winthrowe··on Gmail marking email from me as spam
That Hotmail branding survived long after the purchase; in the last few years it's the same interface as their 365 business offering now, and under outlook.com branding.
winthrowe··on LAN Manager Product Specification, 1987
It's time to drop cmd and use powershell, cd is an alias of set-location which handles this fine:

    PS C:\>cd \\server\share
    PS Microsoft.PowerShell.Core\FileSystem::\\server\share>
winthrowe··on B.C. introduces law to require cars, trucks sold by 2040 be zero emission
Thinking on it, I usually see it used in the British sense in politics, but often the American sense in business.

I try to avoid it; it's even more ambiguous than most Canadian compromises between British and American English.

winthrowe··on Trying to ‘Save’ the Rural Economy
I would think that having multiple universities within the city disqualifies it from being called a 'small town'.
winthrowe··on Cannabis is legal in Canada: What you need to know
It wasn't a surprise to me.

All medical cannabis in Canada has been shipped via Canada Post for almost two decades, and the same set of producers are handling recreational supplies. Extending this to recreational seems like a straightforward way to get things started.

winthrowe··on [dead]
Because you're holding it wrong.

The blacklisted file types are frequently changing, tanking your sync performance, and the client applications that use them communicate directly with their backend services.

I'm not saying it's a good reason, but it's not completely arbitrary.

winthrowe··on Microsoft Closes US Surface Factory, Moves Production to China
The software, I would presume. The Snow Crash quote "America makes movies, music, and microcode" has never seemed more true.
winthrowe··on How to start an e-commerce store that doesn’t dropship
Most of the e-cig/vape sites I've purchased from are running WooCommerce.
winthrowe··on Google: Security Keys Neutralized Employee Phishing
> What happens if you lose your Yubikey or similar?

Get two, leave one in your safe deposit box. Every service I've seen that supports U2F supports multiple tokens.

winthrowe··on The Era of Very Low Inflation and Interest Rates May Be Near an End
You can't really get a rate fixed over the entire amortization period in Canada, our 'fixed rate' mortgages are a 5 year lockin typically.
winthrowe··on Teenager facing prison for downloading unsecured files from government website
Information accessible here was SUPPOSED to be all public, with sensitive information located elsewhere, however a handful of improperly redacted documents were also published to the site. Here's a more technical article: https://evandentremont.com/some-information-on-the-freedom-o...
winthrowe··on Wall Street rethinks blockchain projects as euphoria meets reality
Nothing.

Decentralisation is the selling point of blockchain technology.

Anyone building on a blockchain that doesn't think decentralisation is beneficial in and of itself is a conman.

winthrowe··on Self-Driving Truck Encounters the Unexpected, Then Reaches a Milestone
No, those are sensor failures, not external communications failures.

The human equivalent would be being unable to call someone for directions.

winthrowe··on Ikea’s new wedge dowel joint makes stronger furniture and faster assembly(2017)
We might have known that, but I didn't know that they could be manufactured at scale and then assembled by the lowest common denominator while maintaining acceptable quality.

I thought that these techniques were stuck in my father's woodshop.

winthrowe··on DeepMind and Blizzard Open StarCraft II as an AI Research Environment
I haven't looked at SC2 specifically, but would be surprised if they were floats; I sometimes read game dev blogs and RTSs on average tend to be implemented using int/fixed-point based positioning, to eliminate floating point imprecision as a source of multiplayer sync issues.
winthrowe··on Project Snowflake: Non-blocking safe manual memory management in .NET
I've never used it, but know it uses C#; but after a quick perusal of the docs seems to use mono, not the Microsoft implementation even on windows:

https://docs.unity3d.com/Manual/WindowsDebugging.html

winthrowe··on Microsoft/.Net Foundation added telemetry to the dotnet command line last year
If you're setting up automated non-interactive installs, your job is to check for install failures and consult the documentation; I know that's part of my job.

I'd recommend a required installer flag forcing the user to make a decision, but I'm a user who generally leaves telemetry on.

winthrowe··on Netflix expected to spend over $6B on original and acquired programming in 2017
It's not made by Syfy, the top rights belong to Alcon; Syfy just is the exclusive American distributor.
winthrowe··on Onedrive is slow on Linux but fast with a “Windows” user-agent (2016)
As far as I'm aware this has to do with the fact that major updates are being delivered in a manner that's basically equivalent to a full reinstall, causing a lot of settings to get reset to defaults. This update method is particularly common for the insiders, but still happens from time to time on the general builds: anniversary update, creator's update and such.
winthrowe··on AWS X-Ray – Distributed Tracing System
AWS major conference/product showcase is going on this week.

https://reinvent.awsevents.com/

Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon each dominate the frontpage for several days when their respective developer conferences are ongoing or just completed.

winthrowe··on IPv6 Performance – Revisited [video]
If you've got nat64 and dns64 setup, you should be ok for most things, but in many environments it's easier to dual stack - do both 4 and 6 on end hosts, rather than setting up nat64.
winthrowe··on ASA Investigating No Man’s Sky’s Steam Advertising
You're thinking of Will Wright; Peter Molyneux's classic fame was Populous and Black and White, and recent controversy Godus.
winthrowe··on The biggest surprises from living in a simulated Martian habitat for a full year
You've missed the joke; the contract referred to is marriage.
winthrowe··on The DNSSEC master key securing DNS is about to change
My reading of this is that it is a colloquialism indicating that that the initial actions are preparatory and in the background, with the third action being the actual cause of visible changes downstream.
winthrowe··on Microsoft Live Account Credentials Leaking from Windows 8 and Above
If you don't have to pay and therefore authenticate, it's not really a store, but only a software repository.
winthrowe··on Microsoft is ending Xbox 360 production more than 10 years after its debut
It may not be true anymore, but it certainly was when the Xbox division was first conceived.
winthrowe··on Bitcoin Is Back, But It Never Really Left
What's your alternative distribution model? How do you propose to bootstrap an independent value store unattached to existing national currencies? It seems that bitcoin mirrors that quote about democracy in that way, "the worst form except the others that have been tried."
winthrowe··on Study: people who eat and exercise the same as people 20 years ago are fatter
1980 was thirty-five years ago, not twenty.
winthrowe··on Why DNS in OS X 10.10 is broken, and what you can do to fix it
No, Microsoft has not been recommending .local, as this document, circa Windows Server 2000, states:

> Identify your organization's DNS owner and determine what registered DNS names you have available on the network that will host Active Directory.

> If you do not have a registered domain name, you should register a name with an Internet DNS registration authority.

winthrowe··on Mobile is Eating the World
> A lot of gaming is phone/tablet rather than a PC.

You can take my ability to dissipate over a half kilowatt from my cold dead hands. Some games will always be better on PC because they can make use of the power.
