willsmith72··on Show HN: I'm an airline pilot – I built interactive graphs/globes of my flights
Well shucks to my high school physics teacher
willsmith72··on The Effect of Noise on Sleep
On the contrary, we gain more by making faster decisions than we do by being 100% precise
willsmith72··on The Effect of Noise on Sleep
yes, that would be nice to have. but surely the data we have already would suggest for the benefit of our entire society, especially children (with the link between good sleep and mental development), we should incentivise thicker windows, better sills and other quick wins now
willsmith72··on The Effect of Noise on Sleep
what about a noise tax? my city has some electric buses and some ancient buses - the difference obviously is absolutely huge, but right now the financial incentives aren't there to upgrade the whole fleet
willsmith72··on Show HN: I'm an airline pilot – I built interactive graphs/globes of my flights
True, but is it counterbalanced by their ageing at least a few microseconds more slowly thanks to spending so much time closer to the speed of light?
willsmith72··on Learnings from building AI agents
yep completely agreed, how can that be the best example they chose to use?

If I reviewed that PR, absolutely I'd question why you're commenting that out. There better be a very good reason, or even a link to a ticket with a clear deadline of when it can be cleaned up/reverted

willsmith72··on Gemini CLI
less expensive than what? You can use CC on the $20 plan. If you're using the maximum of your $20 subscription usage every 4 hours every day, the equivalent API cost would be at least hundreds per month
willsmith72··on Gemini CLI
so what? I care about the quality of the result. They can do that however they want

A more credible argument is security and privacy, but I couldn't care less if they're managing to be best in class using haiku

willsmith72··on Gemini CLI
As a heavy Claude code user that's not really a selling point for me

Ultimately quality wins out with LLMs. Having switched a lot between openai, google and Claude, I feel there's essentially 0 switching cost and you very quickly get to feel which is the best. So until Claude has a solid competitor I'll use it, open source or not

willsmith72··on The hamburger-menu icon today: Is it recognizable?
You are violating one of the key principles from the article though by being bottom-right

(On a side-note, receiving no complaints doesn't mean things are usable)

Cool website though

willsmith72··on Meta invests $14.3B in Scale AI to kick-start superintelligence lab
Did they just buy a "head of AI" for 14b?
willsmith72··on We Fell Out of Love with Next.js and Back in Love with Ruby on Rails
Not really. If you use react router, you can have a client side js app and add SSR with a couple of hours work. You have your cake and eat it
willsmith72··on Ask HN: How do you gather feedback from your users?
This is what I'm most curious. How do you avoid getting in their way? I assume a very small button which launches a popup would be pretty non disruptive
willsmith72··on Cloudflare Acquires Outerbase
Yeah agreed. On top of the general high latency, I've had two occasions where all requests timed out for over an hour and never received a response on their community forums or their discord.

On top of that the docs say it's designed for per-user/tenant use cases, while they elsewhere say those use cases aren't ready yet.

willsmith72··on Show HN: Browser MCP – Automate your browser using Cursor, Claude, VS Code
Well you have to have false positives or negatives. Maybe they prefer positives
willsmith72··on What if we made advertising illegal?
But why? The whole premise seems wrong.

> The financial incentives to create addictive digital content would instantly disappear

No they wouldn't.. the business model would change. Facebook sells ads to businesses and entertainment to consumers. People still want to be entertained.

What about the positive effects from advertising? Many products which I never knew existed have gone on to improve my life.

To kill addictive digital content (especially those targeted at young people), just go after them directly. I agree the world will be a better place once we don't spend 10-16 years old online. But the advertising argument doesn't make any sense to me.

willsmith72··on Ask HN: Are Squarespace and Wix sites worth it?
A no-code website builder, 100%. You don't want to maintain that thing. A good builder (I like framer) let's non technical people take ownership over it while still providing flexibility in UI and high speed (for SEO & bounce rate). After seeing landing pages that non tech friends have built, there's no way I'd do it from scratch. Too buggy and time consuming.
willsmith72··on Gemini 2.5 Pro vs. Claude 3.7 Sonnet: Coding Comparison
What I love with Claude is mcp with file system. Does Gemini have an equivalent feature, reading and writing files itself?
willsmith72··on The Five-Week Solo Startup
well at least that explains the terrible website. although it's kind of fun
willsmith72··on The Five-Week Solo Startup
I don't think you need that much credibility if it's just old ideas restated in new structure.

The article is basically just "customer obsession" + "do things that don't scale". I find the 5-week framing interesting, but the concepts aren't new.

willsmith72··on Practical UX for startups surviving without a designer
Definitely a huge trap to replace real user insights with anything else.

But this looks like a nice level 0 of testing

willsmith72··on Tesla Sales Fall Off a Cliff Globally, Including Germany, Australia, and China
i mean what do they get from buying a second hand car? i'll have solar soon, will very rarely need the charging network
willsmith72··on Tesla Sales Fall Off a Cliff Globally, Including Germany, Australia, and China
you're comparing the actions of a government vs those of the ceo. of course any company in china is more linked to the gov than most in the US, but BYD's ceo is far more likeable and less offensive to the majority
willsmith72··on Tesla Sales Fall Off a Cliff Globally, Including Germany, Australia, and China
other than sell? it's still not clear if they even have director independence.
willsmith72··on Tesla Sales Fall Off a Cliff Globally, Including Germany, Australia, and China
it is, and for moral reasons i wouldn't buy one new.

but i've had the same thought as parent. if the 2nd hand market really dips, i'm not going to let dirty looks from strangers get in the way of a smart economic & ecological move for me

willsmith72··on Layoffs Don't Work
2 way street. you say "it's laying off a bunch of people who were gonna dip in 6 months to a year anyway."

to the new grad, it's "wow half my team just got laid off when the company seems to be doing fine, i guess i better not get too comfortable here"

willsmith72··on Claude 3.7 Sonnet and Claude Code
As a growth company, they likely would prefer a larger amount of users even with occasional rate limits, vs smaller pool of power users.

As long as capacity is an issue, you can't have both

willsmith72··on Why Ruby on Rails still matters
shopify is hugely invested in react and even full stack react through react router. still rails is great for the backend of course
willsmith72··on Barcelona buys apartment building at center of eviction protests
because if you took the US without immigrants with its 1.6 birth rate, the economy would collapse
willsmith72··on Barcelona buys apartment building at center of eviction protests
> in some European countries population growth is only due to immigration

You mean like the USA? Or just about every developed nation on the planet?
