wingmanjd··on OpenSearch 3.0 Released
Have you tried out Graylog? Their core product does pretty decently at my $DAYJOB.
wingmanjd··on WordPress Is in Trouble
GravCMS is a flat-file CMS (content is saved to markdown, making it quite portable if you decide it's not for you). There isn't wiki-functionality (auto-create pages that don't exist), however.

I wrote an exporter from WP to Grav [1].

wingmanjd··on OpenAI Releases Canvas
I haven't had the same experience.

PopOS, 22.04 Firefox Also 64GB of total RAM.

wingmanjd··on Show HN: Jumping Julia Maze
Are these always solvable? The handful of 4x4's I've had don't seem to be.
wingmanjd··on OK, I can partly explain the LLM chess weirdness now
MaiaChess [1] supposedly plays at a specific ELO, making similar mistakes a human would make at those levels.

It looks like they have 3 public bots on lichess.org: 1100, 1500, and 1900

wingmanjd··on MdBook – a command line tool to create books with Markdown
It's not static, but I've enjoyed GravCMS.
wingmanjd··on Salt Project rapidly migrates package repository to packages.broadcom.com
First saw a post [1] linked via Mastodon regarding the migration. The time window feels short between announcement and the move.

Also concerned as the salt admin at $DAYJOB about the falloff of commits to the salt github repo over the course of the past few years.

wingmanjd··on Wordpress.org Login: "I am not affiliated with WP Engine in any way"
I've enjoyed GravCMS [1], another php based CMS that used markdown for its content instead of a database.

For those interested in migrating away, I wrote an exporter from WordPress to Grav [2], which, given recent events, I've pulled back out and am updating again.

wingmanjd··on Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) Deprecation
I know of many institutions that rely on wsus as a way of locking down external traffic from sensitive areas on the corporate network. Granting these machines internet access is often undesirable.

I'm not sure what you mean by modern clients, but we have numerous WinServer 2022 connecting to our internal wsus servers.

wingmanjd··on Securing a Linux Server
Fail2ban can also block ips for other services that may be listening beyond just ssh.
wingmanjd··on Microsoft's 'Recall' feature can't be uninstalled after all
Nope, not enjoying this at all. We're already looking at full OS alternatives for our workloads.
wingmanjd··on Argdown, like Markdown for argument mapping
Whoah, that's a neat tool! I definitely need to implement this with my scripts.

Thanks!

wingmanjd··on Type in Morse code by repeatedly slamming your laptop shut
Wasn't there a Cold War era communication method accomplished via a car with squeaky brakes? I think it was nicknamed "the duck"?
wingmanjd··on Toon3D: Seeing cartoons from a new perspective
Is this a Chrome thing? My Firefox on Windows doesn't autoplay the videos for me.
wingmanjd··on Yuzu emulator developers settle Nintendo lawsuit, pay $2.4M in damages
Repo URL is now dead.
wingmanjd··on Building a USB SNES Controller
I have four of the bluetooth SN30's for couch co-op games on my SteamDeck. I agree that if I switched between devices often (like my son's switch) I'd need a lookup table for the power-on chording. Mine have the key combinations printed onto the label on the back.

Fwiw, the ones I have remember their last pairing setup, so I only need to power them back on via the "Start" button.

wingmanjd··on Little File Explorer – File Manager for Android 1.0 and above
Ooo, FX seems nice. I definitely like a lot of its interface concepts.
wingmanjd··on Little File Explorer – File Manager for Android 1.0 and above
I'm a long-time user of Solid Explorer. It's my favorite file manager app. I even have it setup to access my Nextcloud files (via webdav). The dual pane layout of SE makes copying/pasting/moving files easier than most others I've tried.
wingmanjd··on OpenBao – FOSS Fork of HashiCorp Vault
We use consul/vault/nomad at $DAYJOB. It's been a mostly stable platform for us.

Me the other hand, I can assure you... I am not reliable. /jk

wingmanjd··on Ask HN: What side projects landed you a job?
It wasn't a project, per se, but my personal blog on BlogSpot. I was mostly documenting my foray into using Ubuntu as I started the blog around 2006-ish. It mostly surrounded bumps and hurdles I faced when trying to get my Windows games to run in wine. I posted some (funny to me) memes along the way, too.

I was looking to switch careers from the current electrical engineering job to IT around 2008, and I found out after getting the job that members of the hiring committee had read through my blog and thought I'd be a good fit. I'm very thankful to that group.

wingmanjd··on RPG Engine for the Nintendo 64
Maybe Goldeneye? But yeah, there aren't a lot that come to mind.
wingmanjd··on Super Mario RPG is an endearing, perplexing relic
Do you know of other games can you do this in?
wingmanjd··on Super Mario RPG is an endearing, perplexing relic
One feature I loved was that player characters that weren't in the current main party would still gain XP from battles, even if they weren't involved. It allowed me not to have to choose early on who would be the party member and avoid my terrible case of analysis paralysis.
wingmanjd··on First 96-Core AMD Zen 4 Threadripper Tests Show Utter Domination over Intel
"One big disparity between the three machines was the Zen 4 machine was outfitted with 512GB of memory, while its competition had just 128GB each"

This feels like cheating to me.

wingmanjd··on HashiCorp did it backwards
A small counterpoint:

My $DAYJOB's architecture is completely self-hosted (Proxmox, Nomad, etc). I would not prefer to have some external tool managing that infrastructure.

wingmanjd··on Canonical LXD forked by former project leader stgraber
Does anyone know how the latest changes/fork affect downstream software like Proxmox, or is it too soon to tell?
wingmanjd··on Use multiple Git SSH identities on a single computer
I'd love for something like this for my workflow, but I don't keep my keys on my disk currently, so I don't think it would work for me.

I currently use KeepassXC to manage my ssh keys, but then get tripped up with the multiple identities sometimes. I have separate keys for personal vs work on github/ gitlab, and when I attempt to perform git push/ pulls, I often have the wrong one in my ssh-agent's keyring.

wingmanjd··on Dear Red Hat: Are you dumb?
The database engine IBM DB2 didn't (doesn't?) officially support Centos. It had to be RHEL.
wingmanjd··on Dear Red Hat: Are you dumb?
Fwiw, we moved (are moving) on from RHEL and derivatives to Debian/ Ubuntu servers at $DAYJOB. We were planning on deploying Centos 8 before the Stream debacle came along.
wingmanjd··on Effective June 7, 2026, Autodesk will no longer sell nor support EAGLE
> It used to be good enough for a saint, but now it's good enough for a whiny picky person such as myself.

I really like your description of patience in software. I think I'll borrow this for future things I want others to try.
