willthefirst··on The Difference Between a Button and a Link
> Should “Cancel” be a link? No! Its job is to close the edit view. Not only does making this a link incorrectly communicate its purpose—visually and otherwise—but it saddles the form “control” with lots of features, like bookmarking and middle-clicking, that have incorrect behavior.

I don’t get this. Cancel takes you back to the read-only view of the form. So if /resource/edit is the form, cancel just takes you to /resource.

So is this “performing an action” or “navigating somewhere”? Hard to tell. I’m saying that if cancelling a form edit just means ditching the local state to go back to the normal view, that should be a navigation.

Someone straighten this out for me.

willthefirst··on I’ve banned query strings
I mean…the site that broke should know what to do with arbitrary query strings. If your site breaks when someone puts in an invalid query string, that’s on you?
willthefirst··on Learn how to unleash the full potential of the type system of TypeScript
Great content. Give it me to me as a daily-dose newsletter :)
willthefirst··on Show HN: Create slide presentations with your voice
I recommend turning up your speakers and playing any keynote address in another window (eg. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmDYXaaT9sA). Chaos.
willthefirst··on Show HN: Create your own Codecademy-style lessons
Working now! This is great. As somebody interviewing right now, something like this would be great for drilling React concepts.

willthefirst··on Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project?
A giant permanent wall of text for and by the internet. Anyone can write on it.

willthefirst··on Are we too busy to enjoy life?
Definitely. But it's the healthy kind of pain, "ripping off the bandaid".
willthefirst··on Are we too busy to enjoy life?
I know right?! The language is simple and entertaining.

There's also a hilarious passage about a wealthy guy who gets carried everywhere, and becomes so numbed by luxury that he can't tell whether he's sitting down or not.

willthefirst··on Are we too busy to enjoy life?
For some age-tested wisdom on this topic, read Seneca's On The Shortness Of Life:

https://www.globalgreyebooks.com/ebooks/seneca/on-the-shortn...

"But one man is possessed by an avarice that is insatiable, another by a toilsome devotion to tasks that are useless; one man is besotted with wine, another is paralyzed by sloth; one man is exhausted by an ambition that always hangs upon the decision of others, another, driven on by the greed of the trader, is led over all lands and all seas by the hope of gain; some are tormented by a passion for war and are always either bent upon inflicting danger upon others or concerned about their own; some there are who are worn out by voluntary servitude in a thankless attendance upon the great; many are kept busy either in the pursuit of other men's fortune or in complaining of their own; many, following no fixed aim, shifting and inconstant and dissatisfied, are plunged by their fickleness into plans that are ever new; some have no fixed principle by which to direct their course, but Fate takes them unawares while they loll and yawn—so surely does it happen that I cannot doubt the truth of that utterance which the greatest of poets delivered with all the seeming of an oracle: 'The part of life we really live is small.'"

willthefirst··on Ask HN: How to stop overthinking everything in my life?

willthefirst··on HN, let's make the 'better email'
Thanks for your interest guys and gals. Would you be interested in talk ing tomorrow (Sunday) at 3pm PST on Google Hangout and discussing a possible project?
willthefirst··on HN, let's make the 'better email'
All these things. Let's talk, but wait for more people to get back.
willthefirst··on Ask HN: Are front-end developers really "developers"?
I think my question comes from the fact that FED's need to engage less than backenders with strict compsci concepts, unless we're writing JS. I think I meant to ask whether HTML/CSS and all the variants and elaborations count as "programming".
willthefirst··on Ask HN: Want to collaborate on a quick election themed website?
Cool! PM me at willthefirst@gmail.com, and I can explain what it's gonna be. We would need to get it done relatively soon, but I think it could be up and running by the end of the week.
willthefirst··on So long, Retina
The burn-in/ghosting issue only affects the earliest batch of screens. I just took my retina into the Apple store, and they will decapitate it and add a new screen for free. Annoying, but it doesn't affect all whole line.
willthefirst··on Could someone advise a new name for my Pinterest app?
Pintereasy.

You can send me a cake of your choosing.

willthefirst··on Ask HN: Best way to recover and deal with carpal tunnel?
interesting about the trackpad, my assumption was that the mouse was the best, but I've been using the trackpad recently and not using the actual click feature helps a bunch (click drags are a killer!) Thanks for the complete response.
willthefirst··on Via neo ITX android PC preorder now for 49$
So basically a Mac mini, but Android.
willthefirst··on Ask HN: Why is desktop text editing software still so bad?
Why? I would imagine that better and better autocorrect will make us want it more and more, not less and less. I'm just interested in why you would drop it.
willthefirst··on Light Table - a new IDE concept
Is something like this out? If it is, take my money now.
