelevant dilute the brands identity. I agree SM isn`t what it use to be, however I do still find good articles to keep myself up to date on current trends etc. and I don`t expect anything else from it really.
wjr··on The Real Current State of Web Design
Great example, I actually subscribe to Net Tuts+ and think that Collis and Vahid really hit the niche of how-to type website spot on by building the Envato networks.
wjr··on The Real Current State of Web Design
It think anywhere from 4$ to 7$ a month with deals on yearly subs.

With expectations of less link bait style articles and more hands on content.

wjr··on The Real Current State of Web Design
It`s just funny how SM has a huuuge following and the main way they want to monetize the traffic is through Ads. Is that really the answer to making money on the internet these days? I`m really tired of seeing great sites and startups, fail at the basic principle = making money. There`s so many ways to develop a product or service for your audience that already enjoys your content and comes back for more, it`s not even funny.

btw. I think Smashing Magazine pumps out great content and is consistent in doing so.

wjr··on NYC Hackathon, April 2nd – April 3rd @ NYU
I on the other side, have no real dev skills just started on Ruby, feel good with CSS, HTML etc. So I`m also curious how this is going to turnout.
wjr··on Ask HN: How should I approach buying my ideal domain name?
Bidding at 25-35% of the original offer is something that worked for me in the past. Also a thing I found very useful is doing your initial offer from a alternative e-mail that doesn't have anything to do with you or your company, especially if you already have a established brand. Some reps research clients before proposing the price thus if you`re a "nobody" there`s a higher chance of getting a lower offer.
wjr··on Announcing the NYC Startup Job Fair
Really looking forward to this.
wjr··on Ask HN: How to get started with start-ups?
Start small.

Build something you`re passionate about, and go through all the phases: market research > product outline > dev/design > test > release > marketing

See what works, what doesn`t and most important have fun building it.

Small projects like: http://umbrellatoday.com/ or http://bouldr.net are the best thing to start off with, gain experience and network the hell out the local tech/biz community.

Good luck and have fun!
