wizzerking··on Ask HN: What are some educational resources for more senior engineers?
I concur with warrenm I got into deep learning because of the opensourcing of Tensorflow, PyTorch and FOSS and BECAUSE I had worked with Neural Networks before they became convolutional. I did not want to do the same old thing Principal Component Analysis. For more senior engineers I always advocate for learn train and see what in your past should be updated. If your goal is Architect then learn algorithms and interconnections. If the goal is Principal Engineer then processes. Are you able to combine these roles into a new role a Principle Architect ?
wizzerking··on Ask HN: What are some useful websites that most people don't know about?

wizzerking··on Ask HN: Are older programmers/computer scientists more impressed with ChatGPT?
I am 67 years old and ChatGPT is just a more efficient LISP as far as I can tell, but I could be wrong, since I am 67 years old
wizzerking··on Ask HN: Anyone else regret leaving an old job for a new one?
Ues I left a contract through actalent to Boeing to a company that created prosthesis using software and CAD CAM. The head of the software group is some one from a middle eastern countr4y. Culture clash to the max !!! I was given my first assignment to add to a QT 6 example app,. but I saw no signal and slots menu items so after 3 days I was questioned in the open SCRUM meeting what my findings were, and I said there were no signal & slots, I was told by this person categorically I was wrong there has to be signal and slot for the menu system to work, with him even looking at the code. After that I was given specific instructions on normalizing the histograms of various images by the "deep learning expert", so I followed them, but he left out a step to make all the images have the same histogram, and because I did not catch the mistake in the directions I was again questioned in an open SCRUM meeting that day and again the next day. There was no way to regain my credibility, so I left that company and begged for my contract back even at a reduced rate.
wizzerking··on Ask HN: I will become a father tomorrow, what advice could you share with me?
Watch out for Post Partum Depression it is not fake it can very real I concur with AndrewDucker below YOU BOTH CREATED THIS NEW LIFE !
wizzerking··on Ask HN: Is a MSc in Computer Science worth the time and money?
I am a 67 year old "Software Engineer" with a master's of Science in Chemical Engineering from Stanford. I have found this Master's of Science has set me apart from other candidates several times, because the degree shows I am capable of understanding advanced mathematics, and reasoning. But my classes were paid for by my work Place SRI International in Menlo Park provided I passed the classes. My out of pocket expenses were for books, and gas for travel. Many of the larger employers have a similar program. Get at most 2 Master's of Science in overlapping Disciplines, I find the master's of science are a detriment on my resume' , but is an advantage on my linkedin page when arguing with PhD's
wizzerking··on Ask HN: Which web browser do you use and why?
Right now use Brave and Vivaldi, because they do not crash my Linux System Currently FireFox Causes a Crash of Linux Mint
wizzerking··on Ask HN: Is it time for software engineering to be a licensed job?
Well Said Besides who is going to take on the task of a never changing test, like when colleges tried to test software acquired knowledge, and the languages just kept evolving from pascal, to basic to c/c++ to rust and let's not forget forth and brainfuck.
wizzerking··on Ask HN: Does anyone have a great public domain list of programming books?
Not public domain,m but free for download. Usually subsidized by companies https://freecomputerbooks.com/

Links to Free Computer, Mathematics, Technical Books all over the World

wizzerking··on Ask HN: What was the best onboarding experience you had as a new employee?
27 years of experience Software Engineer with master's of science Forever.com Jeff Stonebrook experience was wonderful Had a doc that detailed how to build software from day one after 1 week we had a conversation, and we agreed on a time table that we both agreed was a guess and not a hard milestone I worked, and asked questions during the work day via email. supervisor liked my complete thoughts and analysis My work mostly completed with regular effort except for some edge cases My experience allowed to learn code as I was adding a new feature, so I enjoyed the process.
wizzerking··on Ask HN: Why developers hate marketing so much?

wizzerking··on Ask HN: Should I purse a masters to become a Research Engineer?
I have found that having a Master's of Science on my resume' has been invaluable. I am 66 years old software Engineer, I would highly recommend a Master's of Science in virtually any Math, and/or Engineering discipline except Chemistry where i would recommend no less than a PhD unless you want to be a lab monkey all your life. I worked at SRI International in Menlo Park for 13 years. In Electrochemistry right out of College UC Davis Until I received my second and eventually 3rd Master's of Science I was considered a "Super Tech" by the PhD people there; i.e. a Lab monkey some one who carried out their (PhD's) programs When I found errors in their Math, or incompatibilities in their reasoning I earned their respect enough to be included in their (PhD's) planning but that took over 7 years.

Now that I have been effectively a Software Engineer for over 25 years, and taught my self Deep Learning, Python, and C++ I am commanding a rate of 80 per hour W2 but that required over 15 years and lots of learning.

So prove you can learn by obtaining a least 2 Master's of Science in somewhat related fields Like some Engineering, and Applied Math and things will be easier for you and somewhat more "fun"

wizzerking··on Ask HN: Why is Hacker News so much more successful than Slashdot?
wider range of subject matter ? Maybe us nerds/tech heads like other subjects ? Could also be the comments, but I don't comment very often and rarely read the comments except to be sure I am not repeating what was already there
wizzerking··on Windows 10 minus the spyware plus added stability and security
How to perform actual download ??
wizzerking··on Ask HN: Anyone using Edge AI or TinyML tools for real world development?
yes I am using TinyML on Pic32, and Gumstix based systems with spiking neural networks. Pretty hit and miss for facial recognition, voice recognition better than 90%, word recognition in the voice depends on training. When you are stuffed up with cold < 70% Normal > 90% I don't have camera so object recognition is not available But person in front of device with IR sensor is 100%
wizzerking··on Ask HN: Why do adblockers still work?
Plus here in the U.S.A we have data caps if we have to use AT&T so any bandwidth taken up by ads is bandwidth we can not use for stuff we really want to see. On top of that we are constantly inundated with malware, from drive by's and other malicious websites, that we have to pay for malware protection, on top of having to pay for 70 per month to 100 Megabits per second in the LA ara
wizzerking··on Ask HN: Why is there no high quality method for voice control of a PC?
The major problem when using voice to control a machine is tremors in the voice as the work day proceeds, when the person is stressed, and if the person is experiencing health issues. All these situations/reason will change the timber, and in some cases the intonation. Like 'emphasis on the syllable. Now top that off with accents, like a Hispanic person, or regional slang. Deep Learning kits like https://github.com/FreddieAbad/Voice-Recognition-using-Deep-... are making headway but still far from general voice recognition
wizzerking··on Ask HN: Which language/IDE you use to make binaries (.exe) for Windows?
Thank you for Sciter; guess I need to learn more
wizzerking··on Ask HN: What is the largest dataset you know of?
The mass spectral dataset of today is 12 petabytes
wizzerking··on Ask HN: Do you have to use LinkedIn to get hired?
That is why I have a NO JAVA Gmail template that tells the recruiter to learn to properly use their search engine https://www.lifehack.org/articles/technology/20-tips-use-goo... https://edu.gcfglobal.org/en/topics/googleapps/

Since it is a template it takes 20 - 30 seconds to respond
