wittyusername··on The 'paperwork flood': How I drowned a bureaucrat before dinner
I don't believe this is actually real, but it was great to read nonetheless.
wittyusername··on FBI is buying location data to track US citizens, director confirms
I find myself uninstalling every app unless I really need it and use it. It's amazing how many apps just sit around in your life over time. get them off your phone
wittyusername··on Can you reverse engineer our neural network?
All I think when I see this is "this intelligence wasted on finance and ads."

Can you imagine human potential if it was somehow applied to crop harvesting efficiency, new medicines, etc?

Not everything has to be perfectly efficient but it just saddens me to see all these great minds doing what, adversarially harvesting margin from the works of others?

wittyusername··on The Eric and Wendy Schmidt Observatory System
As you can see by the name of the thing, they are married
wittyusername··on Cancer vaccines are having a renaissance
Why are these trials organ specific? Lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, etc. Does it really matter?
wittyusername··on Marissa Mayer's Startup
Why can't people just admit they got super lucky and stay retired
wittyusername··on Alcohol without the hangover – scientists are finding ways
ZBiotics is a really exciting biotech startup that makes a GMO probiotic that digests Acetaldehyde, a byproduct of alcohol consumption that is a large part of hangovers. Personally think they reduce the effect of drinking by about 40%.

wittyusername··on Become Ungoogleable
The process is somewhat straightforward: - Search your full name, your username, your phone number, pieces of your last 3 addresses. - Check image search in particular For each result: - Google their remove me process and execute it, if they have one. - If not, find an email contact and ask nicely. Make up some excuse - If that doesn’t work, email a more formal GDPR right to be forgotten note if you are in EU. - If that doesn’t work, Google has a GDPR removal process if you are in EU.

Now wait 1-2 months and do it again. Now wait 1-2 months and do it again. ..

After about a year you should be able to reduce your surface area tremendously.

wittyusername··on What in the Ethereum application ecosystem excites me
I like the guy, he seems like a genuine technologist / hacker. I wish him well.

None of the things he has worked on are any good so far. Objectively nobody actually uses this stuff. My definition: nobody would choose this stuff at arms length from a financial interest in pretending it is the correct technological + business choice.

wittyusername··on Recommendations for Japan Travel
This is interesting, but not great Japan advice. I just went and had a blast and did the opposite of his advice. I think people are different and want different things and don't feel bad if you just want to see the standard Japan checklist. His talk of everyone being surly..you know what, be respectful, everyone in Japan is so polite and nice that you will be happy with the level of service everywhere.

I've been many times and there is a time to venture out and there is a time to enjoy what everyone enjoys and both are fine.

wittyusername··on Google to lay off 10k “poor performers”
The founders are done with each other and long gone. It's just a financial entity maximizing profit. It's amazing to watch the full circle of Google's brilliant birth to slow plateau.
wittyusername··on Ask HN: Firing an employee under a month before vest?
If you would be relieved if anyone quit, fire them TODAY.
wittyusername··on Amazon admits giving police Ring camera footage without consent
I wonder if this Ultrasound Directional Jammer would be the right mix of legal and proportionate.

wittyusername··on Butyrylcholinesterase is a potential biomarker for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
Gosh he's describing the Owlet which is an amazing device and I am glad exists and the FDA sure isn't
wittyusername··on You don't need an EV to cut your carbon emissions from oil
Sorry to change the topic but why is his web site constantly moving around so much? Sheesh
wittyusername··on Lead poisoning among US children
We bought some children's sized coat hangars off Amazon and used a lead testing kit on them. They popped positive for lead :(

No name brand from China. I wonder what else in our lives might have lead in it..

wittyusername··on The rise of never-ending job interviews
I think it's time to name and shame not sure why you are being coy when they jerked you around so much.
wittyusername··on Real world ownership is not a use case for blockchain
He said "real problem" so..yeah
wittyusername··on Military scrambling to understand aviation crash risk from new 5G sale
I fly with a radar altimeter safety device and I am not in the military.
wittyusername··on Google Finance Finally Updated
Gosh, it's amazing how they just refuse to make this tool powerful. Still can't set a custom date range, or add technical indicators. I mean these are like 2003 requirements for a decent site let alone 2020. Just off the top of my head..historical data, SEC filings, better volume data, options pricing..
wittyusername··on American Academy of Sleep Medicine calls for elimination of daylight saving time
Another reason to love Puerto Rico and move here - our time zone, Atlantic Standard Time, has no daylight savings. All my fist shaking at the clouds in EST/EDT, welp, I solved it!
wittyusername··on Inventing the Beach: The unnatural history of a natural place (2016)
Puerto Rico! If you are a US citizen you can just get up and move here. Lots of videos on YouTube to describe what it’s like and what it’s like to move here.
wittyusername··on Inventing the Beach: The unnatural history of a natural place (2016)
I live on the beach. Like actually I wake up and there it is staring at me in bed, my porch is covered in corrosion and salt air persists everywhere.

It may be an invention but a few years into living here damned if it isn't one of the few things that resists hedonic adaptation. I feel way more relaxed here, granted I was coming from a major metro but I sometimes things that get hyped up actually are great!

wittyusername··on SpaceX successfully catches both fairing for the first time
I think the salt water even for brief periods even surrounded and raised up a few feet by bouys is a corrosive disaster. Maybe reusable a few times but not the long term solution if they want to reuse them 10's / 100's of times.
wittyusername··on An interview with Paul Graham on writing
I was sitting at my cubicle not sure what to do in 2005 and read his essays and it crystallized some vague feeling I'd had. I am not completely sure it made the difference, but it definitely helped me get going. I quit my good job, started a company and now over a decade later I have a lot to show for it.

Maybe he isn't the best writer, I dunno. I have no one to compare it to really. But I read his stuff and got tremendous value from it. I feel lucky to have read his stuff when I did and I recommend it to people at least as a first step.

wittyusername··on How to detect web bots?
My favorite thing to do was to detect a bot and then show the bot a parallel dataset I'd developed of bogus information. Instead of hitting a block and working its way around it, competitors scraped a bunch of slightly warbled nonsense data. Have fun with that gang! Also made it super duper easy to see who'd try to steal our data.
wittyusername··on Ask HN: Is there any point in trying to clear your online footprint
I did a big project to remove myself. It’s a slog. You do a ton of passes, each time you get a little more and escalate your approach with lazy vendors. GPDR can help on the last couple of ones. There are 1-2 spots that I can’t ever remove, public records etc. But generally now the bottom line is if you google my name, no pictures come up, no articles about me come up on page 1. I’m just looking to be incredibly unremarkable to a quick google search of a kidnapper, hotel staff selling the names of guests to criminals, etc.
wittyusername··on Miami Woos New York Homebuyers Fleeing Over Tax Law
In the UK instead you pay 'stamp duty', whichever you want to think of it is sort of like paying 10 years of property tax upfront.
wittyusername··on Project Fi Is Now Google Fi
They are native speeds, or at least so fast that they might as well have been. I was seeing > 60mbit in Germany.
wittyusername··on Honda will use GM’s self-driving technology, invests in Cruise
I think one issue is that, like VR, one bad actor sours the consumer appetite for the entire concept. I think a safer road for GM is to become the de facto A+ supplier of tech that works well than for 2/3 of the legacy industry to have janky half-working sorta-dangerous solutions in 2025.
