wingerlang··on Ask HN: Why do banking apps care about your phone OS
Where I live you could barely survive without the bank app for daily payments. Sometimes is has maintenance around 1AM, which often coincides with trying to pay a bill after a night out. Causes some scrambling to find cash, or try another bank app.
wingerlang··on Show HN: App that asks ‘why?’ every time you unlock your phone
The point is that people don't stick with it. Bypassable versions works just as well as this, for a day or two until it becomes slightly annoying. Full lockout will work for a day or two as well, until it becomes annoying. The bypass here is simply that you never use it again.
wingerlang··on Show HN: I'm making a spiritual successor to Ski Free that runs in a browser
I am aware of this. I am talking about long and slow turns at the highest speed not having any nice feedback like snow or sounds.
wingerlang··on The size of BYD's factory
My point was more in how fast it has gone from 0 to every other car I see in a very short time.
wingerlang··on Show HN: I'm making a spiritual successor to Ski Free that runs in a browser
Maybe carving is the wrong word, but when I go fast and turn I expect to slide and make snow fly. There should be some effort required to turn, not in a bad way, but in a "I'm drifting!" way. That would be satisfying.
wingerlang··on The size of BYD's factory
I don't know about elsewhere in the world, but the amount of BYD's I see on the streets of Bangkoks today compared to say two years ago must be an 1000% increase. They are absolutely everywhere.
wingerlang··on Show HN: I'm making a spiritual successor to Ski Free that runs in a browser
Very fun, some suggestions:

- The ski lift is fun, gives a little break and immerses

- Off pist is just as clumsy-smooth-clumsy as in real life, fun to explore as well like in real life

- I wish I could get some carving feedback when going really fast

Maybe record some peoples sessions and play them back every now and then, psuedo-multiplier.

More secrets. I went all the way to the right / bottom and the payoff was not good.

Mobile app?

Daily/weekly leaderboards for some tracks that changes

wingerlang··on Ask HN: How do you communicate in a remote startup?
Same here. Slack provides answers way more often than Confluence. I tend to write conclusions to threads or discussion in a somewhat keyword heavy manner, simply so that I know I can search for it in a year or two.
wingerlang··on Show HN: I built a(nother) house optimized for LAN parties
I've got two keyboards with red switches, some basic foam and o-rings. It's still noisy, especially in a small home office.
wingerlang··on Ask HN: Life-changing purchases since 2020? (Under $100 and under $1000)
> And how does one dry this without toilet paper?

Normally you still use some small amount of toilet paper to dry away most of the water.

wingerlang··on Ask HN: Junior dev in charge of rewriting 500k line PHP app. Looking for advice
I have a license for PHPStorm, so I agree that it is worth it, but what exactly do you mean by browsing classes/functions?
wingerlang··on All the data can be yours: reverse engineering APIs
I think the word usage is tongue in cheek
wingerlang··on Show HN: I built a side project to manage my side projects
Can you point me to some native-level feeling PWAs that you regularly use, or even know of? Genuinely curious as an iOS native developer for a decade+.
wingerlang··on Show HN: Gleam.so – Beautiful OG images in seconds, no design skills needed
Preview images that shows up when you share a link on various platforms.
wingerlang··on Show HN: Replacicon – Create and customize app icons on macOS
If I would guess, it was easy enough to train the model to recognize non-square-ish icons and float them to the top. I think it's a pretty neat and shows some extra level of care has gone into the app.
wingerlang··on Show HN: I launched a super cheap and simple to use OCR tool for macOS
It correctly OCR'd it for me.
wingerlang··on My first game with Carimbo, my homemade engine
> Making a game engine is a very concrete task, in that you can map out the steps and many of them are well-defined.

This doesn't sound right to me. Surely making an engine has thousands of different choices to make and thousands of rabbit holes to get lost in.

wingerlang··on Virtualizing iOS on Apple Silicon
Certainly not paying anyones rent, but I've paid them a couple of bucks over the years to test software on their VMs, since they can come jailbroken out of the box.
wingerlang··on Show HN: A macOS app to prevent sound quality degradation on AirPods
I don't think App Store supports that. But if you're interested, it's a planned feature in my macOS license management SDK (padlockSDK.com - pricing is placeholder, its free until I know if it's of interest for people).
wingerlang··on Ask HN: What's an interesting software development niche?
I'll just answer the title, as I am not sure I'd call it work or even recommend it. But, I've been developing software for jailbroken iOS on and off for over a decade. It definitely fits the interesting niche category as it has a nice mix of reverse engineering and software development.
wingerlang··on Show HN: Time Flies
Guaranteed to have been done in Asia already, an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIs8t3ro9Fw
wingerlang··on A MiniGolf game for Palm OS
Once I got a Zire 31 with PalmOS for Christmas. It became quite a fun treasure hunt to find free games and software for it. And I say treasure hunt because it was like looking for gems among piles of garbage as far as I can remember.
wingerlang··on iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
I am happy with 60hz but I did stumble upon a 120hz phone the other week and it was instantly noticeably nicer, so much so that my next phone likely will be whatever iPhone has 120hz.
wingerlang··on Ask HN: Windows Recall / Rewind.ai Alternatives?
The older one, you might be thinking of TimeSnapper? It has a more limited macOS version.

I am developing https://ScreenMemory.app for macOS which lies somewhere between Rewind.ai and TimeSnapper for macOS.

wingerlang··on Ask HN: Who's building an AI-free product?
I'm building an app where the competition basically is all about AI. It's a "continuous screen recorder" to look back at what you've worked on over the days or weeks. https://ScreenMemory.app

All other similar apps (Rewind.ai is the most notable, or maybe Microsofts Recall) basically focus (focused?) on summarizing your day through AI. Personally I am fine with a smaller scope, instead focusing on the visual aspect of a day.

wingerlang··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
License key management for developers of macOS applications. https://padlocksdk.com/

I've been building some macOS apps lately, and I kept duplicating and adding onto the license key backend. I figured I should build it more properly so I built a Saas for myself (and finally took the step into Laravel at the same time).

I have no costumers except myself. If anyone wants a free account in exchange for feedback I am happy to help set it up.

wingerlang··on Ask HN: Trying to find an old HN post, failing at search
Is this an AI generated comment?
wingerlang··on Show HN: Griddd – Create a digital presence in minutes
You should showcase the product itself, right now I have 0 idea how it looks like. Is the price monthly, yearly, onetime? FAQ told me to send an email, but the email itself it hidden in the footer.
wingerlang··on Frame.work laptop now available in Denmark, Finland, and Sweden
Agreed, takes honestly a very short time to get used to it but the benefits are large, as a programmer at least. I don't think I would ever go back to the other layout again.
wingerlang··on Aphantasia: I can not picture things in my mind
On the other hand I have a hard time believing people actually fully see visual information in their head.
