winrid··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (April 2026)
I'm working on Watch.ly - a remote human-in-the-loop networking and FS sandbox for AI agents like openclaw: https://watch.ly/

Also this week launching https://dirtforever.net/ which is an open alternative to RaceNet Clubs for Dirt Rally 2, since EA is shutting that down.

I'm also expanding the SDK and plugin space for https://fastcomments.com and am planning on adding AI agents because everyone expects that now :) a big challenge is building it in a way that doesn't make half the users mad. So I'm planning on marking any comments left by AI mods with a "bot" tag, and having the system email users on why it made certain decisions, with an option to contest that loops in a real person. I'm hoping this provides value to site owners while not angering real people. The agents could also just do non-invasive things like notify certain moderators when comments violate community standards in some way, or give out awards. I'm also hoping at some point I can run my own hardware for the LLMs so I don't have to share people's data with third parties.

winrid··on I run multiple $10K MRR companies on a $20/month tech stack
you also get a much better query execution engine, so if you need to run reports or analytics they will be faster
winrid··on Keeping a Postgres Queue Healthy
Queues aside, mixing these loads will probably always be a bad idea unless your database gives you really fine control over cache/buffer pools, so the tables you run analytics on can't dirty the entire cache.
winrid··on I ported Mac OS X to the Nintendo Wii
The Wii UI looked fine and was very easy to understand, too.
winrid··on Ubuntu now requires more RAM than Windows 11
(and yes I tried linux, I don't think my users would have the patience to deal with the sleep/wake issues :) )
winrid··on Ubuntu now requires more RAM than Windows 11
Aren't they usually all preloaded to prevent pop-in (or using some sort of heuristic)?

anyways, I bet there's like a million little buffers all over the place in the graphics stack. It would be neat to go through all that and just see how slim you could get it, even if it broke a bunch of stuff.

winrid··on LittleSnitch for Linux
Related - I'm working on launching Watch.ly[0] (human-in-the-loop for remotely approving network and file system access for agents) in the next week or so. It works similarly, via eBPF (although we can also fall back to NFQUEUE). Supporting 5.x+ linux kernels[1], osx, and windows.

Did not know about LittleSnitch, will definitely check it out.

winrid··on Show HN: We built a camera only robot vacuum for less than 300$ (Well almost)
They're terrible. A $200 SLAM equipped vacuum (like open box or something off eBay) will do in 15mins what those took an hour to do
winrid··on Music for Programming
JimTV on YT is great too
winrid··on Ubuntu now requires more RAM than Windows 11
Higher res icons probably add a couple hundred megs alone
winrid··on Ubuntu now requires more RAM than Windows 11
Win11 IOT runs great on 4gb if that matters :) I have a few machines in the field running it and my java app, still over a gig free usually.
winrid··on OpenAI closes funding round at an $852B valuation
True. I was thinking more of power users. Do you think Opus level capabilities will run on your average laptop in a year? I think that's pretty far away if ever.
winrid··on OpenAI closes funding round at an $852B valuation
Probably because it reads a little like an LLM and also has an emdash
winrid··on OpenAI closes funding round at an $852B valuation
Not really. Most people won't self host.
winrid··on Copilot edited an ad into my PR
It already does that, too, with the co-author
winrid··on Desk for people who work at home with a cat
She doesn't even like to chew plastic. She will just sit there and lick plastic bins.
winrid··on Desk for people who work at home with a cat
My cat also likes to lick plastic, but they're plastic containers. No idea why.
winrid··on Should QA exist?
QA should always exist. The question is just do you want to pay for them. Usually the preferred gaslighting is "without QA devs will do better testing", but it's always about money.
winrid··on JCal – Jeffrey Epstein's Activities Recreated in Google Calendar
Will we get jGraveyard :) https://killedbygoogle.com
winrid··on I created my first AI-assisted pull request
Yeah I mean, now you know how managers feel? :)

spend all day talking to people (except it's LLMs) and not sure if you accomplished anything, but people seem happy

The plus side is for your personal things like this you don't have to use it of course!

winrid··on Node.js worker threads are problematic, but they work great for us
You like limitations, which is ok, I'll take a better toolset.

You can not limit yourself when you need more but still follow these patterns in any other language.

winrid··on How BYD got EV chargers to work almost as fast as gas pumps
Yeah he was encouraging young people to go into debt and then was publicly critical of the pushback against him, two big no nos
winrid··on Xiaomi launches next-gen SU7 with 902 km range and Lidar, still undercuts Tesla
the sensors on my robot vacuum are an upgrade over whatever Tesla has
winrid··on Java 26 is here
Lazy Constants looked interesting. The impl uses unsafe: https://github.com/openjdk/jdk/blob/master/src/java.base/sha...
winrid··on Java 26 is here
But with graal isn't the min compile time on avg hardware like a minute?
winrid··on Java 26 is here
I have way more experience with java on android than Flutter, and Flutter so far has been a breeze.
winrid··on Java 26 is here
What if you have a mobile app? Rest APIs? The argument doesn't work. Every backend language has ways to generate specs/types/clients from the APIs code.
winrid··on Comparing Python Type Checkers: Typing Spec Conformance
Mypy still best for Django
winrid··on MCP Is Dead; Long Live MCP
Many products provide MCP servers to connect LLMs. For example I can have claude examine things through my ahrefs account without me using the UI etc
winrid··on 1M context is now generally available for Opus 4.6 and Sonnet 4.6
True. I retract my sentiment :D
