winddude··on Someone bought 30 WordPress plugins and planted a backdoor in all of them
wow, I remember a time when hacker news had at least seemingly intelligent people and valid arguments.

bitcoin is forecast to uses about 150 TWh of electricity this year vs all other datacenter operations foretasted to use 1000 TWh. Bitcoin is esitimated to be about 52.4% sustainable energy (renewables plus nuclear) where datacenters are 42% sustainable energy.
winddude··on Moving from WordPress to Jekyll (and static site generators in general)
I did something similar, but killed my old WP blog. played around with 11ty, sveltekit, i eventually settled on hugo.
winddude··on Dropping Cloudflare for Bunny.net
considering the bunny.net site crashes, and fails to load with timeouts, good luck with that. Unfortunately having a monopoly in a CDN is kind of a benefit.
winddude··on Workers report watching Ray-Ban Meta-shot footage of people using the bathroom
Yea, but not a bad reminder to ridicule people who wear them, and if possible destroy on site.
winddude··on British Columbia is permanently adopting daylight time
And we're stoked!
winddude··on Using an engineering notebook
100% i've been using paper notebooks since I started coding
winddude··on Components will kill pages
I do like that idea of allowing flexible component rendering, especially if you're building a your own app with chat UI. The one problem would be like always standardisation, will chatUIs need to be like browser and follow standards? Or do they need to render JS, CSS, HTML as a component? What freedom do chatUIs allow the components?

Even so, ask, what's the end goal of the user? Does it even make sense to worry about UI if we're think autonomous agents that sole goal is to accomplish something defined by the user?

Delete!
winddude··on Another GitHub outage in the same day
I was wondering about that the other day, the sheer amount of code, repos, and commits being generated now with AI. And probably more large datasets as well.
winddude··on Learning from context is harder than we thought

  > But as impressive as these feats are, they obscure a simple truth: being a "test-taker" is not what most people need from an AI.
People have been bringing that up long before AI, on how schooling often tests on memorization and regurgitation of facts. Looking up facts is also a large part of the internet, so it is something that's in demand, and i believe a large portion of openAI/cluade prompts have a big overlap with google queries [sorry no source].

I haven't looked at the benchmark details they've used, and it may depend on the domain, empirically it seems coding agents improve drastically on unseen libs or updated libs with the latest documentation. So I think that a matter of the training sets, where they've been optimized with code documentation.

So the interim step until a better architecture is found is probably more / better training data.

winddude··on Product and design are the new bottlenecks
I'd be a lot more hesitant now if brin, gates or bezos invited me to a pizza party.
winddude··on Recreating Epstein PDFs from raw encoded attachments
not sure how I missed the url encoding. yea, fuck not sure I want to decode that PDF, and their's a high probability that that's a victims name.

Wonder why there's so many random case files in the files.

winddude··on Recreating Epstein PDFs from raw encoded attachments
I've checked for copy and paste, there's so many character flaws, their OCR must have sucked really bad, I may try with deepseekOCR or something. I mean the database would probably more searchable if someone ran every file through a better OCR.
winddude··on Recreating Epstein PDFs from raw encoded attachments
here's another few to decode,

https://www.justice.gov/epstein/files/DataSet%2010/EFTA01804...

https://www.justice.gov/epstein/files/DataSet%209/EFTA007755...

https://www.justice.gov/epstein/files/DataSet%209/EFTA004349...

and than this one judging by the name of the file (hanna something) and content of the email:

"Here is my girl, sweet sparkling Hanna=E2=80=A6! I am sure she is on Skype "

maybe more sinister (so be careful, i have no ideas what the laws are if you uncover you know what trump and Epstein were into)...

https://www.justice.gov/epstein/files/DataSet%2011/EFTA02715...

[Above is probably a legit modeling CV for HANNA BOUVENG, based on, https://www.justice.gov/epstein/files/DataSet%209/EFTA011204..., but still creepy, and doesn't seem like there's evidence of her being a victim]

winddude··on Recreating Epstein PDFs from raw encoded attachments
there are a few messaging conversations between FB agents early on that are kind of interesting. It would be very interesting to see them about the releases. I sometimes wonder if some was malicious compliance... ie, do a shitty job so the info get's out before it get re-redacted... we can hope...
winddude··on LinkedIn checks for 2953 browser extensions
a problem for linkedin != "a problem". The real problem for people is the back room data brokering linkedin and others do.
winddude··on [dead]
well I'm going to be bored.
winddude··on CISA’s acting head uploaded sensitive files into public version of ChatGPT
this administrations competence on anything and everything has been a kid eating glue
winddude··on Ross Stevens Donates $100M to Pay Every US Olympian and Paralympian $200k
nice sentiment, that it. Most of the financial challenges faced by athletes trying for the Olympics are immediate, affording to train, travel to compete, and gear. Especially in more niche sports, like bobsleigh, fencing, sailing, etc.
winddude··on Ross Stevens Donates $100M to Pay Every US Olympian and Paralympian $200k
> So his goal is to prevent money issues from being a thing getting in the way of athletes achieving. But he has structured it in a way that prevents the money from helping this goal.

Yup, the biggest challenge faced by most olympic athletes, and those doing an Olympic campaign, is affording to train, travel, gear, etc, especially in more niche sports, bobsleigh, etc.

winddude··on Ross Stevens Donates $100M to Pay Every US Olympian and Paralympian $200k
lol, what?
winddude··on Google AI Overviews cite YouTube more than any medical site for health queries
google search has been on a down slope for awhile, it's all been because they focused on maximizing profits over UX and quality.
winddude··on [dead]
"debating dicks is pointless" maybe that's why no one is debating you. All you provide is illogical arguments and logical fallacies, so there's nothing worth debating. You're guilty in your utterly flawed argument of everything you accuse the other side of.
winddude··on AI coding assistants are getting worse?
Not sure I agree with his tests, but I agree with the headline, I recently had cursor launch into seemingly endless loops of grepping and `cd` and `ls` files. This was in multiple new convos. I think it's they're trying to do to much, for two many "vibe coders", and the lighter weight version that did less were easier to steer to meet your architecture and needs.
winddude··on A tab hoarder's journey to sanity
great, another tab I'm going to keep open till I get around to it
winddude··on Australia begins enforcing world-first teen social media ban
I kind of get it, except youtube... which has much more educational, news, and long form content. Also also forcing face/age verification sounds ripe with issues.
winddude··on Show HN: Gemini Pro 3 imagines the HN front page 10 years from now
dear god, I wonder what the accuracy rate on these predictions will be "Does this work against the new smart-mattresses? Mine refuses to soften up unless I watch a 30-second ad for insurance." <https://sw.vtom.net/hn35/pages/90098444.html>
winddude··on Show HN: Gemini Pro 3 imagines the HN front page 10 years from now
disappointing I can't download the arxiv papaers. Otherwise nice work. Also, This made my day!!
