withoutfriction··on Ask HN: How much recurring income do you generate, and from what?
Derek, you're missing out on an extra ~7%!

Sign up for Amazon's affiliate program and use your own affiliate links on your links to amazon.

Also, as commented below - I posted the first of these recurring income threads almost two years ago - I'm now compiling some stats, data and insights [1] for myself so that I can learn how to boost my numbers closer to yours :)

It's good to be back!

I guess it was around 864 days ago that I posted the original one of these threads!

My current stats:

$~500/mo from a few supplement related websites, and some fitness stuff. Last worked on these back in April. Total work/month is roughly 30 minutes.

My current project:

Doing the research so that I can boost this to around $5000/mo :)

I figure this is as good a time as any to announce that I'm actually putting together a little recurring project of my own - and it's pretty meta.

It's pure stats and useful information on who generates recurring income, how much work they had to do to get there, what they learned/should've done/shouldn't have done. I'm researching this purely for myself, because I want to get to more recurring income faster (because recurring income is so, so, so freeing) - but a few friends asked me to package it up so I'm doing so!

Check it out [1]. Also I figure I should post it to HN, so I'll update this comment when I do so :)

Thanks guys - and really glad to see this thread live on longer than when I first posted it almost three years ago!

If you are happy to, I would love to contact you. hn<symbol>myusername.com

Also just wanted to say that you should improve the link text color used on the about page of your website.

Thanks for responding to the thread. This interests me. Any chance you could shoot me an email? Email is in profile.
withoutfriction··on Ask HN: How much recurring income do you generate, and from what?
Hey guys, awesome to see such a successful thread.

I'd like to set up some sort of group where we get ~10 people together and then each week set things we need to do, and then next week we make sure the other people completed their goals.

If you are in, post your email as a reply to this. I'm going to use a posterous group to accomplish this - though if there is something else that would work better let me know.

withoutfriction··on The Complete Guide for Starting iPhone and iOS Development
If this guide stays popular on HN for a bit, I will strongly consider (read: will) research it and write one up.

I did add a point about using a Hackintosh, though it is good that you mentioned about using a VM image of OSX.

This is the third similar spam post I have seen from this account and site - I think the account should be moderated.
withoutfriction··on Everything You Know About Fitness is a Lie
As a bible for starting fitness training, might I add that Starting Strength [1], by Mark Rippetoe, is a must read.

withoutfriction··on Get your free AppSumo bundle while you can
Note - I chucked an affiliate code on the end there, but I don't think it will do much considering it is a free deal :P

And if you ask 'then why did you do it in the first place', I don't really have much of an answer - I just knew that if I did people like me (aka HN) prefer a disclosure.

So cheers guys, make the most of the free stuff - I'm not affiliated with the company just thought someone might find this useful.

withoutfriction··on Building a Recommendation Engine with NumPy
Is ruby appropriate for writing recommendation engines? Or is there far more support for writing them in python?

withoutfriction··on A hacker's Christmas wishlist
Thank you both! Will definitely check out these before I make a purchase. In fact, I might even ask HN what writing instruments they use before I buy the Kuru Toga.

Good suggestion! I'm surprised I forgot to write CrashPlan pro. Though I did have Dropbox on there, so I suppose that counts for a bit. I added CrashPlan pro to the $25-50 section.

For me, I will use a second 1tb drive as a raid 1 drive mirrored to my main drive, to prevent against drive failure. The really important stuff on there is saved in Dropbox anyway.

withoutfriction··on A hacker's Christmas wishlist
Sorry, wasn't me. I'll upvote you to equalize the downvote :)

And I agree with your reasoning - in another post that I had an Amazon affiliate code I remembered to put a disclosure, however this time I forgot.

On a reasonably related note, I found out a few days ago that StackOverflow and the StackExchange network of sites automatically insert their affiliate code into Amazon and presumably other sites links.

edit: and I just got back, so can do any edits you would suggest to the article

withoutfriction··on A hacker's Christmas wishlist
Am on mobile at the moment, but I wholly agree, and mentioned that in the guide I linked to next to the Five fingers site link. Good to emphasize though, and I will add that soon.
withoutfriction··on A hacker's Christmas wishlist
Sorry - have added disclosures about that. Though I thought it would be preferred over ads, would it not? It's funny how they are treated differently, as the same comment wouldn't be made about a page with some unobtrusive ads.

withoutfriction··on Hey Yahoo, Can you please open source Delicious?
Why not try the Xmarks method? Seeing as a fair number of people are paying for pinboard as a replacement, Yahoo could ask people to commit to paying $10 (outright or per year) to keep their delicious account.
withoutfriction··on Show HN: Google spreadsheet to help you decide between note taking apps
Any feedback at all on it? I would really appreciate any comments you might have.
withoutfriction··on Tell HN: I'll compare the note apps you tell me to, within the next 24 hours
Currently, what I will be looking at is:

- Evernote & Springpad

Other apps will be subject to suggestions, though I'm considering:

- Springnote, Backpack, Memonic, Ubernote, Simplenote, Catch (formerly snaptic), Synotes, org-mode, OneNote, Google Docs, Zoho Notebook
