wjd2030··on Google will soon let Pixel phones double as dashcams
of fucking course they will, its so generous of them, totally selfless, nothing else motivating them other than providing a service to the public :eyeroll:
wjd2030··on Ask HN: Why is everybody copying layoffs?
nah, great success.
wjd2030··on A functioning Turing Machine using Notepad++ and its find/replace regex engine

"Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should" - Dr. Ian Malcolm.
wjd2030··on Ask HN: Did I make a mistake jumping on the homestead bandwagon?
Its seems to me you need to decide what your values and priorities are. If you decided to homestead expecting to keep on pace with contemporary values such as wealth and social status then you made the wrong choice. The choice to largely leave society and attempt what you have is one often made in spite of contemporary values. Its a choice to leave them behind and adopt new values. Subsistence can be enough, if you decide it is. On the other hand if you haven't made those value changes in step with your lifestyle changes you will fail and likely grow depressed.
wjd2030··on Wire is now on F-Droid
Nope, and it was totally my fault, though at the time I tried to find a way to report the app and I didnt see it (though I could've missed it)
wjd2030··on Wire is now on F-Droid
I downloaded an app from F-Droid once, it was Spotify. Later that week I started getting strange spanish songs on my recently played. Checked my logged in sessions and there were several from latam. I deleted the app.
wjd2030··on Mozilla's Firefox Relay to be added to disposable-email-domains blacklist
I did the same using proton mail and catch-all addresses. Every website I give a unique email address and it all goes into a special folder. If I start receiving spam from any address it gets blocked. This also gives me a pretty solid idea if a company is selling my info.
wjd2030··on Ask HN: Solo-preneurs, how do you DevOps to save time?
Devops is a culture, not a verb. Success generally being measured by 4 key metrics:

Lead time to change Deployment Frequency Mean time to restore (MTTR) Change Failure Rate.

Though it often is, I do not believe it should be used interchangeably to refer to a suite of tools designed to enable CI/CD and SDLC Lifecycles.

wjd2030··on SEC charges Netflix insider trading ring
Meanwhile members of congress continue to get rich using their positions and its all good.
wjd2030··on MS Azure down: An emerging issue is being investigated

wjd2030··on Samsung accidentally sends 'Find My Mobile' notifications to Galaxy phones
Either a dev was playing around and oopsied or they got hacked.
wjd2030··on Turning PostgreSQL into a queue serving 10k jobs per second (2013)
I have tried this in our dev environment several times and failed b/c it didnt support all RESP2 commands (Using stackexchange.redis as the lib)
wjd2030··on Turning PostgreSQL into a queue serving 10k jobs per second (2013)
The difference is nothing. A message can be a serialized object representing a job. Or the message can be a jobId that points to a record in a db.
wjd2030··on Turning PostgreSQL into a queue serving 10k jobs per second (2013)
Exactly. It is so easy to achieve using a dedicated queuing system. You could just as easily achieve much higher throughput by passing a jobId as a message to Rabbit and have the worker pop the required data out of the db. Thats assuming you dont want to just pass in a serialized object. All this talk of it not being a durable system is just wrong. Rabbit has strong durability guarantees across a cluster with queue mirroring, confirmations and acknowledgements.
wjd2030··on Announcing unlimited free private repos
just microsoft being evil here. clearly.
wjd2030··on Time for third-party data brokers to emerge from the shadows?
facetious (fə-sēˈshəs)►

    adj.
    Playfully jocular; humorous: facetious remarks
wjd2030··on Time for third-party data brokers to emerge from the shadows?
Yeah! Maybe we can model it after the big 3 consumer credit agencies! We can centralize all ppls info in one easy to access place!

This new organization will be much more honest than the current ones!

IMO For this to happen correctly it has to be decentralized, perhaps blockchain style.

wjd2030··on DOSBox x86 system emulator
why is this trending?
wjd2030··on Show HN: Encrypt your home-lab server disks using AWS Key Management Service
Sometimes I read about projects like this and just think to myself "Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should."
wjd2030··on AMD, which lost over $2.8B in 5 years, takes a hit after new report
I'm calling total BS on this article. Graphics chip sales will continue to grow. These people are crazy.
wjd2030··on .NET core spies on users by default
This title is very misleading... The code is open source. And it is NOT spying on the user. I understand an opt-in model is typically preferred. This title is about as click-bait-esque as it gets though.
wjd2030··on 24-core CPU and I can’t move my mouse
I just wanted to say good work. I'm impressed you dug so deep. A fix here could really impact the entire Windows 10 user base.
wjd2030··on Lavabit Reloaded
this smells funny.
wjd2030··on Let's start using DuckDuckGo more often
>Well, no, they don't even have their own search engine.

This is false, as has already been pointed out.

If by 'shitty' you mean it has areas for improvement then yes I agree; as does your tact.

wjd2030··on Let's start using DuckDuckGo more often
Shitty based upon what? I would say they could improve, always room for improvement but DDG handles most of my searches with ease.
wjd2030··on AWS Lambda now supports C#
Lambda in general has starting delays for functions that havent been called in a while. You can create a cloud watch trigger to trigger your code to simply exit, poof, delay gone.
wjd2030··on Mail-in-a-Box – one-click, easy-to-deploy email server
I ended up using an smtp service from Mailjet to get around this issue. 600 free emails a month.
wjd2030··on Mail-in-a-Box – one-click, easy-to-deploy email server
I love that I found this the day after I finished getting iRedMail setup and configured with all the SPF, DKIM and SMTP forwarding services.

I went with MailJet for SMTP forwarding, 600 emails a month for free.
