winrid··on Vermell – Minimal, dependency-free C++ web framework using epoll
You need examples for actually using different databases.
winrid··on Fastpotify
Most immediate mode does a scene graph diff so it's not that bad

I have a custom IM GUIs based ide thing in C++ that uses like .2% of my 10yo CPU.

winrid··on Haiku R1/beta6 has been released
What do you use the netbook for?
winrid··on Mark Zuckerberg's Social Reckoning
People worked that hard when families often had 3 or more kids. The difference is one parent could afford to not work. We've let corporations "optimize" that away.
winrid··on Mark Zuckerberg's Social Reckoning
Are you referencing people that killed themselves because someone was mean to them on social media, or something more??
winrid··on Debian votes to allow "responsible use of generative AI"
Nope you just don't care to know. Stop making excuses.
winrid··on EVE Online moves to Python 3
Python 3 will likely be faster by itself.
winrid··on Debian votes to allow "responsible use of generative AI"
They're not dumb. They just don't care. They didn't before either. Now they just have an easy excuse.
winrid··on GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven
One of the pieces of software I sell is motorsports timing software [0], it has a GUI for newbs, but at the bottom of every window is a little bar that shows the list of shortcuts. People pick them up quickly!

And it's auto generated from the UI code. It still surprises me how many people just prefer the mouse anyway, though. But the option is there!

winrid··on Saving 100 terabytes of memory by optimizing 1.1.1.1's DNS cache
Yeah with snappy they probably could get like 30% savings (I bet domains don't compress well) without much more cpu usage.

Alternatively a btree somehow they can take advantage of prefix compression

winrid··on Saving 100 terabytes of memory by optimizing 1.1.1.1's DNS cache
I saved an employer $4m/yr, entirely myself. I think I got a 10k bonus.
winrid··on Disruption with Some GitHub Services – Resolved
You can do that. It's called vitess/citus ^_^

Mongo will auto failover if you have 3+ replicas. Primary knowledge is abstracted into the driver or query router level depending on setup.
winrid··on What Is a Syslog Server?
That's indeed pretty rare IME :)
winrid··on ElevenLabs, TwelveLabs, ThirteenLabs
done :)
winrid··on ElevenLabs, TwelveLabs, ThirteenLabs
There's also https://nolabs.ai which I just now discovered thanks to this, which is a competitor to my own https://watch.ly
winrid··on I ran Photoshop on a £0.60 computer chip
You can get an early gen i3 for a couple bucks and it will run modern PS, too.
winrid··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
I wanted a physical copy, good ones are a few hundred bucks.
winrid··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
I have a copy of Michael Abrash's Graphics Programming Black Book (it's like 1k+ pages) with DESTROY written in red on the sides. I appreciate that someone saved it and sold it to me for cheap :)
winrid··on The August 17 outage
This will result in pretty low quality software.

I've had opus 5 along with its AI code reviewer agree to do some pretty stupid shit.

winrid··on How a giant battery is transforming a town centre in Cannington, Ontario
For Halloween they should fill it with fake bodies and set the lights to green. Matrix battery!
winrid··on Cerebras CS-4
No but dedicated server prices will likely drop or at least you'll get more for your money
winrid··on Ask HN: GitHub employees what's going on? Why?
That doesn't answer the question at all. I suspect most components are already horizontally scalable, if not, which ones? That would be an interesting discussion for HN.
winrid··on Cerebras CS-4
On the plus side, lots of cheap servers to swoop up :)
winrid··on California's new tire efficiency rules could save drivers $1B a year
Gas tax is how we originally built the whole highway system actually (that and bonds).
winrid··on California's new tire efficiency rules could save drivers $1B a year
Yes, but for tires, they explicitly make exceptions for summer tires etc here.
winrid··on California's new tire efficiency rules could save drivers $1B a year
Probably the weirdest thing about this is the state doing something that results in it getting less tax money. This was lobbied for by the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Union of Concerned Scientists.
winrid··on California's new tire efficiency rules could save drivers $1B a year
It's "on average", so no, you still can.

And what are they gonna do if you just go to the tire store and say I want X tires? So of course none of this will be enforced. It's just to provide the little leaf indicator.

winrid··on California's new tire efficiency rules could save drivers $1B a year
Yeah, the Philips EyeComfort Flicker Free bulbs. Which HD used to sell. Now it's 90% a couple other brands.

The problem is landlords and normal people just go to home depot so every time I move it's a giant replace bulbs fiasco (or even replacing fixtures).

winrid··on California's new tire efficiency rules could save drivers $1B a year
Same. It seems like they will just give them one leaf marking and not outlaw them outright, though?
