withdavidli··on The average person’s reading speed is slower than commonly thought
article: normal was thought to be 300wpm, meta analysis of new study says it's 238wpm, also speed varies between languages.

Never got tested for reading speed in school like the article says some schools do. That's good for me as I would have failed the 300wpm mark.

Tried speed reading software in high school and college, my normal speed is around 150-200wpm. Even with faster skimming sessions it never got over 450wpm and reverts back to my normal range when not using software. Learned to be okay with it as it seems my comprehension / memory were optimal at my normal range.

withdavidli··on Uber opens at $42 per share
For your point on TD Ameritrade, they're offering commission rebate first 5 days. Don't believe they offered that for Lyft. They're saying it's because they did not participate in Ubers IPO.
withdavidli··on Uber S-1
Becoming profitable at the cost of growth. I think the market would punish that. The story of growth company is what drives high multiples to sales/profit. If that changes to a mature company analysts will start thinking about measuring by P/E.
withdavidli··on Google and IBM still trying desperately to move cloud market share needle
They did this when I first moved to the valley in 2013. Found them sponsoring hackathons and giving away GCP at 10k-50k free first year for just participating, prizes for winning hackathon was, I believe, actual cash plus 50k+ more GCP. But not sure if they kept up the sponsorships.

They don't check if you actually worked for the place reviewed. You can leave a review for any company to gain access. Sorry GameStop, for my neutral review even though I never worked there.

Not sure if I understand your concept correctly, sounds like Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP).
withdavidli··on Glitter bomb tricks parcel thieves
This can go horribly wrong quickly. How do you deal with the public going after the wrong people? Does the poster take responsibility for all harm done?

This is what Reddit tried to do with the Boston bombing.

How do you handle deep fakes?

withdavidli··on How Smart People Sabotage Their Success
>People who drove themselves crazy working as hard as they could in school generally didn't get anywhere in the real world.

I think these are the people the author is referencing. These students did amazing if measuring by GPA, but did so through hard work and a lot of thinking. Got praised for GPA related achievements which reinforced their over studying/thinking behavior, which leads to the scenarios the author describes.

The most successful people you talk about likely wouldn't have the issues the article addresses.

withdavidli··on Why I Quit Being a Therapist [video]
Nope. The mental health assistant job knocked it out of me. Nothing like being in an environment where you have to be on guard for your safety to really want an office job (friends had teeth knocked out, another head-butted ended with concussion and I believe migraines for rest of her life, I almost had a finger bitten off, and other coworkers got stabbed with utensils).
withdavidli··on Why I Quit Being a Therapist [video]
To know what they're getting into. It's mostly a thankless job. One of the OP's video talks about how most therapist just wants the easy clients and refer all their hard ones to the YouTuber. So it will vary greatly depending on who your clients are. Imagine the difference between being a therapist for silicon valley tech employees vs a mental hospital, prison, or juvenile detention center.

If they do their own practice, it's much like any other business, picking the right clients goes a long way in making your job easier and how much money you can make.

Psychiatrist are different than psychologist. The former goes to medical school and can prescribe drugs.

withdavidli··on Why I Quit Being a Therapist [video]
It's a profession that's mentally and emotionally draining. My education background is in psychology, worked at a mental institution for a few months as a mental health assistant. Never met a psychologist that was actively encouraging students to go the therapist route, in fact the opposite. It's something to think long and hard about. One memorable encounter was an aunt of my friend literally grabbed me by the arm when she found out I was planning to be a psychologist and advised against it. Thought "who is this crazy lady", she was head psychologist of several institutions for the district...

Happy to see you clarified your take on point one. While summaries are helpful, it's playing the telephone game on interpretation. It's better to view the source material whenever possible.

Did she ever get pulled over by the cops? Asked if there were any weapons in the car lol. Or do they get diplomatic plates?
withdavidli··on How to teach yourself hard things
the point isn't that you understand there are topics that are essential, it's to have someone to identify what is essential.

we all have blindspots, much more when we're just starting something new.

withdavidli··on When You’re Hot, You’re Hot: Career Successes Come in Clusters
As another person said, large well run HR departments have this data. Level employees come in at, performance reviews, compensation, and job titles within the company throughout employees tenure.

It would be hard to standardize it across multiple companies in a person's career. Maybe for people that stayed at one company their entire lives. Govt/military likely have higher rates of people working and retiring withinn their system for 20+ years. And their job titles should be standardized as well.

withdavidli··on When You’re Hot, You’re Hot: Career Successes Come in Clusters
I mean, is your career finished? Reading this, I wondered if there were any other clusters that would have been the glory years, but later on the person’s accomplishments were so much better it completely eclipses their past glory.

It seems the researchers concentrated on creative careers. Wonder if it is applicable to more corporate standardized careers and how would they would measure it. The title implies careers in general, but I don’t find what the article says to support the careers in general.

Would also warn against using this as self fulling prophecy.

withdavidli··on Mea culpa: there is a crisis in the humanities
This was one of the blogs that factored into deciding not to go grad school even though I ready took the GREs (psychology, would have been for I/O so more quant heavy than most in the field) : https://100rsns.blogspot.com/?m=1
withdavidli··on How to beat LinkedIn: The Game
Yes. It’s much earlier.

Anything pre ipo, they’re going to be the first 1% of shareholders if the company does well. And many times you can’t even buy into those rounds without the right connections. Early is subjective vs if he said he was an angel round investor.

withdavidli··on How to beat LinkedIn: The Game
I don't discount people that got it in secondary markets. It's not like they're only buying a few shares. I can't find outside sources. The most legit one is from WSJ[0], 200k investment in 2009. Hopefully they verified holdings and date of investment before printing.

Crunchbase does list him as Angel/Seed Round investor in Uber in 2010[1].

withdavidli··on How to beat LinkedIn: The Game
Did you do zero research on him? He still runs a marketing business with real customers. He also invested early in FB, Snapchat, and Uber.

He had a challenge this year on flipping items from free section of Craigslist, yard sales, thrift stores for profit.

What is this all pretty much useless? He gives away 99% of information for free (I've been watching his videos for 3 years). He comes out with a book once every two or three years that's a synthesis of mostly what he has already given away. Think of Tim Ferris' book Tools of Titans.

Do you think advise like work to make money so you can fund your own businesses if no one else wants to fund you is useless? How about figuring what you want and reverse engineering the path? Or to successful entrepreneur who doesn't find money rewarding anymore, that it's good thing, because most people never get past the phase of chasing money, that he can focus on what he wants and finds meaningful.

withdavidli··on eBay Is Conducting a 'Mass Layoff' in the Bay Area
not just amazon. here's a piece on using 3 people's different devices and price difference they get: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZVpbwz6kPk

as for amazon price changes, i use the honey plugin, can see the past 120 day price history. surprised by how much it can fluctuate.

withdavidli··on Tesla CEO Elon Musk vows to 'fix' tainted water in Flint, Michigan
The money gets taxed, but money goes elsewhere and the problem never fixed or it’s almost always over budget.

But yes. It’s suppose to work the way you described. Abuse and incompetence gets in the way.

withdavidli··on Warner Bros. wants to build a $100M aerial tramway to the Hollywood sign
My bold solution. Move the sign.

I went to see it. Didn't do the hike, took a pic from shopping center.

I get people go to see signs, but it doesn't need to be on a hill. The Amsterdam sign is right outside a museum/park. Still swarmed with tourist.

withdavidli··on Mark Zuckerberg Tops Warren Buffett to Become the World’s Third-Richest Person
Yep. That’s who I’m referring to. I don’t know each persons’ level of control and utilization of their country’s wealth. But Xi only needs a fraction of his country to match Putin’s.

The consolidation of power is what we have to look out for. So the qualifier to your statement is “yet”. Would you have said the same thing of Putin after he returned to being president? How long did it take him to control as much as he has?

withdavidli··on Mark Zuckerberg Tops Warren Buffett to Become the World’s Third-Richest Person
By that argument, there’s another person that’s basically president for life that controls a country with about 10x of Russia’s.
withdavidli··on The Pentagon Is Building a Team of Tech-Savvy Soldiers
This is true. Though the perks and benefits that the govt provides for office workers are not going to be able to compete with top tech companies. Pension is delayed payment of decades while tenure at companies are dropping. I bet quantifying these forms of pay would make the comparison even worse.

There are a few things that I’m comparing it to that makes me say they are cheap (since it is a relative term).

1. How much money the govt has spent in other endeavors whether policy or contractors.

2. How much private sector (market) values top talent that the govt is trying to attract and retain. Value prop for private companies is high, but the impact these people can have on the US govt should be a lot larger.

withdavidli··on The Pentagon Is Building a Team of Tech-Savvy Soldiers
Yearly makes much more sense. At the same time, nowhere near enough to make up for the pay cut. I’m non tech, and my peer who was being recruited for US Digital Service would had to take about a 50k pay cut to sub 100k level.
withdavidli··on The Pentagon Is Building a Team of Tech-Savvy Soldiers
Force as in military or combat jobs? Any list that provides jobs or departments that offer this type of subsidy?

Quick Google search brings deferred loan programs. I'm not aware of subsidized housing programs except for stationed military. If this is widely available, it would change the math for many people. 4,500/month stipend pays the mortgage. Friends in other govt departments never had that, is it DC specific?
