wink··on The IRIX 6.5.7M (sgi) source code
That reminds me about some irc channel around 25 years ago where we had this odd guy running IRIX and occasionally sending us screenshots.

Most people were on Windows, some of us were running Linux, but IRIX seemed odd even to us, with our mainstream DEs like enlightenment or KDE or windowmaker :D

wink··on Apple: Enough Is Enough
The permissions thing regarding Accessibility or Network Access is the worst. Half the popups make no sense (even to a programmer) and it just feels clunky. (Bonus point: why is a tiling window manager or anything controlling windows or controls even sorted under Accessibility?)

I recently wanted to control some things with a MIDI device (mostly hardware mute for Slack/Teams etc) and need AppleScript for that.

But of course `osascript` is a different thing than the `Script Editor` and if you want to add a binary in the dialog you click the + button as described in the manual but of course it does not give you a way to select /usr/bin or /bin - just the view with Applications etc. Showing "hidden" files or dirs is easier on Windows and that says a lot.

(I suppose there must be a way, but I gave up finding it and just exported my stuff as an App in ~/Applications, I can add those.)

wink··on Apple: Enough Is Enough
I was recently made aware you should be able to use Powertoys (as maybe the only way) to remove the innate win+space shortcut and override it with e.g. your launcher.

This works... it shows the launcher. But I still find myself with the wrong language selected every couple days, I have a feeling it does not fully work when I use win+space inside an RDP connection or.. somewhere else.

Mildly infuriating if you can't just disable OS-level shortcuts.

wink··on System76 on Age Verification Laws
> Didn't regulating cigarettes kind of work?

I am not sure what time or country you are talking about but when I grew up (Germany in the 90s) we officially could only buy cigarettes from age 16 (or 18?) and 50% of my friends smoked. So that did absolutely nothing.

Later (I think, man it's been a while) the vending machines needed a driver's license or id to verify the age and guess what, as long as you had access to a single person over the age of 18 you could still get cigarettes.

Stepping away from the cigarette topic... I think mixing the two topics does not make sense.

First one is: Is there stuff on the internet that kids should not be exposed to without supervision? I don't have a strong opinion, I don't have kids. Probably not, but I am not even interested in discussing this

Second one is: Will some stupid laws like the mentioned ones help in any way? Maybe a little, probably not really and only for kids who don't find a workaround. Will they have catastrophic side effects and thus are not worth implementing for minimal gain? 100% yes.

wink··on Making Firefox's right-click not suck with about:config
I don't care about the tone or any inconsistencies, it's a good list.
wink··on Building a new Flash
The versioning was indeed a bit of a pain, also anything with dynamic input.

I was pretty proud of a solution where we could feed a web CMS that had a flash and a html version with the same editable text fields. IIRC you could grab the input of some fields from a text file and Flash didn't care where these came from, so on save the CMS just spit out a bunch of text files in a folder. That must have been around 2001.

wink··on Does that use a lot of energy?
I think you simply can't predict any number without really measuring it.

Ryzen + GPU + 1h of gaming, but 3 screens attached.

still a "desktop computer" - stuff in the browser can spike GPU wattage, but I don't think it will be meaningfully different over several hours of true idle..

My problem is more like: I could measure that, but I'd have to recable everything to have the power meter behind the power strip with just PC + screens... which I will probably do at some point, but it involves redoing 50% of the cables in this room.

wink··on Welcome (back) to Macintosh
I don't remember ever having external accessory issues, I don't use a track pad, battery life is fine (although I will admit macs seem to do better) and the ZFS one is just odd. Literally first time I hear this because while it sure would be nice... everyone uses btrfs or xfs or even ext4 with FDE without any problems for the last.. 15 years? Just one FS apparently has some issues?

Maybe your definition of broken is just as subjective as mine (aka I don't remember ever seeing window management so bad as OSX since fvwm)

wink··on Bet on German Train Delays
So 3h of sitting on the floor because there's no seat after a canceled one?

I mean yes, better than no transport, but it's ridiculous. And if you have an appointment in the morning, 2h of delay are a deal breaker.

wink··on Lenovo’s new ThinkPads score 10/10 for repairability
I would agree if I booted the preinstalled Windows even once and not install Linux the minute it arrives.

Like, no, we should absolutely not forget that, but the impact for me is low, and I prefer to have the superior hardware.

wink··on MacBook Air with M5
> Why the restriction to laptops?

The last company that was willing to give me a non-laptop desktop... I left in 2005. (with one exception where I simply did not ask)

Not even if "1k EUR desktop + 200 EUR netbook" would have cost less than a beefy laptop.

No, I don't know why.

wink··on The Xkcd thing, now interactive
Not sure. It's not it being unstable, it's small bricks moving bigger stuff to the side and maybe even upward. If I missed the joke I just don't find it funny.
wink··on The beauty and terror of modding Windows
The most ridiculous thing is that you were simply able to move the taskbar in Win 10 for sure, in Win7 kinda sure and maybe longer... I still don't get why they thought removing this harmless feature would make sense.
wink··on British Columbia is permanently adopting daylight time
I get your point and it's certainly and interesting one. But my point was less "oh my, this is unbelievable" but more a question of how much impact it has on everyday life. Again (like in the other thread) quoting Wikipeda, I see ~10k in the Hopi Reservation and 165k in the Navajo Nation, that's not a lot of people.

But of course your point with Arizona stands and I'm wondering if people do mind. Glancing at the map, the only major city just at the border is Las Vegas and I don't assume a lot of cross-border commutes there.

wink··on British Columbia is permanently adopting daylight time
Yes, but my experience tells me that you'll interact (on a level where timezones matter) much more with people in your country than in others - and this has nothing to do with small states vs big provinces, I don't know enough about Canada if every big company has offices in Vancouver an Toronto (or Ottawa, Montreal) that work closely together.
wink··on British Columbia is permanently adopting daylight time
I know it's big (I've just not seen it myself), but also it's only 5m people in BC if I can believe Wikipedia. That's like a big city. Maybe that actually makes it less of a problem though, we simply don't know :)
wink··on The Xkcd thing, now interactive
the weird physics are mildly infuriating. still funny though
wink··on The Case for Apolitical Tech Spaces
basic human rights are not preferred politics.
wink··on British Columbia is permanently adopting daylight time
I'm thinking more 'companies in the same country working together' - physical distance does not really matter, imho. Many countries span 1000km and unless traveling in person you don't care if it's east-west or north-south. Coordinating meetings and opening times is different.
wink··on Daily Driving GrapheneOS
Same here - all the German banks I know of the phone app is mostly for 2FA, but you can also use it for banking, if you like.

In my case it's also the 2FA for credit card usage (as I have the visa/mc via my bank), not only bank transfers.

wink··on British Columbia is permanently adopting daylight time
Ignoring the fact itself, doing this in a single province and not the whole country is the really wild thing for me (as a European). I have opinions about DST but having it different per German state sounds much more horrible than anything we have now, no matter how complicated the rules are.
wink··on Motorola announces a partnership with GrapheneOS
> Does it last more than 2 years?

I originally didn't want to comment out of personal spite... but I once bought a motorola phone that got its last update (security or not) 23 months after launch.

They're on my shit list now.

wink··on Never buy a .online domain
Or just incompetence, I had to lobby to get .org unblocked for mail at some CS faculty of a (not my) university, 20 years ago.
wink··on Bus stop balancing is fast, cheap, and effective
I live in a European city and I just used Google Maps to roughly measure the distance between the bus stops on the two lines I often use:

350, 350, 300, 250

650, 250, 300, 300, 350

It's fine. But we do have proper sidewalks between those.

wink··on Why the KeePass format should be based on SQLite
Yes, I just felt I had to specify further besides "I encountered problems that didn't seem to be inherent problems" but "no problems" would have been dishonest.
wink··on NPM install is stealing your passwords – I built a tool to catch it
Isn't this exactly what `ignore-scripts=true` in your .npmrc should be avoiding with npm 11? Although I am still not 100% sure if it would work in `~/.npmrc` for external packages...
wink··on Why the KeePass format should be based on SQLite
I've been syncing my kdbx files with syncthing for many years and I have had a couple of inexplicable conflicts.

Most probable reason would be that I ended up editing on the wrong machine while being offline or having it open on another one, so user error. But I don't know.

In any case, the only 2 moving parts were KeePassXC (I think, not sure when I moved on from KeePass) and syncthing. But most importantly, it was easily fixed every time, no broken file - which points me more into a syncthing diverge.

Otherwise, no, apparently no issues with kdx itself, or I wouldn't have been able to merge these problems. (which brings me to my pet peeve, a good working merge is missing...)

wink··on The dance floor is disappearing in a sea of phones
Which would prevent prevent people from snapping 1-2 pictures per band in a 4h concert, which I would kinda not like. Maybe it would improve the experience enough though, or you'd have to move to the bar area and take your one pic there.
wink··on An ARM Homelab Server, or a Minisforum MS-R1 Review
> a 256GB SSD with 16GB RAM is quite useless for a home server

Not that I would buy it new, no, but 16GB for a home server can be quite fine. If I didn't have the 2x3 TB NAS disks (sounds ridiculously small now, right) - that would actually be enough.

wink··on I found a vulnerability. they found a lawyer
First of all, hardly anyone cares (default email signatures etc.pp even if the people don't want that - but you said legally bindign, and I think that just usually never happens.).

And second, at least in Germany it's also somewhat of a bullshit situation that 80% of the people who do a "normal" Computer Science degree don't have that (Diplom-Informatiker/M.Sc), but the 20% who happen to study at a certain uni in a certain degree (that is mostly related, but not the default Computer Science/Software Engineering one) are/were getting their "Diplom-Ingenieur".
