wingerlang··on Show HN: Trailmarks – Huge, browser-based, Carmen Sandiego-style travel game
I took the initial "type" to be more of a difficulty or question-types, not about missions. Even so, clicking the bottom I get this:

> The mission of your game. Complete all your levels and achievements, and you can return to London a success. Can you go to London yet? Nope!

Which is both confusing (I am in London) and aimless ("Do everything"). Definitely needs some more attention.

I also wish I could click-and-drag the cards, or simply click to focus, keeps tripping me up.

wingerlang··on Show HN: Trailmarks – Huge, browser-based, Carmen Sandiego-style travel game
Nice, definitely gave backpacker vibes.

Some issues:

- It doesn't "feel" like a game, it felt a bit aimless. Maybe some missions like travel to X countries, do Y things, within Z starting budget. - The "X" at the top of the screen feels disjointed. - The popup covers the pin sometimes. - I wanted to click the departures to travel onwards. - Clicking the true/false feels odd, I was not sure whether I correctly guessed or not sometimes.

Is this genre alive at all nowadays?

wingerlang··on Recall going back into Windows
I made ScreenMemory. Usually the performance issues happen when users have high resolution monitors (often multiple) and set it to take screenshots very often (like every 2 seconds). It's fair because that's sort of how Rewind works, but ScreenMemory is generally built with longer intervals in mind, the default is 60s. I use this on my 2016 MBP without performance issues.

I have some improvements in the pipeline for lower capture intervals though.

wingerlang··on Show HN: My mom was unimpressed with my blog. What do you think?
It feels like it is primarily a creative outlet.
wingerlang··on I struggled with Git, so I'm making a game to spare others the pain
I don't know how others use it, but to me the staging area only lives for X seconds and acts as a last stop to simply select the exact changes and lines I want to actually commit. With a GUI, it becomes crystal clear as to what it is.

From what I can tell about JJ's split command, it seems like it does the same thing except you're working backwards to split out changes into another commit.

Both seems fine, I just don't see the complexity with the staging area (unless you're a beginner who's been told to only use the CLI at all costs).

wingerlang··on I struggled with Git, so I'm making a game to spare others the pain
Not OP, but I've been using SourceTree for over a decade. I've tried loads, but the only one that I have semi-moved to recently is Fork.
wingerlang··on I struggled with Git, so I'm making a game to spare others the pain
What is wrong with staging? I don't even consider staging until it is time to commit, at which point it is a little area to gather the exact changes you need.

People adding a fun little visual gag to their own personal website is not active malice to you.
wingerlang··on EA Open Sources Command and Conquer: Red Alert, along with other games
Your assumed scenario was a magic button to recompile it.
wingerlang··on macOS Tips and Tricks (2022)
Only one AI section out of 12 total sections, and while the second section has an AI example, it's only one out of five.

It's basically Alfred with more (?) functionality. Which is basically Spotlight with more functionality. Which is basically a tool to "do stuff" from anywhere on the device.

wingerlang··on EA Open Sources Command and Conquer: Red Alert, along with other games
Same with Red Alert (etc) through the modern rewrite OpenRA (https://www.openra.net/). Similarly there is a guy FiveAces who has been commenting videos for nearly a decade.
wingerlang··on EA Open Sources Command and Conquer: Red Alert, along with other games
I am sure there are people who has moved to macOS that grew on playing eg. Red Alert 1 who gladly would pay some amount of money to instantly own and play it again for some nostalgia.

And by this I mean myself.

wingerlang··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (February 2025)
Not sure to be honest, I know a lot of these tools popped up and swiftly disappeared. It wouldn't surprise me if there is a Linux version still alive though, try searching for "Rewind.ai alternative Linux".
wingerlang··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (February 2025)
https://screenmemory.app is my current project as of a year or so. Records your screen continuously and lets you look back at it through a GUI. I use it myself to recap days or weeks at work, mostly.
wingerlang··on Half-Life
My favorite pasttime in HL/CS back in the day was bhopping and kz_. To some degree I think it has too responsive movement. I recently went back to play HL and I fell down so many crates due to the instant movement, having been used to some inertia in games since.
wingerlang··on Johnny.Decimal – A system to organise your life
Similar here, documents goes into the documents drawer. Digital documents has been going into /Dropbox/docs/$current_year (without much organization within them). New year, new folder.

I assumed this is what they are trying to do with Deadlock [0]?

wingerlang··on Show HN: Pushpin, an iOS client for Pinboard, is now open source
Very cool. I also come across people having used my apps for literal years, it's a small subset but they are distinct and super appreciated.

Hopefully there is some progress, but if not, I suppose it's a success already anyway, and less weight on your shoulders.

wingerlang··on Show HN: Pushpin, an iOS client for Pinboard, is now open source
Nice. I am a fellow "more than a decade" maintainer of an app, and it's been fun. Some questions come to mind.

- Do you have some sort of community around the app?

- Do you have a steady (or maybe dwindling) stream of feedback?

- Any power users?

- Have you tried to reinvent the app in any way? (My app is on the third "sequel" where each one gathered some renewed interest).

- What made you open source it? Do you feel like you're "letting it go" by open sourcing it? (I could imagine myself feeling this way).

wingerlang··on Ask HN: Are people still writing commercial software for desktop PCs?
Do you not use a desktop environment? Loads of software is being made (and I only know the macOS side of it). Window managers, compression tools, utilities, powerhouse tools like Photoshop, text editors, IDEs, etc.

I myself build software in this space and generally its productivity-ish-tools.

Here's a list of 70 macOS apps that received updates _today_ https://macupdater.com/app_updates/index-2025-01-27.html

wingerlang··on We're bringing Pebble back
> why unify the software and make it easy for the consumer

I honestly believe that selling them as separate products is easier. Both for the company who can focus in on the advertising, and for 99% of the customers who can go straight to their hobby.

That being said, it does look like the very first watch on their website is specifically in its own multi-sport category.

wingerlang··on Show HN: I made a mini golf in my lunch time
Highlighting the valid squares to shoot to would be nice
wingerlang··on What do you think about using a game engine for UI?
I live in Thailand and I've seen _government software_ built in Unity. Please do not do this. Convention, accessibility, and feel, is simply not there.
wingerlang··on Show HN: Guess The Painter – A web based simple(idea) but hard to play game
Nice. Game looks nice, but I realized that I don't really know of any painters so I got out quite fast again. Maybe hints or straight up "J _ _ o r _ _" if hints aren't enough. Potentially turning it into a teaching tool as well, about these painters.
wingerlang··on Show HN: Guess The Painter – A web based simple(idea) but hard to play game
Feedback from someone who bounced within the first second because of the signup requirement. I would like the play it but honestly I couldn't care less about the leaderboards.
wingerlang··on Ask HN: Do you backup your Emails?
I once had a four year overdue reminder to setup gmail backups, still haven't set it up.
wingerlang··on Ask HN: Show your non-AI project
Yep, very similar. A host of tools similar have come (and gone) in the past year alone from what I've seen. Most of them seems to focus on the AI aspect though.

Fun fact, while the app is only a bit over a year old, I was doing something similar with a simple cron job nearly a decade ago: https://jontelang.com/blog/2015/08/15/automating-screenshots...

wingerlang··on Ask HN: Show your non-AI project
I've shared ScreenMemory [0] before, but I just released a 2.0 redesign so why not. It records your (macOS) screen and gives a calendar / timeline to explore. You can then revisit what you did. I use it daily and mainly to go through my day before standups, it's incredibly how much side-tracking I do and completely forget each day.

Tech is quite simple, all native frameworks from Apple. OCR included!

wingerlang··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2024 – Show and tell
I make macOS apps [0], the revenue is irregular but on average it fits the $500/m. The main driver is [1] ScreenMemory, which records your screens and allows you to navigate a timeline / calendar. Sort of a Rewind.ai alternative.
